3 A Letter from the President August 2013 Dear Students, Parents and Fans: Welcome to the Fall Sports Season at Saint Xavier High School! Each time the Tigers take the field for football or soccer, the course for some links or the trail for a cross country run, you can be sure that Saint Xavier student-athletes represent each one of us. May their preparation, efforts, team spirit, sportsmanship and camaraderie add to the storied history and traditions that define not only Saint Xavier athletics, but all that is good about St. X. As student peers, parents and fans, you are asked to bring the same attitudes and behaviors that demonstrate respect for opposing teams, support for officials and good cheer with one another. This year, Saint Xavier High School embarks upon a three-semester celebration of its 150th anniversary, concluding on the Feast of St. Francis Xavier, December 3, May we reflect on humble beginnings, the vision of Brother Paul Van Gerwen, CFX, the founder of St. X, and the impact of Xaverian education on the Louisville Metro community. The opportunities and blessings that today s families enjoy trace back to steadfast faith, solid leadership and the ability to endure hardship over the long haul for something that is inherently good. We are blessed, indeed! Enjoy this new Athletic Guide Book, celebrating each sports program, the athletes and coaches. My thanks to those who provided support for the book and to Mr. Mike Glaser and Mr. Alan Donhoff who logged many hours to complete the project in fine fashion. Enjoy the game and the season! Go Tigers! Perry E. Sangalli, Ed.D. President Saint Xavier High School MISSION STATEMENT Saint Xavier High School, a Catholic college preparatory school sponsored by the Xaverian Brothers since 1864, engages young men in rigorous academic programs and extracurricular activities that foster respect, honor and service to God s world. Our programs of study challenge students to grow intellectually and to think critically, welcoming students with different learning styles and mild learning differences. Exceptional instruction, guidance and coaching build enduring relationships while helping students to develop leadership skills, self-discipline and the attitudes essential for higher educational success and for becoming confident, capable and responsible stewards in a global society. 1

In 2007, the alumni recognition program was given a much-needed face-lift and Saint Xavier unveiled the Alumni Hall of Honors. This new program expanded the criteria for which an alumnus can be honored, to include career, social or academic achievements. At the same time, alumni who displayed athletic excellence in high school, college or professionally, continue to be honored. All Athletic Hall of Fame inductees and Outstanding Alumnus Award recipients are considered past honorees and members in the Alumni Hall of Honors. 2

5 Tradition Unequaled Saint Xavier High School became a member of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) in This was just two years after the association sanctioned its first state championship at the 1918 Sweet 16 basketball tournament. In nearly a century since that time, Saint Xavier s student athletes and teams have established a championship tradition that is unequaled throughout the Commonwealth. When the 1926 Tiger basketball team captured the school s initial KHSAA state championship, it began a legacy of athletic excellence that has accounted for 158 team titles and countless individual champions. While the Saint Xavier championship tradition traces its roots to the 1926 basketball crown, it is most apparent in the 49 team titles earned by the swimming & diving team. With consecutive streaks from 1947 to 1957, and the current record-setting standard of 25 that began in 1989, Tiger swimmers and divers have had unprecedented success. At the 1932 KHSAA tennis tournament, the doubles combination of Warfield Donohue 33 and George Trakas 33 teamed up for the first of many doubles and singles tennis titles the Tigers have earned over the years. Since 1982, the year that the KHSAA began its sanction of team championships, Saint Xavier has earned the title in 22 of the 32 tournaments, including five consecutive since The Saint Xavier baseball program has captured five state titles in its illustrious history and has produced many outstanding teams and players. The 1988 team, led by 2000 National League All-Star Paul Byrd 88, finished 30-5 and reached the KHSAA final four. The 1998 team, with former Major League Baseball player Chris Burke 98, finished the season at 33-2 as one of Saint Xavier s best teams ever. In each of the past three seasons, the Tigers advanced to the KHSAA