1 APPENDIX B Exercises & Projects as stipulated in the Film Wing Syllabus, with resources required for each FIRST YEAR EXERCISE NAME DESCRIPTION DURATION RESOURCES REQUIRED Theory Classes These are common classes for all students of the first year, consisting of lectures in all aspects of filmmaking: Direction, Camera, Sound, Editing, Screenplay, Art Direction, Acting, Music, Production Management etc 15 weeks, 3 hours per day Practicals All first year students participate in practical 20 weeks, 4 exercises in all aspects of filmmaking, including hours per day computer operations Continuity Film Each student scripts, directs and edits 2 minute fiction film using 16mm black and white stock, shooting outdoors on campus for one day in available daylight. Students work in groups, rotating crew positions for each film so that each one becomes cinematographer, sound recordist, assistant etc in turn. The film is edited in 2 days on the Steenbeck and screened on the same machine, with separate soundtrack 6 weeks for the entire batch to complete this exercise Classrooms and related teaching aids Digital video cameras with tapes and viewing monitors 16mm cameras with raw stock and related facilities Still cameras with negative film and related facilities Darkroom processing facilities Sound recording machines (Nagra and digital) Microphones 16mm editing facilities Digital video editing facilities Computers for learning multimedia and other applications, hardware and software 16mm camera Nagra sound recorder Boom microphone Black and white 16mm raw stock (200 feet) Reflectors and other equipment to enable shooting with available daylight 16mm positive stock for striking a work print B&W laboratory facilities for processing and printing 16mm sepmag tape for sound editing Nagra to 16mm sound transfer facilities Steenbecks and pic-sync machines for editing plus screening TV Studio Multi Camera Students work in groups to produce a simple 3-4 minute long TV program on the studio 10 weeks for the entire batch TV Studio floor with equipment

2 Exercise floor, working with a multi-camera setup and online editing system DV Film This is the year ending project. Each student scripts, directs and edits a short film using a Digital Video camera and lights as required. Students work in groups, rotating crew positions for each film so that each one becomes cinematographer, sound recordist, assistant etc in turn. The film is edited on the Avid or Final Cut Pro, and transferred to DV tape for screening SECOND YEAR to complete this work 10 weeks for the entire batch to complete this work Digital Video camera Lights, reflectors, gels etc Microphones Mini DV tapes for recording DV deck or camera for transfer from tape to editing computer and back Avid or Final Cut Pro editing system DVDs and mini DV tapes for output of the final film EXERCISE NAME DESCRIPTION DURATION RESOURCES REQUIRED Theory Classes (Film Direction Dept) For specialisation students of Film Direction, lectures and classes are held in the following subjects: Direction; Screenplay Writing; Screen Studies; Music; Acting; Art Direction; Production Management Demonstrations are given for: Editing; Silicon Graphics; Makeup Workshops For specialisation students of Film Direction, (Film Direction s with guest faculty are held for the Dept) following topics: Video Documentary; Screenplay Writing; Film Theory/Mise en Scene; Actor Handling; Music; Production Management Theory Classes Lectures in the theory of Motion Picture (Cinematograp Photography, for specialisation students of the hy Dept) Cinematography dept Cinematograp hy Practicals For specialisation students of cinematography. Practical training in all aspects ofcamera operation and lighting, mainly indoors on the studio floor. Also includes outdoor shooting, laboratory work and work on computers. 15 weeks, ranging from 3 to 9 hours per week in various subjects 7 weeks, ranging from 3 days to 2 weeks per 26 hours over 10 weeks Classrooms and related teaching aids Classrooms, teaching aids plus cameras and other filmmaking equipment as required for each individual Classrooms plus teaching aids as required, including camera equipment for demonstrations 17 weeks 35mm and 16mm film cameras, raw stock, lenses and other accessories Lights, tracks, trolleys and other accessories Camera attendants and light men Indoor studio floor Laboratory Computers

3 Cinematograp hy Workshops Laboratory Study Tour 2 s with guest faculty for specialisation students of Cinematography: Table top photography; and a general to familiarize students with current trends and practices in the field For specialisation students of cinematography to familiarize them with colour laboratory processes, provide them hands on practice and interaction with working professionals Theory Classes For specialisation students of audiography, 17 weeks, for (Sound Dept) theory classes are held in Sound Recording and six hours per Electronics week Practicals (Sound Dept) Practicals are conducted for specialisation students of audiography, for the following topics: Dubbing; Dialogue replacement; Music recording; Sound mixing; Audio measurements; Electronics and Digital media. The students are also given time for self practice Theory Classes For specialisation students of Film Editing. (Editing Dept) Classes in editing theory as well as lectures explaining the technical aspects of film, video and digital editing Practicals (Editing Dept) Workshops (Editing Dept) Action Sequence For specialisation students of Film Editing. Practicals in: Dialogue Sequence editing; Action sequence editing; playback/music editing; video documentary editing For specialisation students of Film Editing, s with guest faculty in: Non Linear Editing; Video post production; documentary editing; complex film editing This exercise is done by Direction and Editing specialisation students only. Each director scripts and shoots a sequence involving action on 16 mm b&w film using available light. Direction students work in groups and help each to shoot. Sound is recorded by them as well. Editing on the Steenbeck. 3 weeks Cameras, studios and other equipment as required by each individual 1 week Liason with a colour laboratory and post production studios in Bombay or any suitable place Ranging from 2 to 12 weeks per practical, between 6 to 30 hours per week Classrooms and related teaching aids including sound recording machines, mixing consoles and sound studio space Sound recording equipment, both analog and digital Sound mixing equipment, both analogue and digital Sound studio space as necessary for each practical session Over 16 weeks Classrooms and related teaching aids Over 16 weeks 35mm Steenbecks Non linear editing systems (Avid and FCP) 1 week for each 4 weeks for the entire batch Film, video and non linear editing systems as required for each individual 16mm camera 16mm black&white raw stock (400 feet) Reflectors and other aids for daylight shooting 16mm positive stock for printing (400 feet) Lab facilities for processing and printing Steenbeck and pic sync machines for editing and screening

