Short-term Filmmaking Hands-on Intensive Short-term Filmmaking CURRICULUM The curriculum outlined on the following pages is the basis for learning in our short term, and evening filmmaking workshops. It also serves as the foundation of the first two months of our one-year and two-year programs. The curriculum is designed for people with little or no experience in making films. Its goal is to arm students with the skills and confidence needed to produce a well-told story with moving images. To fulfill this goal, classes and projects concentrate on the essential elements of visual storytelling which enable the participant to direct a series of films. In each of our locations, this fundamental curriculum is utilized. All locations offer the four and six-week workshops. The eight-week, evening, and one-year programs are offered at the New York Film Academy s central location in Manhattan and our West Coast headquarters in Los Angeles. While the curriculum is the same, each locale brings with it a distinct ambience for the study of film. New York City offers students the world s favorite urban backlot; Universal immerses them in the glamour of Hollywood; Harvard University gives students a taste of Ivy League excellence. Our overseas locations are equally compelling. In Paris, France, the birthplace of cinema, our students are steeped in a culture in love with film and filmmakers. In Florence and Rome, Italy, Michelangelo inspires students to create objects of great beauty. Abu Dhabi, UAE is a chance for students to become part of a renaissance of art and culture in the Middle East, in the glittering cosmopolitan port of Dubai, a short trip from the capital. 98 Everyone finds it so easy to be a director- how come I find it so difficult? - Louis Malle
Short-term Filmmaking Total Immersion classes The following classes are designed to be of immediate and practical use in an integrated curriculum. Each week students are able to immediately apply the lessons learned in their classes to the films they are producing. Director s Craft Writing Editing Hands-on Camera/Lighting Production Workshop Crews While every student in the program writes and directs his or her own films, it is important that students realize that filmmaking is a collaborative art. Students form three or four person crews and gain invaluable experience rotating in the principal production positions: Writer/ Director/ Editor/Producer Director of Photography Assistant Camera Gaffer/Grip By getting behind the camera as a cinematographer, students train their eyes for composition and learn to respect the difficulties of setting up a shot. Similarly, by working as a gaffer and taking responsibility for the lights, they practice how light and shadow affect the film. By working in the various crew positions students gain empathy and respect for their crews, this is essential for successful work as a director. These crews function as working groups for each film exercise and the final film. Thus, each student not only directs a series of projects, but also works in crew positions on his or her colleagues films. Crews are required to meet each week with the directing instructor to review their scripts and shooting plans. Assignments The Film Academy faculty designed a series of film exercises as building blocks for the final film project. They are intended to instill in each student a degree of confidence in visual storytelling and to provide a foundation in basic film craft. Those new to filmmaking begin to understand how the disciplines of writing, cinematography, sound, and editing work together, while those with experience can practice and refine specific craft skills. All students should seize this opportunity to experiment freely in order to develop their ability to engage and entertain an audience. Depending on the workshop, films will be shot on 16mm film stock and/or HD video. All films are edited digitally. Please see the following page for a complete list of the short-term filmmaking workshops. The most hands-on intensive programs in the world. 99

Short-term Documentary Hands-on Intensive Short-term Documentary Overview The 6-week documentary workshop is an intensive program that combines in-class instruction and hands-on production workshops where students put into practice what they learn in the classroom. During the first two weeks, students learn the fundamental tools of documentary filmmaking. Classes include Producing, Directing, Camera, Lighting, Sound Recording, and Editing. Students apply what they learn by creating two-minute individual observational films, and by producing two short group projects in production workshops under the guidance of their instructors. Following production and post-production of each project, students screen their work with their classmates and instructors and engage in critiques and discussion. Throughout the session, each student devotes time to developing and pre-producing his/her final documentary in and outside the classroom a film of up to eight minutes in length with at least two tracks of sound. Students crew on their classmates documentary films. Projects are edited using digital editing software. Significant Production and Post-production hours outside of class time are necessary to successfully complete the workshop. The Academy recognizes, as should the students, that these hours will vary from student to student, depending on the scope of each project. 6-Week Documentary Workshop Tuition: $3,950 The most hands-on intensive programs in the world. 101
