3 What is Dual Enrollment? Dual enrollment is an arrangement with a college or university that allows eligible high school students to take college courses for credit Benefits of dual enrollment include: Allows all students to earn college credit Lowers the overall cost for college Dual enrollment students have higher high school graduation rates1 Dual enrollment students have higher grades in college and earn more college credits1 Helps high school students get comfortable with doing college level coursework 1- Karp, M. 4 Program Overview Maryland State Department of Education s College Readiness and Completion Act of 2013 School districts are required to pay a portion of tuition for qualifying 11 th and 12 th graders who are also enrolled in college courses at any Maryland public state college or university

5 Dual Enrollment PGCPS pays: Tuition for ALL students dually enrolled in qualified courses at any Maryland state college or university for fall, spring, and/or summer sessions Fees and textbooks for students who receive free and reduced meals. Pre approved list of courses students receive dual high school and college credit. Grades are weighted No developmental courses Students must provide own transportation to and from the college campus

8 Who is eligible for dual enrollment? Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA Enrolled in 11 th or 12 th grade Meet college requirements on college tests: SAT, ACT, Accuplacer admissions Minimum requirements may vary at each college There is no age requirement

9 Course Selection Students are permitted to take any college course they qualify for There is a limited, pre-approved, list of courses where students receive credit for college course and high school course PGCPS students are not able to take developmental courses Students must receive principal, counselor, and parent approval of course selection

10 What is the registration process? Complete 1-page dual enrollment application and indicate school of interest Complete application packet for college of interest Required documents vary per school, but generally include Attend required new student orientation at college, if applicable

11 PGCC application process Complete application packet includes: PGCPS dual enrollment form with required signatures and course section numbers PGCC online admissions application confirmation College placement exam score report with minimal required score (Accuplacer, SAT, ACT) Copy of high school transcript from SchoolMax SOAR online orientation certificate of completion Returning students only need to complete 1 page dual enrollment from with required signatures and course selections Incomplete packets will not be processed and notification will be ed Packets must be submitted to counselor no later than November 18

12 Accuplacer Accuplacer is a college admissions exam PGCPS is paying for students to take the exam at their high school Attend required new student orientation at college, if applicable Testing window ended October 1 11 th and 12 th grade students with at least a 2.5 GPA have option of taking exam If student is satisfied with previous test score, they are not required to retake again

13 Key dates October 31: Deadline for new students to complete online application November 2: PGCC course catalog and schedule published November 19: Application deadline for PGCC for Spring 2015 enrollment. Tamika and team will pick up packets from each school December 17: Students notified by PGCC of course enrollment January: New student orientation at PGCC January 20: Spring session begins for PGCC ***Deadlines for other colleges vary.
