2 What Is IMU s Environmental Health Programme About? Overview Malaysia has experienced tremendous socio-economic development over the last 30 years although the magnitude and pace vary from state to state. Most states have experienced rapid urbanisation and industrialisation and overall improvement. Death and disease from emergencies, disasters and disease outbreaks associated with environmental risk factors can be significantly reduced by effective prevention, preparedness and response capacities. Health Impact Assessment provides decision makers with information about how any policy, programme or project may affect the health of people. IMU s Environmental Health programme aims to produce staff scientists and specialists with a strong foundation in the broad field of environmental health at the master s level and subsequently doctoral level academic training. This programme has been designed to have a flexible modular approach which enables students to accumulate credits from completed modules. Modules have been designed to fit applicants with a basic degree in areas such as biomedical science, nursing, pharmaceutical science and environmental & cccupational sciences. Its innovative curriculum highlights the importance of various pollutants (outdoor and indoor air quality / water quality) on human health. It will also introduce the latest methods for assessing health impacts and appropriate intervention strategies to regulate and improve environmental health, all of which would enable innovations in the management of environmental pollution. degree / duration MSc in Environmental Health 1½ 4 years commencement March and September

3 A Word from the Programme Director The programme aims to produce environmental health scientists and specialists with strong foundation in the field of Environmental Health at the master and doctoral level. Students will be adequately trained with problem-solving skills, critical and reflective thinking through research projects and coursework. Graduates may have work opportunities in government agencies, non-profit organisations, environmental consultancy firms, industry and academia. 4 How Does the Programme Work? Environmental Health Programme Structure The teaching format will generally include lectures (face-to-face and e-learning), supplemented by field visits, on-site discussions, case studies and self-directed learning. The core modules will be taught in Semesters 1 and 2 and the elective modules in Semesters 2 and 3. The research module will extend across Semesters 1, 2 and 3. There is a selective option for students to study the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Programme on Occupation Health and other relevant elective modules on environmental health. full-time Assessment The components of assessment consist of continuous assessments, written final examination and the research thesis. Entry Requirements Bachelor s degree or equivalent with minimum cgpa of 2.75, as accepted by the HEP Senate; or Bachelor s degree or equivalent with minimum cgpa of 2.50 and not meeting cgpa of 2.75, can be accepted subject to rigorous internal assessment; Bachelor s degree or equivalent not meeting cgpa of 2.50, can be accepted subject to a minimum of 5 years working experience in relevant field. Environmental health scientists and specialists gather data and monitor environmental conditions to investigate possible health hazards caused by the severe haze. Left: High intensity rainfall during the monsoon season causes major floods across several regions, which lead to an increase in leptospirosis and meloidosis cases. Environmental health scientists and specialists consult local authorities on flood risk management decision-making by performing environmental impact studies. Bottom: The contaminants in collected soil and water samples are analysed by environmental health scientists and specialists in a laboratory setting to monitor and propose methods to limit contamination at the affected site.

6 Why Study Environmental Health at IMU? Formulating research proposals, conducting both laboratory and field studies, collecting, mining and interpretation of data, and generation of reports and recommendations will be core competencies expected of our graduates. 4 5 Career Opportunities in a Challenging Environment A wide spectrum of career opportunities exists for graduates in this expanding field including positions such as safety, health and environmental advisors; auditors in private companies; consultancies; in local government and public authorities; in environmental or public advisory organisations and agencies as well as in the academia. 7 How Much Does It Cost? Environmental Health Programme Fees All fees quoted are in Ringgit Malaysia unless stated otherwise.