Sweet 16 by winning the 7th Region title. The 1962 Saint Xavier basketball team, led by Olympic Gold Medalist Mike Silliman 62, won the last of the Tigers four state championships. When the St. X basketball team won the 7th Region crown and reached the Sweet 16 in 1995, it was the school s second trip to the state tournament since that 1962 championship season. The 2012 Tigers advanced to the finals of the always-tough 7th Region. While the tradition of Saint Xavier football evokes memories of outstanding teams and great players in the first half of the 20th century, the first recognized championships occurred back-to-back in 1956 and The Tigers brought home their first KHSAA sanctioned crown in Coach Mike Glaser s teams earned six titles, most recently in 2009, during his 31-year tenure. The Saint Xavier track team, golf team, and cross country team have all earned their shares of championships as well. The decade of the 1950s was a pivotal time for the championship tradition of all three programs as each earned its first title. The track team won its first title in 1950, the golf team triumphed in 1951, and the cross country harriers were victorious at the 1959 state meet. More recently, all earned championships in the 2001 calendar year. Golf and track repeated as champions in 2002, and the track team captured its third title in a row when it blitzed the field at the 2003 state meet. After a runner-up finish in 2003, the golfers took back the team title with a victory at the 2004 state tournament and earned back-to-back titles in 2008 and The cross country squad brought home back-to-back state titles when it tied a state and school record of 20 points in Since its inception under the guidance of Bro. David Freely in 1969, the Saint Xavier soccer team has established itself as one of the premier soccer programs in the nation. The Tigers have captured 14 KHSAA championships, including eight under current coach Andy Schulten. With the 2012 championship, the Tigers have now captured two consecutive titles and five of the past six, while going undefeated in their past 55 matches. In 1998, Saint Xavier wrestlers earned their first team state championship and joined the long list of Tiger champions. In winning the team championship that year, Saint Xavier accomplished the unprecedented feat of winning at least one state team championship in each of the KHSAA s 10 sanctioned sports. The Tiger wrestlers added their third state championship this past February. Saint Xavier s championship tradition is also evident in sports that are not currently sanctioned by the KHSAA. Forty-two state and national titles have been captured by Saint Xavier s volleyball, power-lifting, hockey, rugby, and lacrosse teams in sports not sanctioned by the KHSAA, the most recent being the rugby state title in The athletic programs at Saint Xavier have been built on the hard work and dedication of students and coaches. They depend on the loyalty and support of families, students, and alumni. Our tradition is one that is grounded in the values of the Xaverian Brothers and in the unending pursuit of excellence. 3

6 A Letter from the Athletic Director August 2013 Welcome to Saint Xavier Athletics: The school year promises to be one to remember for all of us in the St. X community. As we begin a celebration marking our 150th anniversary, we open a fall sport season that will provide all of us with many opportunities to cheer on our current students and coaches, just as we have done for those who have represented us throughout our illustrious athletic history. This 2013 Fall Sports Guide provides a glimpse at the history of each of our fall sports along with photographs and rosters of all of our current teams. Each of these teams has spent the off-season working diligently to prepare for the rigors of a highly competitive schedule. All have lofty goals and look forward to the challenges that they will face in order to achieve them. Athletic competitions provide opportunities for players, coaches and fans to reveal their character. Remember that sportsmanship matters and that interscholastic athletics is part of the total educational experience of high school. Enjoy the games! Alan H. Donhoff Athletic Director 4

