In April 20-22, 2012, we will celebrate the Sprint Pan American Championships in Rio de Janeiro, this being the most important Sprint Championships in our Continent. Rio de Janeiro and the Brazilian Canoe Confederation will host another VERY IMPORTANT EVENT, the: Classifier Training for Paracanoe (National level) You are kindly invited to bring up to 2 coaches and up to 2 medical personnel to attend this seminar. The inclusion of Paracanoeing on the Program of the Paralympics Games Rio de Janeiro 2016 is one more motivation for ALL COPAC affiliated National Federations of the Americas to send its staff. For the ones that did not began yet with the inclusion of paracanoeing on the activities of your National Federation, please take this as an excellent learning opportunity and join us. One of the keys of the success in sport the constant learning process through which we go on the benefit of our athletes. The International Canoe Federation (ICF) is supporting training initiatives which will provide athletes interested in competition access to trained classifiers within their federation. The ICF has established classification criteria which defines the minimum disability of a paddler permitted to compete in each of the designated event classes. At this session you will: 1. Learn the roles and responsibilities of the technical classifier and the medical classifier and how they work together 2. Become familiar with the equipment and space required for classification 3. Understand the forms required for submission by athletes/coaches and the review process

5 4. Be introduced to medical testing processes and participate in a practical component 5. Be introduced to technical evaluation and participate in a practical component To train as a medical classifier you are required to have a medical background (physician, physiotherapist, recreation therapist, occupational therapist). To train as a technical classifier you are required to possess extensive practical knowledge of paddling, such as a paddling coach, sport scientist, former paddler, physical educator or similarly qualified person.
