5 What is British Sign Language? Educational and vocational training British Sign Language or BSL is a common language in the UK. It is recognised by the government but has no legal standing. BSL is a method of communicating using hands and facial gestures. It is used when oral forms of communication cannot be used. It is not a language just for the D/deaf it is used by hearing people as well. As with spoken languages there are regional and even local variations. Often BSL can be seen being used on TV to convey what is being said. Signature qualifications start at level 1,then 2, then 3 and finally level 6. What about One to One Support Services Health and Social Care? 5 The health and care sector is in growth. As our population ages so does the reliance on care. This means there is a demand for people that are trained and qualified to work in care. The range of jobs available is wide, but as in most fields qualifications are vital to progress through a career ie. From being a carer to being a care manager. This can be in residential settings, care home, or in the person s own home, Educational and vocational tra ining domiciliary care. Or the job could be providing support out in the community, it can even be a mix of all. The job opportunities are huge so what are you waiting for? We offer training courses ranging from an introduction to health and social care which meets the eight common induction standards right through to apprenticeships, certificates, diplomas and management qualifications. We offer the full range of City and Guilds qualifications in health and social care! Quality only truly happens when you care enough to do your best

6 What is Sensory Impairment? A person may have a single sensory impairment this means a degree of sight or hearing loss. Dual sensory impairment or a person who is deafblind, describes a person with a degree of combined sight and hearing loss. Few people will be totally D/deaf and blind while others will have some residual sight and hearing. This may be from birth or develop over time later in life. Deafblindness is a disability that requires specialist services and support for coping with everyday life and tasks. It is unique to the individual and creates challenges for communication, access to information, self care skills, mobility and safety in the home and community. One to One Support Services 6 Why courses on Sensory Impairment? As our population is increasing so is the demand for quality services. These may be for our elderly gentlefolk, whose residual sight and hearing decrease with age. Who will experience communication problems, mobility difficulties and often feel isolated from their communities which often results in depression. When speech is no longer an effective method of communication frustration and misunderstanding can occur. People with a learning difficulty often have a degree of sensory impairments also. They may have a unique communication system. Education and care can present a range of challenges and can become increasingly difficult with each additional disability the person has. Some people have congenital sensory impairments (born with) this could be blind, Deaf or both. This group of people will have developed their own unique systems of communication but may still need specialist support with daily life activities and in order to interact with their environment and others around them. A person may be born with one loss and then acquire another later in life. Quality only truly happens when you care enough to do your best

7 What are the New Health And Social Care Qualifications? The new qualifications in a nutshell, cover the skills and knowledge needed to care for others in a wide range of health and social care settings. They replace the NVQ system. The core qualification is a Diploma and this can have units added on to it to provide a more tailored pathway that suits your role - for example working with people with learning disabilities, people with dementia or children and young people. The resulting qualification is proof that you have the right skills to do your job. To employers, as you know, these are the main qualifications required by the Quality Care Commission to ensure you have the correct ratio of qualified to unqualified people in your setting. What is your ratio? Could your setting benefit from the free training we have on offer? What R R about Apprenticeships? Am I to Old? Apprenticeships are a way of gaining qualifications while working. The scheme is being backed by the government therefore there is funding available to either fully pay for gaining the qualification or at least subsidise it. An apprenticeship does not have to be a young person, the scheme is open to everyone. For more details please contact us. We share ways of assessing what's being presented through to writing behaviour support programmes and teaching replacement skills. We explore a range of tactics, methods and approaches to support the person, thus reducing the behaviours with short and long term strategies. Our course is designed to pass our knowledge to you and your staff with an aim of managing the situations safely and reducing stress and anxiety for all involved. What is Challenging R R Behaviour? Challenging behaviour is complex but in a nut shell it is behaviour of such intensity, frequency or duration that the physical safety of the person or others is placed in serious jeopardy, or behaviour which is likely to seriously limit or deny access to the use of ordinary community facilities. (Prof. Emerson) If not managed correctly it can seriously affect a person s health and well being. And not just those hurt by the aggression! What is the Age Range You Cover? 9 Where possible we set the content of the course to the age range that the participants would be supporting. From nurseries to adults to care homes we would make sure we cover what you need to know by talking to you to see what your staff require before the course is delivered. Do your staff comment that by attending training separately it means that their approach is different? That is why we at One To One Support Services can deliver the course at your location. All your staff receive the same knowledge and a consistent team approach to managing challenging behaviour is developed. Staff have the same shared understanding to support each other and those they are working with. Quality only truly happens when you care enough to do your best
