1 Digital Systems Syllabus 1

2 Course Description: This course covers the design and implementation of digital systems. Topics include: combinational and sequential digital circuits, minimization methods, state machine design and state assignment techniques, hardware description languages such as VHDL and Verilog, circuit implementation using MSI integrated circuits and programmable logic devices. Prerequisites: ETEE

7 Goal: The goal of this course is for students to be able to design, test, troubleshoot, and implement combinational and sequential digital circuits in a professional manner and by using medium scale integration (MSI) ICs and programmable logic devices. 7

8 Prerequisites by Topic A demonstrated understanding of fundamental digital electronics including the logic and electrical operating characteristics of AND, OR, XOR, NAND, and NOR gates. Ability to apply circuit reduction techniques using Boolean algebra and Karnaugh maps. Demonstrated understanding of binary, octal, decimal, and hexadecimal number systems and arithmetic operations. 8

9 Course Topics: Course Introduction and Role of the Digital Design Engineer Static and dynamic electrical characteristics of the CMOS, TTL, DTL, and ECL families of logic ICs Analysis and operation of latches and flip-flops Binary and decade counter operation and design Decoders, Encoders, Comparators and other MSI ICs Introduction to hardware description languages (HDLs: VHDL and Verilog), HDL based design, and the Xilinx Integrated Software Environment 9

10 Course Topics: Programmable logic device architectures Principles of state machine analysis and design State machine design with VHDL and Verilog Output logic and output signal conditioning circuits Sequential logic design practices and design documentation 10

11 Homework and Projects Several homework assignments and projects will be assigned throughout the semester. The instructor may assign some individual assignments, but for most homework assignments and projects, students are encouraged to work together. However, each student is responsible for understanding the course materials as well as submitting individual work. Late submissions for homework and projects will not be accepted. 11

12 Examinations A midterm exam will be given near the middle of the semester. A final exam will be given during final exam week. If for any reason a student is unable to attend an exam, arrangements with the instructor must be made prior to the test. If prior arrangement is not made, the student will receive a grade of zero for the exam. 12