8 Saint Xavier Facilities Brother John Wills, CFX, Sports Activities Center The final phase of Project X was completed in 2009 when the Tiger Basketball team moved to its new home in the Brother John Wills, CFX, Sports Activities Center. The 2,000-seat arena also includes the basketball locker room, St. X Campus Store, and Athletic Department offices and is the home of the Tiger Volleyball team. Doc Hamilton Sports Medicine Center Saint Xavier s Sports Medicine Center provides Tiger student athletes with first-class treatment and rehabilitation opportunities that utilize the talents of two full-time Certified Athletic Trainers. In addition, as an education center for student trainers, the center provides a unique environment for hands-on learning experiences from basic first aid to more advanced treatment regimens. Carl 45 and Rosemary Mueller Weight Center Occupying nearly 10,000 square feet, the weight room and training facility provide Saint Xavier students and student athletes with many opportunities to develop their strength and fitness. Outfitted with free weights, treadmills, and other training equipment, the facility is designed to accommodate all St. X teams, as well as members of the student body whose workouts are not associated with participation in the Athletic Program. Brother John Joseph Sterne, CFX, Gym Home of Tiger Basketball from its opening in 1961 until 2009, the gym is also the venue for the Saint Xavier Wrestling teams when they host tournaments. The multipurpose facility, with a capacity of 1,400, also serves as the primary site for physical education classes, school masses, and pep rallies. Throughout the school year, the gym is transformed to accommodate a variety of functions such as school dances, blood drives and a variety of alumni events. Cornelius E. Hubbuch Natatorium Opened in 1990, the Cornelius Hubbuch Natatorium is the home of the Tigers who have captured 25 consecutive KHSAA state team titles. The six-lane, 25-yard pool was recently updated and continues to be one of the top high-school facilities in the state. The site of many spirited meets over the years, it is also an important facility for the St. X Physical Education Department. 6

9 The Best for The Best Brother Thomas More Page Stadium The 6,000-seat stadium is home to the Tiger Football, Lacrosse, Soccer, Rugby, and Track and Field teams. Opened in 2007, the game field is a sports turf that combines the feel of a grass field with the durability of an artificial field. The all-weather field can resist the changing, unpredictable climate without having to sacrifice playability. The stadium hosts several events, including the Kentucky lacrosse state championship game, the KHSAA Regional Track and Field meet, KHSAA Sectional soccer matches, and football all-star games, as well as the Special Olympics Regional Championships. The Charles A. Brown, Jr. 58 Family Tennis Center The tennis center became the home of the Saint Xavier Tennis team in the spring of 2005 as Phase 1 of Project X was completed. Six tennis courts located in a beautiful setting in the southwest corner of the campus provide Tiger players with a first-class practice and competition facility. The tennis center has hosted KHSAA Regional, CSAA, and USTA tournaments. Carl 45 and Rosemary Mueller Baseball Field The home of the Tiger Baseball team was dedicated in the spring of With just over 500 permanent seats, an all-weather Sprinturf playing surface, home and visitor bullpens, and two batting cages, it is considered to be one of the top baseball facilities in the region. Baseball Training Facility The Saint Xavier Baseball team moved into a newly renovated indoor training facility during the school year. The generosity and hard work of a dedicated group of baseball parents and coaches have provided present and future Tigers with a state-of-the-art indoor hitting, fielding, pitching, and training area that rivals the facilities at many colleges and universities. Regardless of the outdoor weather conditions, St. X baseball players are now able to train effectively throughout the year. Tiger Wrestling Room The Saint Xavier Wrestling team has its home practice facility in the Driscoll Activities Center. This 4,500-square-foot wrestling room accommodates three mats and has padded boundary walls to provide a safe practice environment for the more than 80 students who participate in the program. The room is also an important facility for the Saint Xavier Physical Education Department and intramural program. 7

