1 2017 Canadian Age-Group World Championship Team Qualification Events and Qualifying Spots Sprint Triathlon (Draft-Legal) Swim 750meters/ Bike 20km/ Run 5km The Canadian Age-Group World Championship Team competing in Rotterdam, Netherlands in 2017, will consist of the top-performing age-group athletes in Canada who wish to proudly represent their country. They will participate in a unique team environment and celebrate their sport within the global multisport community. 1. Eligibility All athletes who represent Canada at Age-Group World Championships must: Be members in good standing with a Provincial Triathlon Association throughout the year. Be in good standing with Triathlon Canada throughout the year. Be a Canadian Citizen or Canadian Permanent Resident. Sign the current year s athlete agreement. 2. Age Categories The International Triathlon Union (ITU) age-group categories start at years and then progress in five year blocks (e.g ; 25 29). ITU age-group eligibility criteria are determined on an athlete s age on December 31st of the year of the World Championship event. Please note: The age-group qualifying events are different than all other age-group sprint selection events. IMPORTANT DISTINCTIONS The ITU Junior category is not the same as the age-group category. While both compete in a sprint distance, draft-legal event, they are two distinct categories and events, with separate selection policies. The Triathlon Canada High Performance department governs junior team selection, while Age-group selections are under Age-group Teams. Triathlon Canada allows athletes to move between the junior category and age-group Similarly, U23 and elite draft-legal team selection are governed by the Triathlon Canada High Performance department. Athletes racing in elite, U23 and Junior draft-legal events qualify through the high performance selection process. 3. Qualifying Spots The ITU Competition Rules stipulate that Triathlon Canada may nominate up to 20 males and 20 females in each age-group category at Triathlon World Championship events. 1

2 4. Selection Process The selection of Canadian Age-Group World Championship teams is designed to identify and select the topperforming age-group athletes at qualification events. There are three (3) stages within which selection priorities are identified. The first selection stage is for athletes that compete and earn a spot at a designated Qualification Event. Stage 2: Roll-down Qualification Should there be any spots still available after Stage 1, Stage 2 will commence based on the priority level of the event and age-group placing. If spots are still available after priority 1 events, roll-down to priority 2 events will commence and so on. If there is a tied placing in two separate same priority level events, the athlete with the closest percentage to the winner s time will be selected. Should there be any spots still available after Stage 1 and Stage 2 athletes are able to apply for open registration. Selection of athletes to the team will be determined upon receipt on fully completed registration documents (first come will be first selected). All Athletes are responsible for knowing in which Stage they qualified and the associated time-frame for application. Athletes will receive confirmation of their application as soon as possible following Selection Stages noted above. Triathlon Canada will announce the official age-group team by February Team Funding/Management The World Championship team is fully self-funded, including all the team planning, administration and logistics. Any team with over 35 participants will have on-the-ground Triathlon Canada designated Team Management support. Costs to be met by each team member include: a) Athlete services: i. Race entry fee (Up to $500 depending on location/race length) - This will be a pre-authorized hold until exact amount is determined. ii. Team management fee - non-refundable unless application is not accepted iii. Travel insurance (including personal accident insurance while training and racing overseas). Please note that this does not include bike insurance. b) Team uniform (race suit, team casual wear and accessories) ($300) c) Travel and accommodation (Host hotel(s) and travel dates to be identified by December 1 st ) provided that the LOC has released the Race Schedule d) Applicable Taxes as determined by each province ALL Fees will be refunded should your application be unaccepted for any reason. 2

3 6. Volunteer Assistance Triathlon Canada is highly appreciative of those that support the Age-Group World Championship Team using their professional expertise and qualifications. Upon announcing the Team, Triathlon Canada will seek volunteers to support the team in the following roles: Team Doctor Team Physiotherapist Team Massage Therapist Team Bike Mechanic Those that fulfill these above duties will have their team fees waved. The expectation of support will be clearly identified in the Team Canada Support Manual (to be developed) and those responsibilities communicated to all team members. 3

Stage 2: Roll-down Qualification Up to 5 entries: Canada Summer Games Test Event in Winnipeg MN for the top 10 finishers Up to 15 entries: Athletes in the top 20 of the 2016 Canadian Junior Series Ranking at the end of the season. Spots will be allocated based on ranking. Up to 20 entries: You must have completed at least one race of an equal or greater distance in the event with which you wish to compete in the previous calendar year. All athletes age years must also be draft legal certified by their PSO. If you race in a Triathlon Canada Series Race, or if you do NOT have a qualification race in your province, there will be no additional charge for Open Registration. Should you not race in a Triathlon Canada Series race of equal or greater distance an additional fee of $150 will be charged. 4
