3 Why Volunteer? 18 BCM (Belfast Central Mission) has a dedicated team of volunteers who are pivotal in much of their work. They help with many aspects of BCM s work from participating in fundraising activities to befriending an older person in the community, or helping out at a tea dance. BCM Community Services Manager Janet Sewell has high praise for those who volunteer and offers good advice for anyone considering it. We couldn t do our work without our volunteers, they find the role very fulfilling, it can give added self-esteem and can even be therapeutic, its a great thing to be able to do. Many have said to me that they find voluntary work to be as natural as breathing. Volunteering can benefit everyone involved not only the person volunteering, but also the people you help by doing so. By giving up your time to help others you not only get a feeling of self-worth, but can learn valuable life lessons and make new friends. By committing yourself to volunteering whatever amount of time you wish, you can make a positive impact on the lives of others in the community and enhance yours. If you are a student or perhaps currently unemployed volunteering can be a very valuable asset for your CV. Even an hour of your time a week could make the difference to those who you commit your time to. Volunteering really can assist you to fulfill your potential, develop new skills, show initiative and widen your horizons. Volunteers come from all walks of life and can be all ages. If you have even a small amount of free time in your life, perhaps you could join the many people who already volunteer and become a vital part of many charity s and organization s good work. To learn more about BCM and volunteering opportunities you can visit or telephone Janet Sewell on All courses are flexible and can be designed to meet your organisation's needs 3 BCM Training Services An estimated 3 million people are employed in the health & social care sector across the UK. In Northern Ireland there are approximately 40,000 with one third working across statutory and criminal justice sectors and 27,000 in the voluntary and private sector. Government requirements for employers expect modernisation and increased standards of care, across all sectors, for service users. Employers are thus required to recruit, retain and develop the skills of their workforce and employees.