14 Cross Country Through the years The Saint Xavier Cross Country team earned its first state title in 1959 and established a benchmark for future Tigers to build upon for more than 50 years. During that time, the team has had its share of talented runners who were capable of capturing the individual state championship at the Kentucky High School State Meet, but the hallmark of the Tiger Harriers has always been the incredible depth and teamwork that are the seeds of championship performances. The 1959 squad coached by Brother Brennan became the first of 19 championship teams. The undefeated Tigers were led by individual state champion Joe Kroh who set a new school and state record at the state meet. Coach Jerry Denny became the new head coach in 1960, and the Tigers promptly earned their second consecutive title. After a third-place finish at the Regional meet, the Harriers put together their best race of the season to capture the state crown. The team returned to top form again in 1962 led by individual champion Blaine Vetter. By winning the title in both 1963 and 1964, the Tigers became the first team to capture three consecutive KHSAA Cross Country Championships. Coach Joe Heitzman s runners earned the championship in 1971 by turning in a stellar performance a week after a second-place finish at the regional meet. The 1973 and 1974 Tigers earned back-to-back titles in dominant fashion. Only a second-place finish at the Covington Catholic Invitational kept the 73 squad from an undefeated season, and the 74 team found individual champion David Buechler leading Paul Kinny (2nd) and Mark Grundy (4th) across the finish line. The 1979 squad was one of the best in Kentucky history and established the record for lowest point total ever (20) at the Kentucky state meet. Coach Frank Cooper s undefeated squad was led by individual champion Joe Buechler who returned the following year to capture his second title and lead the Tigers to the 1980 team championship. Team depth was on display in 1983 and 1984 as the Harriers earned the school s 11th and 12th titles. For the second time in Coach Cooper s tenure, the Tigers won the championship in consecutive years. After a decade of close calls, including a runner-up finish in 1993, the Tigers returned to the winner s circle by winning the title in In 1999 with Coach Chuck Medley at the helm, the Tigers earned the title led by the second-place finish of freshman Bobby Curtis. Bobby would become one of the greatest cross country runners in the history of the sport in Kentucky, following up his second place finish in 1999 with three consecutive individual crowns and another team title in The next two cross country championships were earned in completely different fashions. The 2005 crown was one of the closest championship meets in KHSAA history as the Tigers prevailed by a mere 15 points. In 2009 the 77-point margin was the third largest ever. The spectacular team performances of the past two seasons demonstrate the depth of talented runners in the program. Individual champion Conner Sheryak and second-place finisher Sam Lewis led five Tigers in the top 11 to a 31 point total and the 2011 title. The 2012 squad became the second St. X team to score a record 20 points in winning the championship. Five Tigers finished in a pack less than eleven seconds apart to dominate the field and earn the school s record 19th KHSAA championship. 12

15 2013 Cross Country Chuck Medley Head Cross Country Coach Chuck enters his 24th year as a cross country coach at Saint Xavier High School in 2013 and his 16th year leading the program as the head coach. He began his coaching career at St. X as an assistant coach in the cross country and track programs for eight years under the leadership of his friend and mentor legendary Coach Frank Cooper. When Coach Cooper retired from cross country in 1997, Chuck was promoted to the head coaching position. In the 16 seasons since, Chuck has built upon the program s tradition of excellence and has made the Tigers a perennial championship contender. Under his guidance, the team has earned six state titles (1999, 2001, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2012) and finished as the state runner up on three other occasions. The program has gained prominence throughout the country in recent years and has advanced as high as fifth in the national high school cross country rankings. Coach Medley sums up his approach to coaching this way: My philosophy as the St. X head coach is to work to make sure that each of my athletes enjoys his cross country experience as much as I enjoyed cross country in high school. If I can get them to enjoy the sport, then the success that we have had will continue. Chuck and his wife, Wendy, have one daughter, Anna, 13. 16 Cross Country Season Outlook In 2012 the Tigers completed what many will argue as the finest season in the history of the program. During their record-setting season, they compiled an impressive record with 11 first-place finishes, one second-place finish, and a 14th place finish in the prestigious Nike Cross Country National Meet in Portland, Ore. At the KHSAA State Championship Meet, the Tigers won the title for the second consecutive year while tying the state record of 20 points, the fewest cumulative team points in the history of the event. Although five of the top seven runners from last year have graduated, the team returns a strong group of talented runners and expects to contend for another championship in The returning runners will be motivated by the possibility of winning three in a row for only the second time in St. X cross country history. Chris Striegel, who finished fifth at state, and Max Mudd, who finished seventh, will be counted on to lead the team this year. Also returning with varsity experience and talent are Stephen Kinny, Daniel Santos, Ben Glover, Jeremy Burch, William Mulloy, Ben Metzger, and Spencer Hayden. 