Challenged Traditional Assumptions to improve Data Center Efficiency (PUE)! Broaden operating range for temperature and humidity Based on IT equipment specifications Use the wider allowable ASHRAE psychometric range Use air side economizer with appropriate filtration Reduced Demand on cooling systems with Higher supply air temperature Higher supply air temperature More hours of air side economizer! Implement Containment of Hot/Cold aisles Increases Delta T across Hot/Cold aisles Reduces short circuiting Optimizes fan horsepower by increased Delta T at AHU! 21 Operation of Nishiyodo 106-ton Adsorption Chillers! COP between 0.5 and 0.7.! Exhaust heat exchangers generate hot water to approximately 185 Degrees F to drive the adsorption cycle! Adsorption chillers operate continuously in this cycle: 1. In chamber 1 - The heated water from the engine waste heat drives the water out from the sorbent material, effectively regenerating its capacity to adsorb, 2. In chamber 2 - Silica-gel desiccants chill water from approximate 85 F down to 45 F by adsorbing water vapor from the evaporator, 3. The released water vapor condenses and flows back into the evaporator. 4. When the sorbent in the chamber 2 is saturated with water, the evaporator switches to chamber 1 to continue the chilling process, and the cycle is repeated. NetApp Confidential. 21

Operating on an Economic basis! Cogeneration System is used to reduce Utility Import and generate cost savings! Favorable natural gas pricing makes the economics! Fixed Forward Natural Gas procurement practice was risk management to ensure the economic advantage was sustainable! Cogeneration System is operated only during the local Utility s Summer Rate Season! kw units are operated as base load generation! 3 rd unit is dispatched upon failure! Requirement is to maintain a 200 kw Utility import to ensure that the system will not reverse power to the Utility NetApp Confidential. 24
Economic Dispatch Schedule - IKUN NetApp Confidential. 25
Operational Challenges HESS Microgen withdrew from Industry! Had to find new Maintenance Contractorchallenged with executing a comprehensive maintenance contract! Had to find a new control system Nexgen was a proprietary system and no longer supported! Installed new control system ComAp and improved system operation with load following controls! Fortunately purchased 3 new motors and generators from HESS prior to closure so spare parts/inventory was available! Challenged with maintaining Uptime/Availability ~ 93.8% NetApp Confidential. 26
B11 DC ComAp Interface NetApp Confidential. 27
Final Thoughts for Cogeneration Ops Other Considerations! During a Demand Response Event, Interconnection agreements could be relaxed (32R relays disabled) to further reduce import or even export power to the Utility! In order for Cogeneration Systems to serve as back up, the Utility import needs to be minimized and strict load management controls has to be in place to minimize voltage sags and surges, and frequency deviations! Depending on the Data Center Design, cogeneration economics will be dictated by the mechanical cooling requirements NetApp s Free Cooling during the winter season reduces/eliminates the adsorption system contribution NetApp Confidential. 28