Hands-on Intensive Short-term Music Video OVERVIEW From day one, students are fully immersed in various facets of making a music video. Students work with digital cameras beginning on their first day in school and, by the end of the course, edit their own version of a short music video subject which was conceived, produced, and shot by the class as a group. Students are taught the most essential elements of what goes into making a music video, including: choosing the right band and the right song, creating the look of the video and its overall aesthetic style, planning the music video in storyboards, learning how to shoot and keep the film in sync with the lyrics and editing, and adding visual special effects. By its very nature, the music video is stylistic, expressive, evocative, and free of many of the constraints of standard narrative filmmaking. Making music videos can be a great proving ground for aspiring film and television directors helping theme develop a personal style. Accomplished filmmakers, like David Fincher (Se7en), Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich), Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), Michael Bay (Transformers), McG (Charlie s Angles), and Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) began their careers by making music videos. And established directors like Martin Scorsese, Michael Apted, and John Landis have chosen to direct music videos as a way to explore the possibilities of the medium. In the 4-week workshop, the New York Film Academy has joined forces with Rolling Stone, one of the most respected magazines covering the music and entertainment industries to train the next generation of music video creators. 1-Week Music Video Workshop 4-Week music video Workshop with rolling stone (4 week) Tuition: $1,450 (1-Week) $3,300 (4-Week with Rolling Stone) 102 Go online at nyfa.edu for more information.
Short-term Digital Editing Hands-on Intensive Short-term Digital Editing Students who study the amazing art of film editing at the New York Film Academy learn how to apply both technical skills and good storytelling to bring stories to life. What makes our Editing unique? Digital Editing Software exploded onto the digital video editing scene only a few short years ago, and has strongly established a foothold for itself among the world s premiere editing houses and film schools. The easy-to-use features make digital editing software a wonderful tool for editing digital video and film, and can be used by individuals to build their own home professional video editing systems for picture and image editing or sound editing. The New York Film Academy Four-Week Digital Editing Workshop and Twelve-Week Evening Digital Editing Workshop are intensive courses designed to familiarize students with all the skills necessary to work with digital editing software. In keeping with the New York Film Academy philosophy, students enrolled in the Digital Editing will find themselves in front of a workstation from day one. Equipment & Facilities Students enrolled in the Four-Week Editing Workshop or the Twelve-Week Evening Digital Editing Workshop at any of our film school locations will have individual hands-on use of digital editing system, installed on an Apple computer. 4-Week Digital Editing Workshop 12-Week Evening Digital Editing Workshop Tuition: $3,650 Side by side with highly experienced, Apple-certified editing instructors, students edit professionally shot scenes, gaining invaluable experience through in-depth exploration of story structure, style and content approaches. By the end of the course, the student will have completed three projects, which can be used for a movie editing show reel. 103
Short-term Acting for Film Hands-on Intensive Short-term Acting for Film No matter how beautiful the cinematography or impressive the special effects in a film, audiences are drawn in by the struggles of the characters on screen. On set, dozens of crew members whirl about, twelve kilowatt lights bore into the eyes, focus tape is pulled to the actor s cheek, and the actor is still expected to give a believable and moving performance. In acknowledgment of the importance of the film actor s job, and in support of the skills required to do the job brilliantly, the Film Academy is proud to offer its Acting for Film. The four-week summer program is offered in the U.S. and Europe. An eightweek workshop and one-year program in Acting for Film is available in New York, Los Angeles, and Abu Dhabi. 104 U.S. Locations: New York City Los Angeles South Beach, Florida Harvard University, Massachusetts* Disney Studios, Florida* *Summer Only
Short-term Acting For Film Format Unlike other acting workshops, our program is integrated with our film school. This has many advantages for the acting student interested in work in front of the camera. Classes emphasize the basic elements of the craft of acting using Stanislavski s System, scene study, and monologue work as starting points. In conjunction with these classes, students participate in courses aimed specifically at training the actor for the technical requirements of acting on a film set. The Acting for Film have a full-time schedule. Students should be prepared to devote daytime hours to workshops and exercises, and additional hours in the evenings and on weekends for rehearsal. Every student shares the same curriculum. Much time is spent focusing on scene study, voice, and movement. Classes encourage students to break down physical and internal inhibitions, and help each student find the most effective personal sources for the creation of truthful characters.
