2 Igor Meijer/FISA Getty Images/iStockphoto Introduction Dear sporting friends, As President of the Rio 2016 Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, it is my pleasure to invite you to the 2015 World Rowing Junior Championships in Rio de Janeiro. This will be the first time Brazil has hosted this prestigious event and we are proud to have the opportunity to welcome athletes, coaches, the Federations and rowing enthusiasts to our city. Over five days in August 2015, about 600 young rowers, representing nearly 50 nations, will compete on the stunning Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, which is in the heart of our city, under the gaze of the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. The 2015 World Rowing Junior Championships will be one of the first of a series of test events for different sports that we will stage in Rio in the build-up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Test events are a vital part of an organising committee s preparations, allowing us to ensure our readiness and fine tune the venues that will host the competitions in However, we recognise that these events are very important in their own right and our aim is to deliver technically excellent competitions. An important commitment we have made is to help grow the Olympic Movement in South America, and this event will provide a fantastic stage to engage the local population with one of the most enduring Olympic sports. It will be a fantastic opportunity to familiarise many more people with rowing and motivate some to take up the sport. The transformative power of sport is a central theme of the Rio 2016 project, with a particular emphasis on inspiring young people, so hosting the World Rowing Junior Championships is perfectly aligned with our Games vision. As it has done in the past, the event will provide unforgettable experiences for thousands of young competitors, and will be a crucial stepping stone for some on their path to Olympic glory. 3 Getty Images/iStockphoto Rio de Janeiro The Marvellous City is famous around the world for its breath-taking natural beauty and the welcoming spirit of its people, who are known as Cariocas. Decorated with lush tropical rainforest, awe-inspiring mountains, golden beaches and lagoons, Rio de Janeiro has been enchanting visitors since the Portuguese arrived in From Sugarloaf Mountain to the Christ the Redeemer statue and the Maracanã stadium, Rio is home to some of the planet s best-known landmarks. It is also Brazil s cultural hub: the birthplace of samba and the home of Carnival the world s biggest party. The city boasts an array of museums, art galleries, theatres, live music venues, cinemas and shopping options, along with a plethora of fine restaurants. Sport is central to Carioca culture. On and alongside the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema and Flamengo, people are constantly playing volleyball, football, footvolley and beach tennis, as joggers, power-walkers, cyclists, skateboarders and roller-bladers cruise by. The more adventurous souls look upwards towards the mountains for rock climbing and hang-gliding, while surfers are always seeking the next wave. The city is experienced in staging major events and welcoming visitors from around the globe. Carnival and the New Year s Eve celebrations on Copacabana beach draw millions of revellers each year, while Rio recently hosted millions of pilgrims who came to participate in the Pope s visit. In June, the city played a lead role in the successful hosting of the FIFA Confederations Cup, which provided invaluable preparation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil World Rowing Junior Championships Rio de Janeiro Brazil

4 Rio 2016/Alex Ferro Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas Situated in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, buffered by the upmarket neighbourhoods of Ipanema, Leblon, Copacabana and Jardim Botânico, Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas is one of the city s most beautiful landmarks. Connected to the Atlantic Ocean by a narrow canal, the huge lagoon was originally inhabited by the Tupí Indians. It is framed by the lush vegetation and mountains of Floresta da Tijuca, the world s second largest urban forest, whose impressive peaks include the Pedra da Gávea and Corcovado. Atop of the latter stands the Christ the Redeemer statue, the quintessential symbol of Rio, which will watch over the 2015 World Rowing Junior Championships, and then the rowing and canoe sprint events at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Lagoa, as it is simply referred to by Cariocas, is a magnet for sports enthusiasts. The wide path that circles the water is loved by walkers, joggers, cyclists and skaters, and there are courts for basketball, tennis, volleyball and football. On the water you can see people wakeboarding, canoeing and using pedalos, but it is rowing that is most associated with the lagoon. It is the birthplace of the sport in Brazil and the major clubs of Flamengo, Botafogo and Vasco da Gama are all based around Lagoa, bringing a rich rowing history to the area. The famous football clubs of the same names grew out of the rowing clubs. Lagoa plays a lead role in the city s Christmas celebrations. Each year a giant Christmas tree is mounted on a floating platform in the centre of the lagoon, and the switchingon ceremony draws as audience of thousands. There are many good restaurants and bars that overlook Lagoa, while the recently constructed Lagoon centre brings together gastronomy, cinemas, live music and nightlife World Rowing Junior Championships Rio de Janeiro Brazil

5 2015 World Rowing Junior Championships Rio de Janeiro Brazil It s a marvellous setting, it s absolutely stunning. In our sport normally we compete outside the city we never get to compete in the heart of a city, but here in Rio we have got that chance. We will be very much in the middle of it, with the Jesus Christ statue looking over the rowers. It will be very, very special from a rower s point of view, and I m sure it will be special for the spectators too.