24 Football Through the years Saint Xavier High School was already more than 50-years-old when its football team took the field for the first time in In the nearly 100 years since that first game, the Saint Xavier football program has provided an experience that has helped countless young men on their journeys to manhood. In 1917 the first Green and Gold football team took to the field under Coach Will Duffy. The 20s, 30s,and 40s established a strong foundation for the Tradition of Excellence under the leadership of coaches like Joe Harmon, Joe Guyon, Bob Schumann, and Ray Baer. In 1934 Gilbert Sturtzel became the first of many Tiger football players to be named First Team All-State. Coach Johnny Meihaus led the Tigers into the modern era beginning in He guided the program for 17 seasons, amassing 118 wins and three state championships (1956, 1957, and 1962). The 1956 and 1957 Tigers posted identical records to earn the school s first two state football titles. The Kentucky High School Athletic Association began its sanction of the football state championship in 1959, and the 1962 Tigers earned the school s first KHSAA title with a thrilling 7-6 win over Valley in the mud. Coach Leon Dunagan led the Tigers to the program s first undefeated and untied season in The 15-0 victory over Butler in the title game capped a perfect 13-0 season and earned St. X another state championship. The 1974 and 1975 Tigers combined to go 25-0 and earn back-to-back state titles for the second time in school history. Coach Bill Glaser left the Tiger program after two years and remains the only coach to compile a perfect career coaching record. The 75 come-from-behind playoff win, over Trinity, is remembered as one of the most dramatic finishes in Tiger football history. The 1978 Tigers began the season by defeating Thomas Jefferson in the first and last Kentucky State Fair Bowl. The team completed the year with a 13-2 record and a state championship victory over Lexington Tates Creek. In 1982 Coach Mike Glaser became the 17th St. X head football coach and began a 31-year run in which the Tigers won seven state championships and were state runner up four times. In 1986, the Tigers defeated Boone County in the 4A title game, providing Coach Glaser with the first of his seven championships. The 1991 season ended with a heartbreaking loss in the state title game as the Tiger offense was stopped on the four-inch line on the final play of the game. The following year the Tigers returned with a vengeance to complete unfinished business. They ended the season with a 14-1 record and defeated Boone County for the 1992 State Championship. The rest of the 90s saw the Tigers dominate the football scene with championships in 1995, 1997, and 1999, giving St. X four state 4A championships and one state runner-up finish in the decade. The 1997 championship game was played in freezing temperatures, and, for the first time, the Tigers and Rocks were matched in a state championship game. The defensive struggle was decided by a lone field goal as the Tigers prevailed 3-0 in the final St. X/Trinity game to be played in Old Cardinal Stadium. 22

25 Football Through the years In 1998 the St. X/Trinity Classic moved to the University of Louisville s Papa John s Cardinal Stadium and annually draws close to 35,000 fans for one of the nation s biggest rivalry games. The 1999 title game was decided in overtime when the Tigers, trailing 31-28, scored the gamewinning touchdown on a 4th and goal play from the one yard line to earn the victory. The Tigers earned their most recent state titles in 2004 and 2009, seasons in which they posted identical 14-1 records. State runner-up finishes in 2003, 2005, and 2007 and the championships in 2004 and 2009 gave the Tigers five state title game appearances in the first decade of the 21st century. In 2008 All State running back Rolandan Deuce Finch became the first St. X football player to ever be named Mr. Football in the state of Kentucky was the final season in the 31-year career of Coach Mike Glaser. His record of 336 wins and 78 losses ranks him as the coach with the most wins in