5 They said National specialist care home provider Potens knows only too well the benefits that follow when employees improve their skills and qualifications on training courses. More than 70 members of its staff attended 300 short courses at Redcar & Cleveland College during a 12-month period, enabling them to refresh their skills, familiarise themselves with changes to legislation and keep their qualifications current. Potens provides residential support and supported living services to Suzanne Scanlon Avondale Team Leader The courses at Redcar & Cleveland College were the best we have ever done. It s a great learning environment, with excellent facilities and everything we learned was relevant to our jobs. We all came away feeling we had really benefited. We hope to do more. adults with learning disabilities, mental health difficulties, autism and physical disabilities. It operates two homes in Redcar and has several others across the country. The specific demands of caring for people with these issues means that support workers must regularly undergo training courses to update their skills. The College worked in partnership with Potens to develop a training plan that best suited the needs of the business and employees. Through consultation, methods were identified to enable a number of short courses to be combined into one bespoke course, which minimised disruption to operational down time. The course covered a range of subjects, including Health and Safety, Nutrition, Care Planning, Epilepsy Awareness, Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults and Challenging Behaviour. Karen Birchall, Registered Manager of Potens Avondale care home in Redcar, said: All of the Potens staff working in the Redcar area did a variety of courses at Redcar & Cleveland College and the feedback they gave was excellent. The college has great facilities and the teaching standards were extremely good, so, without doubt, all of the courses were very relevant to the work we do with residents

Certificate Specialist Support for 3 45 weeks Further develops candidates role as a Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Advisor or Learning Teaching & Learning in Mentor in a school environment. Schools Diploma Children & Young People s 2 33 weeks Aimed at those working or volunteering as a Childminder, Youth Worker or Childcare Practitioner. Workforce Certificate Children & Young People s 3 45 weeks Further develops candidates childcare leadership skills. Aimed at those who wish to develop their Workforce Diploma career as a Childcare Practitioner, Nursery Manager, Youth Worker or Community Development Worker. Introduction to Study Skills 4 2x ½ day Further develops candidates academic writing ability. Early Years Sector Endorsed 4 & 5 2 years Responds to the children s workforce strategy to develop the best qualified people to be working with Foundation Degree (FdA) TU our youngest children. Introduction to Infection CC 1 day An introduction to what an infection is and how to prevent the spread of infection. Control & Procedures Mental Health Awareness CC ½ day Develops candidates knowledge regarding mental health illnesses. Enables candidates to recognise the different symptoms, various causes and possible treatments of various illnesses. Dyslexia Awareness CC 3 hours Increases candidates awareness of dyslexia. Enables candidates to recognise the range of difficulties experienced by learners and identify practical strategies for supporting learners with dyslexia. Dementia Awareness CC 1 day Examines dementia, its causes, results and the best way to support people with it. ASD Autism Awareness CC 3 hours Increases candidates awareness of Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). Considers the range of difficulties associated with high functioning autism, the implications for families and educational establishments and strategies to support individuals with ASDs. Introduction to Dementia 2 3 hours An awareness course covering definitions and types of dementia and issues relating to individuals with dementia. Introduction to Mental 2 3 hours An awareness course for those new to working with individuals with a mental health illness. Health Issues Covers types of illness, stereotyping and examines the support available. Understanding Physical 2 3 hours An awareness course for those new to working with individuals with physical disabilities. Disability Covers types of disabilities, stereotyping and examines the support available. Introduction to Pressure 2 3 hours An awareness course as an introduction to pressure area care. Concentrates on causes, tissue viability, Area Care who is more at risk and risk assessment and explores preventative methods and equipment available. Principles and Introduction 2 3 hours An awareness course for those new to working with individuals with learning disabilities. to Working with Learning Covers definitions, non-judgemental attitudes and stereotyping issues as well as information Disabilities regarding independence. Safeguarding Vulnerable 2 3 hours An awareness course identifying who in society are vulnerable and what makes individuals vulnerable Individuals to abuse. Explores different types of abuse and indicators and how and where to report abuse. Equality and Diversity in 2 3 hours An awareness course regarding equality and diversity in the care setting, examining how equality and the Care Environment diversity can be provided and examining issues for the Equality Act CC: College Certificate

Activities in a Care Setting Roles and Responsibilities 2 3 hours An awareness course examining the roles and responsibilities and accountability of individuals working of Care Staff within the care sector. Record Keeping, Information 2 3 hours An awareness course regarding information handling in the care setting with emphasis given to Handling and Confidentiality confidentiality and data security and effective record keeping. in the Care Setting Person Centred 2 3 hours An awareness course outlining person centred approaches and ways these can be adopted and Approaches & Working facilitated within the care sector. Includes multi-disciplinary working with the aim of ensuring the care in Partnership with Others receiver is the driving force in their own care package. Principles of Safeguarding 2 ½ day Introduces the importance of safeguarding individuals from abuse. Identifies different types of abuse & Protection in Health & and the signs and symptoms that might indicate abuse is occurring. Social Care Support the use of 3 ½ day Covers broad types, classifications and forms of medication, as well as safe handling and storage. Medication in Social Care QCF Unit. Three hours plus students to be observed in a real working environment. Settings Health & Social Care 2 33 weeks Covers the skills and knowledge needed to care for others in a wide range of health or social care (Adults) Diploma settings. Candidates can choose a pathway that suits a specific role e.g. working with people with a learning disability or dementia.
