In 2015, the number of students from all over the world enrolled in German higher education institutions reached a new peak at 321,569, an increase of about 20,000 (7%) in comparison with the previous year. The number of international first-year students also reached an all-time high with 109,223 - which means that an impressive 21% of all first-year students in Germany are international. The number of young Malaysians studying in Germany rose to 1.011, more than ever before. The majority of Malaysians in Germany study engineering subjects (76%), but interest in other fields of studies is growing. Students in Germany benefit from cutting-edge standards in teaching and research. Due to a traditionally close cooperation between higher education institutions and the industry, German universities are able to provide key impulses for innovation and economic progress. Interested? The Institute for Environmental Sciences of University of Koblenz-Landau offers two international Master s programs taught in English the M.Sc. in Environmental Sciences and the M.Sc. in Ecotoxicology. New colleague at DAAD Information Centre KL Ms Teo Jin Jing has recently joined our team in DAAD Information Centre Kuala Lumpur. Teo Jin Jing graduated from University of Malaya (UM) with a Bachelor s degree in German Language and Linguistics. Sometimes I even think that German grammar is easier than English Grammar! Learn German Where can I learn German? This is one of the questions frequently asked by our visitors. Here in Kuala Lumpur, German language classes are offered in the Goethe-Institut. Jin Jing, why did you choose to study German Language and Linguistics? German is the language of my favourite writers, philosophers and composers such as Kafka, Goethe, Bach and Mozart. Besides, German is the most widely spoken language in Europe and the German economy ranks high worldwide. In my opinion, knowing German looks great on my resume. Is it easy to get a job with a BA in German? To be honest, I don t think it is hard to get a job with a BA in Language. My friends all got jobs after graduation, some in the private sector, some with the government. There are about 400 German companies in Malaysia, so I have no worries on finding a job. Did you find it hard to learn German? Why did you join DAAD? Outside KL, in Penang, the Malaysian-German Society also offers German language courses. Check their offers at It was quite hard at first because I did not know much about German at all. However, the lecturers at our faculty are really helpful. Moreover, German is quite similar to English, they share some grammatical rules. I already knew a bit about DAAD because I worked as a part-timer for them as a student. German education enjoys a high reputation around the world and it's free. I'm eager to help promoting German higher education.

The two universities run a double degree Master programme in 'Water Resources Engineering and Management' (WAREM) which is open for students from both Malaysia and Germany. Students taking part in the programme study two semesters at each university. The Vice Chancellor of UiTM, Y.B. Tan Sri Dato' Sri Prof. Dr. Sahol Hamid bin Abu Bakar, is a guest professor at WAREM and teaches in Stuttgart on a regular basis. 4 Page 4 DAAD KL events in pictures Info session on scholarships for PhD-candidates at UM, September 2015 Visit to UNIMAS in Kuching, Sarawak, October 2015 New German-Malaysian Master Programme in General Management This new dual degree programme offers you the opportunity to obtain an accredited European Master s degree (M.A. in General Management) from Hochschule für Technik (HFT) Stuttgart (Germany) in combination with a Master s degree (M.B.A) from Arshad Ayub Graduate Business School (AAGBS) at Universiti Teknologi MARA (Malaysia). The programme aims to prepare students for leadership roles with a strong international focus. This joint study programme of both universities will start with a foundation Prof. Dr. Rainer Franke, Rector of Hochschule für Technik Stuttgart, and Tan Sri Dato' Sri Prof. Dr. Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar, Vice Chancellor of UiTM phase at the home university (for German students at HFT Stuttgart, for Malaysian students at AAGBS) followed by a nine month study abroad phase at the partner university. Was war Ihre Motivation? Seit meiner Schulzeit wollte ich immer meine Ausbildung in Deutschland machen, da Deutschland für mich Gleichheit, Fürsorge und Technik bedeutet. Aus diesem Grund habe ich an der UM Deutsch und Linguistik studiert. Während meines Studiums haben die UM und die HTWG Konstanz ein Doppelabschlussprogramm etabliert. Unerwartet habe ich dadurch die Chance bekommen, in Deutschland zu studieren. So bin ich in Konstanz gelandet. Was war anfangs neu und unerwartet für Sie? Obwohl ich die deutsche Sprache und Kultur an der UM kennen gelernt hatte, hatte ich in Konstanz Schwierigkeiten, Deutsch zu reden - denn hier spricht man nicht, sondern schwätzt. Ich habe die bunten Konstanzer Dialekte kennen gelernt. Darüber hinaus ist Deutschland auch multiethnisch und multikulturell, wie Malaysia, und diese Vielfalt erinnert mich immer an meine Heimat. Wie unterscheidet sich das Studium in Deutschland und in Malaysia? Hemdglonker Umzug während der Konstanzer Fastnacht Nach meiner Beobachtung ist das Lernen in Malaysia tendenziell kollektiv orientiert und in Deutschland eher individuell. Deutsche Studenten äußern gerne Kritik. Es gibt aber keine Probleme bei der Zusammenarbeit von deutschen und ausländischen Studenten. Wir haben viele interkulturelle Projekte gemeinsam durchgeführt. UM-student wins DAAD-award The Faculty of Languages and Linguistics of University Malaya runs a Double Degree Bachelor Programme with the University of Applied Sciences Konstanz, Germany. The participants study German (2-3 years) at UM and Business German and Tourism Management (2 years) in Konstanz. They receive BA-degrees from both universities. TC Lum is one of the first graduates of the programme. He won the DAAD-award for international students for his outstanding performance and his social engagement. 10 Advertisement Page 10 The study programme Master Environmental Engineering is intended to further qualify experts in environmental protection based on sound environmental assessment and innovative technologies. The study course attaches great importance to scientific methods, application orientation and problem-solving strategies in interaction with social requirements and at the intersection of different stakeholder interests. Course-integrated projects across the entire course duration aim at the training of skills to develop solution strategies, use of need-oriented, technical approaches and the development of a high level of social competence. Teams work on scientific and industrial projects of regional and international nature. MaEE has been designed as non-consecutive international full-time study-course of 3 semesters with 90 CP (ECTS) in English language; the tuition fee is 12,000 EUR in total for 3 semesters. Applicants must have a degree of Bachelor of Engineering (or a corresponding, similar field) of at least 210 Credit Points (CP) and one year of professional experience in an environmental field. Possible employers include public authorities, NGOs, scientific institutions, consulting firms and planning companies, corporations and environmental and water management services and organisations.