St. X football history. The 2013 Tigers look to a bright future as they work to bring the title back to St. X under the leadership of new coach Will Wolford. Saint Xavier Football The Tradition Continues. Football Season Outlook The 2013 Tiger football team returns a great deal of experience from a successful season a year ago. With a talented group of seniors and juniors as well as a promising group of sophomores, the team is striving for a return to the top of the charts and to vie for a state championship when December arrives. On the offensive side of the ball, in addition to experience, the Tigers are blessed with size, speed, and depth. In the backfield, Austin Davis, Treyveon Percell, and 2-year starter Charles Walker all return after excellent junior campaigns. The offensive line is led by returning starter John Kurtz, and with Austin Askin, Ryan Karrer, Stephen Gray, and Zane Meiners, and support and depth from newcomers, Nathan Scheler and Tyler Haycraft, the Tigers have one of the best groups of linemen in the program s storied history. The quarterback position will be headed by strong-armed senior BJ Nagle and junior Noah Houk. They will be throwing to a host of talented receivers led by returning starter Will Roshkowski, along with converted QB Luke Hayden, Nick King, Trey Dornfeld, Lincoln Bisig, Corey Hughes, and senior tight ends Sam Gray and Evan Shaheen. On defense, the new-look Tigers look to swarm their opponents at the line of scrimmage and make big plays in the backfield and in the secondary. In the trenches will be an outstanding group of defensive linemen led by Lenny Broyles, Clay Schaefer, Skyler Robinson, and Austin Krueger. The linebackers return a number of experienced players, including Andrew McCormick, Patrick Wilbourn, and Spencer Foy, as well as Malik Carr, Evan Caffee, and Wes Parker. Dakota Jones returns as a starter to lead the secondary along with Russ Miller, Ryan Askin, Blake Issacs, Ryan Pike, and juniors Davey Sermersheim, Brandon Blaser, and Tyler Boarman 23

44 Golf through the years Since the KHSAA sanctioned its first Golf Championship in 1935, the Tigers have proven to be the gold standard for excellence and tradition throughout the Commonwealth. Beginning with the first state championship in 1951, the golf program has established a legacy of championship success that is second to none. With 13 individual winners and 18 team titles, Saint Xavier golfers have consistently proven themselves to be the most dominant program in Kentucky. Under the guidance of Brother Edward Joseph, the team captured the school s first four state titles (1951, 1952, 1954, and 1957). Bobby Nichols became the school s first individual winner in He repeated as champion in 1954 before enjoying a professional career that included the 1967 Ryder Cup team, a second place finish at the 1967 Masters, and 12 PGA Tour victories, including the 1964 PGA Championship where he beat Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicholas with a record low score that would stand for 30 years. Frank Beard was the 1957 individual state champion before becoming a regular on the PGA Tour. While on the Tour, he was a member of the Ryder Cup teams in 1969 and 1971, captured 11 tour victories, and topped the PGA Tour money list in In 1958, Eddie Schnurr became the last individual winner under Brother Edward Joseph. Marty Donlon took over the program in 1963 and established the Kentucky Invitational Tournament (KIT) that showcases the best talent in the region marks the 50th anniversary of the event. Mike Zimmerer guided the Tigers to the 1966 championship and captured the individual title as well. From 1967 until Pat Vadden won in 1991, the Tigers would not have an individual champion, but would secure four team titles, including back-to-back championships in 1981 and In 1999, Brandon Waldrop started a trend that would see the Tigers capture both the individual and team titles within the same year in three of the next five seasons (Robbie Shaw, 2001; Jessie Mudd, 2002; and Matt Savage, 2004). Marty Donlon retired as coach in 2007 after continuing the tradition of excellence for 45 years. Coach Donlon s teams captured 12 team championships and six individual titles. Dan Utley was introduced as the new golf coach and replaced the longest-tenured head coach in school history. David Payne added to the legacy of champion golfers when he captureed the 2008 crown and helped secure the team title in 2008, earning Coach Utley a team title in his first year. In 2009, Justin Thomas claimed the state crown and guided the team to its 18th state championship. Justin played on the 2010 Junior Ryder Cup team and earned the Haskins Award as NCAA Player of the Year in 2012 as a freshman at the University of Alabama. His 2013 Alabama team was NCAA National Champion. In 2011, Stephen Stallings became the most recent Tiger to win the individual state title. The team was runner-up at both the 2011 and 2012 state tournaments. 42

