2 Teacher Education Banquet and Notable Alumni On Wednesday, October 7, 2015 the Teacher Education Department held their annual Teacher Education Banquet. Each year the department chooses Adrian College Alumni to honor at the banquet. The 2015 Notable Alumni were Kay Johnson and Ryan Gilbert. Ryan Gilbert Kay Johnson Kay Johnson graduated in 1972 from Adrian College majoring in Exercise Science. She spent 23 years in the middle school teaching Health and Physical Ed and 7th grade math, before spending 15 years as middle school principal. Kay continued coaching softball through three years of retirement, then returned three years ago to work part time as the athletic director. Coached most all girl's sports including all 43 years of softball. She was inducted into Athletic Hall of Fame in Ryan Gilbert Ryan Gilbert graduated from Adrian College in 2006 with Bachelors degree in Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Elementary Education. This is Ryan s 9th year as the Physical Education teacher at Blissfield Elementary. He is coaching the Girls Varsity Basketball team at Blissfield Community Schools. In 2014, Gilbert was named Class C Co-Coach by the Associated Press and was also awarded the Lenawee County Coach of the Year honor. 2

3 Writers Workshop at Adrian Middle School 7/8 Building Professor Beth Myers ENGL 310 Teaching Writing students hosted a Writers Workshop at the Adrian Middle School 7/8 Building for the fall semester every Tuesday from 3:00 4:30 PM. The Writers Workshop was an after school activity to help students find their writing voice. Teacher Education student, Garret Gabalis, is working with students on their writing. It was nice to collaborate as a large group and provide something great to give back to our community. Our group was a combination of teacher education students and English majors. We learned a lot from one another as well as the talented seventh and eighth grade students we worked with. I am thankful to Professor Meyers for giving us the opportunity to grow in our craft as well as the insight she carefully scaffolded. - Nicole Gestwite, T ED Student 3

4 Most Likely to Succeed Film Screening On October 19, 2015, the Adrian College Teacher Education Department and the Institute for Education provided a unique opportunity to view the award-winning documentary, Most Likely To Succeed. Lenawee County area community members who are interested in the future of our schools were in attendence. The feature-length documentary examines the history and current status of education in the United States, revealing the growing shortcomings of conventional education methods in today's innovative world. The film explores compelling new approaches that aim to revolutionize teaching as we know it. The film ran for 90 minutes and was followed by a panel discussion that included the executive producer, local students, educators and community leaders. 5 Experiential Learning Secondary science methods students: Adam Davies, John Carlin, and Samantha McMahon are pictured below participating in this semester long experience. Janet Struble, a representative from the Challenger Learning Center of Lake Erie West conducts the Toxic Waste activity. Mr. Gary Koppelman, 2013 National Shell Teaching Award, Inductee into the 2014 National Teachers Hall of Fame, and is a teacher at Blissfield Elementary, shows off Rosie the Tarantula at the Blissfield Environmental Life Laboratory belllab/ Our students learning about animal adaptations (in this case, the beaver) with Kerry Nieman, Stubnitz Environmental Education Program Coordinator. 5

6 SHAPE Michigan Annual Conference This years annual SHAPE Michigan (Society for Health & Physical Education) conference was held in Lansing from November 5-7. Two of our current students attended, Haley Barnes and Hayden Craig. Haley not only attended, but SHAPE Michigan awarded her a Major of the Year Award for Adrian College in Health and Physical Education. Both Haley s parents were in attendance at the awards ceremony. Haley also was elected to the role of Vice-President of the Young Professionals division of the state organization. Haley capped off her successful and exciting weekend by presenting a workshop at the conference on After-School Activities in Relation to Self- Esteem in Adolescent Girls. The reviews were outstanding. Congratulations to Haley Barnes! Teacher Education Alumni Panel On Tuesday, November 17, Professor Al Craven invited back former Teacher Education students Danny Taylor, Melanie Vincent, and Eric Schmidt along with senior, Mallory Wooden, to speak to his TED101 Explorations in Education class. This panel answered student questions and did an outstanding job of displaying professionalism, while providing great advice and recommendations to the class of future teachers. 6

7 Teacher Education Bootcamp The Teacher Education Department combined with the Institute for Career Planning held a College to Career Bootcamp on Saturday, November 21, The day consisted of Teacher Education students, who are either currently student teaching, or will be student teaching next semester, attending a variety of sessions throughout the day. The sessions held were as follows: Teacher Education Job Search Steve Guerra, the superintendent from Addison Community Schools, held this session and explained what sorts of things schools look for in their candidates. He shared how things are run at Addison Community Schools, and also provided information on how they may potentially differ from other school districts. Financial Planning Amy Parten, Education Specialist from Green Path Debt Solutions, held a session on different types of loans, repayment options, postponing payments, forgiveness programs, and the consequences of defaulting on loans. Mock Interviews Mock interviews were held with a variety of local professionals from the education field. After interviews the professionals wrote a review for the students to see where their strengths and needs for improvement were evident in the interview. Career Planning and Alumni An overview session of all of the wonderful services that the Career Planning and Alumni office offer to current students and, of course, Adrian College alumni. 8 Northwest Ohio Center of Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education Dr, Andrea R. Milner, Dr. Vanessa Morrison, and Teacher Education graduate student, Loren Hayes, attended the 2015 N.W.O. Symposium on Saturday, November 21, The N.W.O. Symposium is a very popular professional development opportunity in the region for K-12 pre-service teachers, in-service teachers, graduate students, school administrators, and higher education faculty. Dr. Milner and Dr. Morrison proudly presented on the framework which integrates K-2 STEM Problem-Based Learning with the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) and CCSS (Common Core State Standards).
