1 ECE 441/541 Advanced Digital Design and Field Programmable Gate Arrays Spring 2010 Course description: Course will provide a description of Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technologies and the methods using Computer Aided Design (CAD) design tools for implementation of digital systems using FPGAs. It provides advanced methods of digital circuit design, specification, synthesis, implementation and prototyping. It introduces practical system design examples. (Offered spring) Prerequisites: ECE 341 Texbook and other required materials: S. Kilts, Advanced FPGA Design: Architecture, Implementation, and Optimization, Wiley-Interscience, V. Pedroni, Circuit Design with VHDL, The MIT Press, (Supplementary) Altera UP 1 Education Board with Flex 10K20 FPGA and MAX7128 CPLD Parts kit from ECE 241 Course Learning Objectives: 1. Students will be able to design, specify, synthesize, simulate, and implement advanced digital systems on FPGAs. 2. Students will understand current applications and trends in FPGA technology. 3. Students will learn advanced VHDL programing techniques. 4. Students will develop, implement, and prototype a complex digital system. 5. Students will develop functional hardware modules and integrate them into a complete system. 6. Students will make use of external peripherals devices in their design projects. 7. Students will learn advanced code debugging, and hardware troubleshooting methods. 8. April 6 4. Course Policies Attendance As per university policy, students are expected to attend classes. The instructor must be informed in advance if absence is unavoidable, especially during the hands-on class sessions, and makeup work, if necessary, will be arranged at the discretion of the instructor. Home Work Assignments (Component Design) The related theory and design aspects of the class will be implemented gradually in functional components. These components will become a part of a large and complex digital system. The intention is to use VHDL CAD to design, simulate, and implement functional components, which will be added to the final project design at the end of the semester. It is imperative that each homework, and therefore each resulting component, is designed correctly. Unfinished home works will result in a unusable component, and therefore a failed final project. Students are advised to complete each homework thoroughly. Laboratory (Kaufman Hall 229/230) This class is designed to contain plenty of hands-on lab work with the Altera UP 1 Education Board with Flex 10K20 FPGA and MAX7128 CPLD. Lab time is to be used for construction, testing and demonstration of the designed circuits. Preparation should be carried out for completing each lab hands-on session successfully. This requires that you verify the correct operation of your components through simulation, before transferring the design on the Altera UP 1. Reports Any required results and/or observations from the home works are to be tabulated and recorded in a report. The report is due at the beginning of class, when specified in the course schedule (section 3). The lab report should contain the following sections (labeled accordingly): 1. Title page with Honor Pledge 2. Introduction 3. Theoretical Approach 4. Design 5. Implementation 6. Results 7. Observations and Conclusions 8. 5 Classroom Policies The following standards are intended to define acceptable classroom behavior that preserves academic integrity and ensures that students have optimum environmental conditions for effective learning: 1. Students must turn off cell phones and pagers during class or have them set to vibrate mode. 2. Classes are expected to begin on time, and students will respect the time boundaries established by the professor. If classroom doors are locked, students may not knock or seek entrance in other ways. 3. Students should notify instructors (and vice versa) in advance when a class will be missed. In the event of an emergency that causes a class to be missed, instructors must be notified as soon as possible. 4. Instructors may require that cell phones and other electronic devices be left on their desks during tests or examinations. 5. Students must not engage in extraneous conversations during classes. Such acts are considered to be violations of the Code of Student Conduct. 6. Students will activate their Old Dominion accounts and check them before each class. If the student chooses to have his/her messages forwarded to another account, it is the student's responsibility to take the necessary steps to have them forwarded. 7. Consumption of food and drink during class is prohibited, except when the professor has specifically approved of such acts. 8. Offensive language, gestures and the like are disrespectful and disruptive to the teaching-learning process. [ 5. Grading Criteria The course will be graded on the following scale: 3 Sub-Components 30% Mid-term exam + 10% Final project + 40% Final exam + 20% = 100% Each home work/report will be graded on the following scale: Report contents 40% Completion of experiments + 50% Component design + 10% = 100% 6.