45 2013 Golf Dan Utley Head Golf Coach Dan enters his sixth season as the Saint Xavier Head Golf Coach in After playing both football and golf at Lexington s Tates Creek High School, Dan had to make a choice between the two when the KHSAA made golf a fall sport in When he chose to follow his love for the game, it opened the door on a stellar golf career. Dan played collegiate golf at the University of Louisville where he lettered for four years and served as team captain in his final two years as a Cardinal. An accomplished amateur player who won the Kentucky State Amateur Championship in 1994, he turned professional a year after graduation and began teaching and working at various clubs throughout the southeast. He has held various positions, but all have had the common ingredient of helping others get better at the game of golf. Before taking over the reins of the Saint Xavier program, Dan served as an assistant coach in the SEC at the University of Kentucky and as an agent representing professional golfers. His philosophy as a coach and teacher of the game is pretty simple: Prepare to be the best. He wants his players to be confident and feel that they are the best players in the state every time they tee it up in a match. Dan is the father of two daughters, Mallory, 7, and Meredith, 2, who can be seen cheering on Dad and the Tiger golf team during the season. Golf Season Outlook The 2014 Tigers will look to returning players Brendon Doyle and Michael Sass to be the experienced team leaders after the departures of Cooper Musselman, Stephen Stallings, Ben Sullivan, and Luke Jones, four key players who graduated in the spring. The remainder of the team, while without a great deal of varsity experience, is loaded with depth and talent. Christian Vining, Paxton Duff, John Lechleiter, Jimmy Gates, Matt Liston, Billy Basham, Allen Hamilton, and others have a great opportunity to move up the depth chart while demonstrating their abilities and helping the team succeed. 50 The Power of Saving over Time It is important to understand just how much saving today can impact your wealth tomorrow. The power of compounding interest over a long time horizon can be a huge advantage to your retirement nest egg. Consider the following example: Nick, age 25 has landed a communications position that he sees as a real career opportunity. He understands the importance of tax deferred saving for retirement and realizes he needs to begin. As a result, he decides to contribute $200 a month in his IRA plan. Although Nick will probably increase his contributions as his income increases, you can see from the chart below how much $200 a month is potentially able to generate over a long period of time. The power of compounding interest over a long time horizon can be a huge advantage to your retirement nest egg. Because Nick has time on his side, assuming an 8% annual return he could accumulate over $700,000 (A) by age 65 even if he never increases his contribution of $200 a month. To illustrate the importance of saving early, if Nick saves until age 45 and then stops, he still would have over $584,000 (B) at age 65. As you can see, the vast majority of his wealth is due to the compounding of his first twenty years of savings. Conversely, should Nick begin saving at age 45 until the age of 65, he would only have $118,589 (C). Retirement isn t a destination but an existence that consists of the rest of our lives. It is important that we have the right amount of financial resources to sustain us through that time. Saving as much as we can as early as we can will make all the difference! Talk to your Financial Consultant about how contributing to an employer sponsored plan or IRA can help you achieve your goals. Balance at age 65 $900, , ,000 (A) $702,586 (B) $584,267 Charlton P. 54 Soccer through the years Since its inception in 1969, the Tiger Soccer program has demonstrated excellence both on the field and in the classroom. Throughout its 44 years of existence, the players and coaches have created a legacy of success that is unsurpassed in Kentucky and has been recognized on the national scene for both its performance and academic accomplishments. Some of them include: Brother David Freely coached the Tigers to their first title in 1969 prior to the sport becoming sanctioned by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association. In 1972 and 1973 the soccer teams captured back-to-back