1 Encryption SecurenCrypt encryption was designed to work as a plug-in with Microsoft Outlook. The following instructions are geared toward users encrypting with Outlook. However, throughout the step-by-step instructions, you will find alternatives if you do not currently have Outlook. After you install SecurenCrypt, you will notice the new SE toolbar when you open Microsoft Outlook with all the SE buttons you need. As well, a private encryption key is generated for you. Anyone receiving an encrypted from you must have your encryption key to decrypt your s. If you receive encrypted s, you will also need the encryption key from the sender. Once you send your encryption key, that recipient will be able to decrypt from you. You can send encrypted to anyone. However, recipients must have SE Lite or the full version of the software. How do I send my encryption key? 1. Make sure you are logged in to SecurenCrypt. *If you are not logged into SecurenCrypt and attempt to send your key, you will receive this prompt asking for your username and password to Log-in.* 2. The buttons functions exactly the same.* How do I save an encryption key sent to me? When receiving encrypted from a user who has SecurenCrypt, you will need their encryption key to decrypt their . SecurenCrypt saves encryption keys sent to you in the senders contact information in Microsoft Outlook contacts. Follow the step-by-steps below to save an encryption key sent to you. Once you save the key, you can decrypt all following s from that e- mail address. You will not need to enter the key each time. Page 2

3 1. Make sure you are logged in to SecurenCrypt. *If you are not logged into SecurenCrypt and attempt to save a key, you will receive this prompt asking for your username and password to Log-in.* 2. Click Yes when asked to save the encryption key sent to you (When a sender s you their encryption key, this option will automatically pop-up.) This saves the encryption key, and you now are able to decrypt from the senders address sent to you. If you miss this step, you can also manually save the key following the step-by-step instructions below. 1. Make sure you are logged in to SecurenCrypt. *If you are not logged into SecurenCrypt and attempt to save a key, you will receive this prompt asking for your username and password to Log-in.* Page 3

4 2. Copy the encryption key. Select and highlight the encryption key in the body of the e- mail. Right click and choose Copy from the drop down menu. 3. Select the sender s address. Right click on the name or address shown in the From field of the . Choose either Look up Outlook Contact if the person is already saved in your contacts or Add to Outlook Contacts if you wish to create a new contact. Page 4

5 This will open a new or current contact in your Outlook address book. SecurenCrypt provides a section at the bottom of the contact information to save the encryption key. 4. Paste the key. Right click in the SE encryption key space provided and choose Paste from the drop down menu. *TIP: If you have Office 2003, your contact window looks different. See the instructions on the next page.* 5. Save the key: Click Save & Close. This saves the encryption key provided with that contact allowing you to decrypt s from that address saved with that contact. *TIP: If you have Outlook 2003, you will need to click the Encryption Key button and then paste the key in the box provided. 6 *TIP: You can locate your contact list in the lower left hand corner of Microsoft Outlook * Where can I view my encryption key? 1. Make sure you are logged in to SecurenCrypt. *If you are not logged into SecurenCrypt and attempt view your key, you will receive this prompt asking for your username and password to Log -in.* 2. Open Microsoft Outlook. 3. Click the About button in the SE toolbar. This will open the About SE pop-up allowing you to view the website and the support phone number. Page 6

7 4. Click Close to finish. How do recipients decrypt my ? Recipients who have SecurenCrypt and Outlook will be able to store your encryption key in their contacts and will be able to decrypt your s with one click. If the recipient does not have SecurenCrypt, SE Lite is available as a free download that will enable them to decrypt your s. They will not have the ability to encrypt outgoing unless they upgrade to the full version of SecurenCrypt. Visit for the SE Lite download. What does an encrypted look like? When you receive an encrypted message, it will look like the screenshot below. You will notice instructions in the body of the , and your encrypted is attached. Page 7

8 How do I send encrypted ? Sending encrypted from Microsoft Outlook is easy. 1. Make sure you are logged in to SecurenCrypt. *If you are not logged into SecurenCrypt and attempt to encrypt you will receive this prompt asking for your username and password to Log-in.* 2. Open Microsoft Outlook. 3. Click New to create a new message. 4. Type your message as you normally would. 5. Click the encrypt message button to encrypt the . *TIP: If you are using Office 2003, the SE toolbar will look like this in Outlook. The buttons functions exactly the same.* Page 8

9 Your message is now encrypted and attached. You will notice that SE auto-generates detailed instructions for decrypting in the body of the for the recipient. 6. Click Send. Your encrypted message has now been sent. *TIP: As an additional security feature any items in your sent box that you encrypted will remain encrypted. If you wish to view a message you sent encrypted, you may click the decrypt button. *TIP: ALL ENCRYPTED WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE MARKED WITH A DATE AND TIME STAMP VERIFYING THE ENCRYPTION. The screenshot below shows what this looks like. How do I decrypt incoming s? To decrypt incoming s, you must first have the sender s encryption key. You will be prompted to save the key. SecurenCrypt will automatically save this key in your Outlook contact information for future s from that person, so you only need to receive their encryption key once. There are several ways you can decrypt incoming s. Page 9

10 1. Click once on the message in your inbox to select it. 2. Click the decrypt Message button on the SE toolbar You will now be able to read your decrypted in the reading pane. 11 2. Click the decrypt Message button. You will now be able to read your decrypted . Can I re-encrypt my after I read it? If you decrypt a message and wish to re-encrypt it, you can. Simply encrypt by clicking the encrypt Message button on the SE toolbar. SecurenCrypt will now encrypt this message using YOUR e- mail encryption Key. How to encrypt attachments Encrypting attachments is as easy as sending an encrypted . Simply attach files to your as you normally would and include an message if you want to. Then click the encrypt button and send as you normally would. SecurenCrypt automatically encrypts attachments with the . All types of attachments can be encrypted. Can I encrypt any message in my inbox? To enhance your privacy, you may also encrypt any that you want kept private in your inbox. Simply select the and click the encrypt icon, or right click on the and select encrypt from the drop down menu. To decrypt, follow the same procedure and click decrypt. When you choose to decrypt that you have chosen to encrypt in your inbox you will be prompted to enter a key. Simply click Use My Key since you are the one who encrypted the message and it will decrypt. You may encrypt and decrypt e- mails in your inbox as many times as you like. What does an encrypted really look like? Although you will never see what encryption looks like, we wanted to show you. When you encrypt an , your message turns into a series of letters, numbers, and symbols that is basically gibberish. 12 What if I don t have Microsoft Outlook? The preferred method for using the SecurenCrypt encryption feature is with Microsoft Outlook. However, if you do not have Microsoft Outlook, you can decrypt and view encrypted with the SE Reader Utility. SE Reader can be used with any version of SecurenCrypt, but will limit you to decrypting only. What if I don t get my in Microsoft Outlook? You have several choices if you want to receive encrypted through an provider other than the address associated with Microsoft Outlook. You can import your other so you receive it in Outlook, allowing you to take advantage of all the features of the Microsoft Outlook plug-in. You can also decrypt and view encrypted with the SE Reader Utility. SE Reader can be used with any version of SecurenCrypt but will limit you to decrypting only. How do I use the Reader Utility?
