2 Organising Institution Eötvös Loránd University is Hungary s biggest and oldest continuously acting University. Nowadays the University has eight faculties ranging from Law to Special Education. The student body is made up from 32,000 young people. ELTE has intensive scientific cooperation with the leading universities of Europe and the World. ELTE is the leading institution in the major of Hungarian as a foreign language, the teaching staff is highly qualified. The experience of our professors ensures the high standard of all courses. The intensive Hungarian language course Description The aim of the course is to introduce students into the world of Hungarian language and to acquire the necessary grammatical and lexical skills to survive everyday situations. (To be able to read Hungarian, introduce themselves, greet someone, ask for information, shop, etc) Our teachers mainly use the communicative approach in language teaching. We consider it our task to introduce the students into Hungarian culture, for this reason we arrange the so called Hungarian Studies series of lectures in the afternoon. Our language lessons based on our long term experience are divided into special sections according to the basic language skills, like conversation, grammar, reading, vocabulary, and phonetics. TOTAL NUMBER OF CLASSES 94 teaching hours (1 lecture is 45 minutes) HOURS IN CLASSROOM 60 teaching hours (1 lecture is 45 minutes) HOURS OF PRACTICE CONVERSATION/ LANGUAGE LABORATORY 30 teaching hours (1 lecture is 45 minutes) OTHER HUNGARIAN HISTORY AND CULTURAL COURSES 4 teaching hours (1 lecture is 60 minutes) Evaluation The students are evaluated continuously verbally and on paper as well. The course ends with a verbal and a written exam, in case of a successful exam student attending the course get 3 credits. Cultural Component During the time of the course in the afternoons the students may participate in English language lessons on Hungarian Culture, history, literature, music, architecture, history of science, and the ways of living together with other nations. Lectures are mostly held by the professors of the university, but depending on the topic other lecturers may be asked to do so as well. Also the students during these afternoon programmes may visit different museums, cultural institutions such as the National Museum, National Gallery, the House of Terror, the National Széchenyi Library, the Museum of Ethnography, the Parliament, the Museum of Arts, the Museum of Applied Arts, etc. Furthermore they may go for a trip to some of the culturally rich regions as Esztergom, the Balaton highlands, Gödöllö, Szentendre, or take a walk in the Buda Castle or Margit Island. They may get to know Hungarian folk music and dance, or even take part in the barn dance. Accommodation Dormitory The students would be accommodated in one of the dormitories of the University, The Kõrösi Csoma Sándor Dormitory. It is the biggest dormitory in Hungary with the capacity of 1293 person. Social life is very active in this dormitory, so the students have a lot of opportunities to choose from. 3 Information about Budapest Transport to Budapest Budapest has an international airport, Ferihegy Airport, located 20 kilometres from the city centre. The airport receives flights directly from all over the world. Low cost airlines fly to Ferihegy 1, which connects Budapest with several European cities, allowing a more economic way of travelling. You can find more information on the airport at 3 international railway stations await international trains, namely Keleti (Eastern) Railway Station, Nyugati (Western) Railway Station. More information available at The main international bus station is located at the Népliget. This station has excellent public transport links, and the city centre. Public transport in Budapest Budapest Transport Limited is responsible for public transport in the city. Budapest has a very dense and wellorganized web of transport. The company operates 224 bus-, 35 tramway-, 14 trolley bus-, 3 metro- and 5 suburban railway lines. There is a wide range of tickets and passes available, and students have the possibility to travel cheaper using their Student ID. The halls of the course is located in the city centre near Astoria. It can be reached with almost every mean of transport. It has a metro stop, and more than 6 buslines are halting near the campus buildings. This is one of the most central places in the city. 4 Reception of students Every student of the EILC course is entitled to participate in the mentor-system of the University. This provides informal help for the incoming students during the first days of arrival. Every incoming student will have a Hungarian mentor, who will help him/her. The mentor will pick the participant up at the airport / train station, and get him/her to the dormitory. During the first days the mentor and the student remain in touch. The mentor also provides help during the registration, buying a phone, opening a bank account, etc. Participants are advised to register in advance to have this opportunity.