state championships under the direction of Brother Johan Gegner. These were the first two years of play sanctioned by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association. Coach Mark Saurer led the Tigers to another title in the fall of 1981 during a time that the KHSAA sanctioned championship was held in the spring. The Tigers have won nine of the 19 titles awarded by the KHSAA since Coach Rick Blair 66 led the team to titles in 1994 and Coach Andy Schulten s Tiger soccer teams have captured eight of 13 championships awarded in the 21st century. St. X teams have 14 total titles, 12 sanctioned by the KHSAA. These titles are spread through every decade since the first one in The 2012 team earned a #3 national ranking as it won a second consecutive state crown and extended the program s unbeaten streak to 55 matches. Three St. X players have been named Kentucky s Mr. Soccer since 2000: Ray Burse (2001), Kevin Bick (2007 & 2008), and Kaelon Fox (2012). The Tigers have earned Academic All-American Team status in six of the past 11 seasons (2002, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2012). Nine members of the Class of 2013 have signed to play soccer at the collegiate level, joining five more from the Class of Soccer Staff Left to right: Ted Nichols, Samuel Picota, Nathan Durbin, Head Coach Andy Schulten, Tony Distler, Brad Walsh 55 Consecutive game unbeaten streak as the Tiger Soccer team opens the 2013 season 52

55 2013 Soccer Andy Schulten Head Soccer Coach Andy is a 1987 graduate of Saint Xavier High School where he played soccer for four years and earned All-State recognition in his senior year. After St. X he attended Centre College and earned his undergraduate degree in history and english. While at Centre he lettered four years in soccer and earned NSCAA All- Region honors. He also lettered two years in swimming and held the Centre College school record in the 200-yard breaststroke until Andy began his coaching career at St. X in 1994 as an assistant soccer and swim coach. In 1998, after four years as an assistant, he was promoted to Head Soccer Coach. Andy s impressive career record as the head coach of the Tigers stands at with eight state championships (2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012). In 2011 he was named National Soccer Coach of the Year. During his tenure, the St. X soccer program has established itself as the premiere soccer program in the state of Kentucky and as one of the best programs in the nation. Andy and his wife, Stephanie, have four children: Jake, 12; Josh, 10; Samantha, 9; and Mara, KHSAA State Champions 53

56 Soccer Season Outlook The soccer team returns to action this fall after posting an impressive season record and capturing a second consecutive state championship in Once again the Tigers should be among the best in the state with an opportunity to challenge for the KHSAA state title in November. While the 2013 team enters the season with a 55-match unbeaten streak, it also enters without 14 of the top 15 players from a year ago. An inexperienced roster that will include several sophomores will be challenged by a difficult schedule as it learns to play together and rounds into top form. The lone returning starter, senior Joe Workman, will be a candidate for the prestigious 2013 Kentucky Mr. Soccer award. A talented striker, he will be counted on to be an important playmaker for the Tigers. Midfielder Bobby Buse and newcomer Jack Somervell will also see significant minutes and are counted on to have breakout seasons. The strengths of the Tigers should be in the ability to attack, led by Workman, along with the overall depth of the team. An unproven defense and uncharacteristic inexperience will provide big challenges for the 2013 team. With a lot of hard work and the willingness to grasp and execute the St. X soccer system, the Tigers should once again be in the hunt for another championship Soccer Schedule Date opponent Site TIME 8/13...CAL (scrimmage)...h... 7:00 PM 8/20...Central Hardin...A... 7:00 PM 8/22...Collegiate...H... 7:00 PM 8/24...Ballard....H... 7:00 PM 8/26...Lexington Cath...H... 7:00 PM 8/30...Liberty/SLUH...H... 8:00 PM 8/30...Trinity vs Lib/SLUH...H... 6:00 PM 8/31...SLUH/Liberty...H... 1:30 PM 8/31...Trinity vs Lib/SLUH...H... 3:30 PM 9/5...South Oldham...H... 7:00 PM 9/10...Male...A... 7:00 PM 9/14...Greenwood...H... 1:45 PM 9/17...Collins...H... 7:00 PM 9/19...Manual...H... 7:00 PM 9/21...Brebeuf...A... 3:30 PM 9/23...Eastern...A... 7:00 PM 9/24...Brown...A... 5:00 PM 9/30...Atherton....A... 7:00 PM 10/2...Trinity...A... 7:00 PM 10/4-10/5..Gateway City Classic..A... 10/10...Oldham Co...H... 7:00 PM 10/12...St. Henry H... 1:00 PM 54
