VUU freshman arrived to campus on August 8th and 9th and participated in the Freshman Orientation Events including Covocatum Est Ceremony. Convocatum Est is a ceremony of matriculation officially welcoming new students to the University and inducting them as members of the Virginia Union University community. Faculty dress in academic regalia and new students are dressed in black and white professional attire. Students participate in an official medaling

2 Page 2 of 8 ceremony while having an opportunity to greet the President and First Lady in the presence of faculty, staff, students and friends of the University. The ceremony takes place each fall to represent the opening of the academic year. Ceremony participants include all students who are new to the University.... VUU ALUMNUS TO RECEIVE PRESIDENTS CLUB OF DAYTON CITIZEN LEGION OF HONOR AWARD Dr. Clark Beck '51 is the 65th recipient of the region's 2015 Citizen Legion of Honor Award. The award, given every year since 1951, is the oldest and most continuous recognition service in the Dayton area. This award is given

3 Page 3 of 8 to citizens of Dayton and the Miami Valley who demonstrate outstanding volunteer leadership and commitment to their communities. Dr. Beck's life of service is inspired by second chances. After one university told him, "your people cannot be engineers", he not only proved them wrong but in 1955 became the first African-American to earn a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Cincinnati. In 1987, Beck founded the STEM program in the area, Wright STEPP, at Wright State University. The program helps female and minority students prepare for college in technical disciplines that also provides full tuition scholarships at WSU. Dr. Beck has been deeply involved in many service organizations throughout the region and was the first black president of the Dayton Engineers Club. "Dr. Beck has exemplified what it means to serve, giving back in ways that have changed the lives of others," said Phil Plummer, President of the Presidents Club. Beck will be honored on Thursday, October 1, 2015 at the Dayton Convention Center.... VUU ATHLETICS TO HOST HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY

4 Page 4 of 8 Virginia Union University has announced the names of its 2015 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees. The ceremony which will take place on Friday, September 25, during the school's Hall of Fame Weekend on the University campus. Hugh Brown, Walter Cowan, the late Russell Donan, Ben Miles, Cornell Moore, Corinne Thomas and Stanley White will enter the Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be emceed by Sean Robertson of WTVR (Channel 6) in Richmond, Va. A table may be purchased for $ with seating of 10 or $40.00 for individual tickets. Tickets may be purchased at the VUU Athletic Department or at the C.D. King Building Cashier Office between 9 a.m. and 4p.m. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the program will start at 7:00 p.m. in the Claude G. Perkins Living and Learning Center on the VUU campus. The Virginia Union University Hall of Fame inducted its first members in 1928, honoring 16 members of the men's football and basketball teams. The 1923 National Championship Football Team saw all of its members inducted into the Hall of Fame. The next class would not be inducted for another 60 years. When the Hall of Fame was resurrected in 1988, a record 31 members were welcomed into its hallowed halls, including the first female student-athletes. Six years would pass before the Hall of Fame inducted more members. Today, 111 of the most stellar student-athletes to ever wear a Virginia Union uniform grace the Hall of Fame. In 2015, seven more will join its ranks. The 2015 inductees will also be honored in a pre-game ceremony before the football game between VUU and Johnson C. Smith University on Saturday, September 26, at Hovey Field CLASSES IN REUNION CELEBRATING CLASSES ENDING IN 5'S & 0'S AND THE GOLDEN CLASS OF 1965

5 Page 5 of 8 VUU classes ending in 5's and 0's will celebrate their class reunion during Homecoming On Friday, October 16, 2015 Virginia Union University will host the Classes in Reunion Dinner at 6pm in the Claude G. Perkins Living and Learning Center. The semi-formal event will recognize the classes celebrating their reunion and honor the Class of 1965 as they celebrate their 50th anniversary. Classes will have the opportunity to reunite with their classmates and take class photos. Tickets for this event are $70. Members of the Class of 1965 are admitted at no charge. To purchase tickets call RECENT GRADUATE REPRESENTS VUU IN GOVERNOR'S FELLOWS PROGRAM Faith Barbour '15, recently completed her fellowship with the Governor's Fellows Program in Richmond, Virginia under the leadership of the current Governor Terence R. McAuliffe. She is the first VUU student to participate in the program. The prestigious program was established in 1982 to allow students and graduates the

6 Page 6 of 8 opportunity to experience state administration and government. Barbour along with 35 other fellows from Virginia colleges gained experience within various sectors of the government including education, homeland security and public safety, finance, transportation, commerce and trade, communications and others. " I had the privilege of working with the wonderful staff in the Secretary of Education office, the Honorable Anne Holton. I worked alongside the Deputy Secretary of Education of Higher Education, Dietra Trent," said Barbour. " I was able to attend various meetings, conferences, field trips, and bill signings featuring the Governor of Virginia. Also, I shadowed the Mansion director with planning events, such as the Juneteenth celebration and the Oliver Hill portrait unveiling held in the Executive Mansion." Faith found her experience to be very rewarding and thanks VUU for supporting her in all of her endeavors. "I would like to thank President Perkins, Ms. Charmica Epps, and Virginia Union University for supporting me in my journey. This program which has been a transformational experience that has allowed me to gain so many relationships and so much knowledge about state government in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