4 Dramatic Sequence This exercise is done by specialisation students Each director scripts and the unit makes a dialogue based dramatic sequence on a common studio set, using 35mm B&W film. Lights are used as required within the studio, and sync sound is recorded. Editing is done on the Steenbeck, and the edited work print itself is the final output. Dialogue Film This exercise is done by specialisation students Each unit is joined by one more member from the Art Direction course. Each director scripts and the unit makes a dialogue based short film, around 10 minutes in duration, on a specially constructed studio set, using 35mm colour film. Lights are used as required within the studio, and sync sound is recorded. The negative is telecined, and editing is done on the Avid or Final Cut Pro. A mixed soundtrack is created using ProTools, and a married print of the final film is struck. Video Documentary This exercise is done by specialisation students Each director scripts and the unit makes a 10 minute documentary on Digital Video, shooting at any location within 200 km of Pune city. Editing on the Avid or FCP and sound post production on the ProTools, but only stock music may be used. This is part of the course completion requirements. Slide Project Students of Cinematography produce a project (Cinematograpshooting slides with reversal film around a hy Dept) particular theme Writing aids as necessary 10 weeks Equipment and teaching tools, including cameras and other facilities as required by the expert conducting the Spread over the entire year Teaching aids and camera equipment as required 4 weeks Camera equipment, lights, accessories and teaching aids as required Liason with labs and professionals working outside, for the study tour 5 weeks 35mm Camera equipment with anamorphic lenses 35mm raw stock Lights and accessories as required Indoor studio space and outdoor location as required Over the entire Writing and research aids year 5 days per 3 rolls of 35mm colour reversal film per student student, over the second part of the year SLR still cameras with accessories and lenses 10 weeks Sound mixing equipment as required Practicals (Sound Dept) Students of Audiography undertake practicals in multi channel stereo techniques. Practicals Editing students undertake practicals in: Over the entire Editing machines (Avid or FCP) for each student

6 (Editing Dept) Non linear editing and special effects Study Tour Editing students are taken on a tour to (Editing Dept) introduce them to various editing facilities and special effect options available in professional setups Workshops (Editing Dept) Playback/Musi c Video Editing students have s with guest faculty in: Non linear editing; Editing of different genres; Special effects; Analysis of Edited Films This exercise is done by specialisation students They may either choose an existing musical piece or record their own. Using this prerecorded soundtrack, they shoot a musical playback sequence on 35mm colour film, at any suitable location within Pune city, using lights and full production facilities as required by their script. Editing is done on the Avid or FCP and a married print is struck of the finished sequence. Ad Film This exercise is done by specialisation students Each director scripts and the unit makes and advertising spot of 30 seconds duration, on video (Beta or DV). Shooting may be done anywhere in the city, using lights and other equipment as the script demands. Editing done on the Avid or FCP. This is an optional exercise, and some students choose not to make an ad film. year 3 days to 1 week Liason with studios and professionals outside 5 weeks Editing systems and teaching aids as required for each individual Any time during 33 weeks of the third year. Approximate duration for each unit, based on stipulated shifts: Around 2 weeks Several units may work concurrently 35mm camera 35mm colour stock (1200 feet) Lights and related equipment Transportation in case of location shooting Studio floor in case of indoor shooting Production support, driver and light men Sound playback facilities: Nagra with spool or digital playback system, with speakers on location Music recording studio facilities and sound transfer facilities Colour lab facilities for processing Telecine facilities Beta/Digibeta tapes for telecine and transfers Avid or FCP system for editing Video camera Lights and related equipment as required Transportation and logistical support in case of outdoor shooting Microphones and other location recording equipment as required DV or Beta tapes Sound track laying and mixing facilities as required Avid or FCP for editing

7 Diploma Film This exercise is done by specialisation students It is the culmination of all that the students have learnt in their three years and is meant to showcase their talent when they leave the Institute. The film may be fiction or non fiction, shot using 35mm colour film, at any location within 200 kms of Pune over 10 consecutive working days. Each director is responsible for the script, and the other members of the unit collaborate in technical aspects and support the shooting. The post production of the film is estimated to finish within 35 days of the receipt of the rushes from the laboratory. Editing over 15 days approximately, and sound post over 20 days approximately. The film's negative is cut and a married print struck. depending on the availability of video equipment Any time during 33 weeks of the third year. Approximate duration based on stipulated shifts: 2 months per unit Usually, 2 units work concurrently 35 mm camera 35mm colour raw stock (6000 feet) and corresponding positive stock for printing Lights and related equipment as required in each case Location sound recording equipment including digital recorder, mixer and microphones Transportation to outdoor locations Production and other support facilities, including personnel like drivers, light men, electricians etc Colour lab for processing and printing Telecine facilities Beta/Digibeta tapes for telecine and transfers Beta/Digibeta recorders and tapes for transfer to editing system and back Sound transfer facilities, including backup disks if using digital recorders Sound negative stock Avid or FCP for editing Negative cutting facilities Dubbing, music recording, track laying and mixing facilities on a digital format
