4 ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING PROGRAM ADMISSION POLICY STATEMENT Any applicant to the Southeastern Illinois College Associate Degree Nursing Program must follow the Admission Procedure approved for the Southeastern Illinois College Associate Degree Nursing Program. (This procedure includes the admission procedure for Southeastern Illinois College.) ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAM IS NON-DISCRIMINATORY CONCERNING RACE, CREED, RELIGION, GENDER, NATIONAL ORIGIN, OR DISABLING CONDITION WITHIN THE ABILITY TO CARRY OUT PERFORMANCE TO THE STANDARDS OF THE PROFESSION. Preference will be given to in district residents of Southeastern Illinois college District #533. Proof of residency is required at the time of application and must be submitted no later than the deadline date for application to the program. Any change in residency after the application deadline will not result in a change in the acceptance list for that year. An out-of-district student who establishes residency after the application deadline may reapply the following year as a resident of District #533. Special Counties: See College Handbook. The information in this admission criteria packet therefore is the correct guidelines to follow for the Southeastern Illinois College Nursing Program requirements for entrance.
5 ACCEPTANCE REQUIREMENTS Application files will be evaluated and acceptance will be by rank order using the following criteria for acceptance. 1. Required 58.7 on the pre-entrance exam: The TEAS, Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI.) Applicants will be ranked, according to the TEAS V score. The top 30 will be accepted in each fall semester s traditional program and the top 10 will be accepted into the every other even year fall semester hybrid-online program. 2. Completion of ALL required Phase I and Phase II courses with a grade of C or better. *Grade Point Average will be calculated only for Phase I and Phase II courses required for the ADN program, if there is a tie on the TEAS score. 3. In the event that these calculations are tied an overall Grade Point Average will be calculated and used for entrance to the Nursing Program. 4. ALL Phase I and Phase II course grades must be completed prior to start of program with a grade of C or better. A. Required Phase I and Phase II Courses: 1. BIOL 261 and BIOL 262 (Anatomy and Physiology I & II) 2. Communications 121 or English A 3 credit hour transferable elective for the ADN program 4. BIOL 242 (Microbiology) (This course has a pre-requisite of a C or better in high school chemistry sequence or CHEM 123.) 5. Health 219-Health Professions Advanced Student Skills 6. CPR (131 or 133) Healthcare Provider Certification. Will accept current Healthcare Provider Certification from AHA instructor. Card must be current through program ending date. Note: Online ADN program requires that the student has completed at least one 2 credit hour online course with a B or better prior to admission. 5. Submit proof of having completed an approved Practical Nursing Program for consideration into an ADN program. Final acceptance to the program requires that all of the above criteria be met. Failure to meet any of the requirements will make the applicant ineligible for enrollment in the program. It is the student s responsibility to ensure that all requirements have been met.
6 SOUTHEASTERN ILLINOIS COLLEGE ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING PROGRAM ADMISSION PROCEDURE 1. Submit an application for admission to SIC. (This is not necessary if you are a continuing student.) The application may be completed electronically at Southeastern s website Provide proof of graduation from an accredited high school or submit proof of having successfully completed the GED exam. 3. Submit official transcripts from all high schools (or official GED exam scores) and postsecondary institution attended. 4. Be a graduate of an approved Practical Nursing program with a completion date prior to the start of ADN classes. Transcripts will provide proof of completion of the Practical Nursing Program. 5. Attend a scheduled advisement meeting regarding the ADN program. 6. Submit an application for the Associate Degree Nursing Program, by the application deadline, to the Admissions Coordinator. The deadline date for the traditional and online programs is March 31 for completion of the application process, including application, advisement, and TEAS V testing. The applicant s file must be complete by the end of the Summer 2013 Semester to be considered for acceptance to the Fall class. 7. Register to take the TEAS V at SIC. Exam dates are by appointment, call , ext Prior to taking the TEAS V test make payment to the SIC Business Office of $45 for TEAS testing fee. Make check or money order payable to Southeastern Illinois College. No refunds. Provide receipt as proof of payment on your scheduled test date. 8. Take the standardized pre-nursing TEAS V examination given at Southeastern. These scores will be used to rank admission to the program. Applicants must score 58.7%. Applicants may take the exam a maximum of twice in one academic year to improve their scores, if they so choose. The highest TEAS score will be used for ranking. (The exam should be taken in time for scores to be received by the college prior to the deadlines of the program to which the student is applying.) Students who are reapplying to the program must retake the TEAS exam for continuation. If the student is transferring a TEAS V score taken at another college, the student is responsible for making arrangements with ATI for the transfer, as well as for all costs incurred with the transfer. 9. Applicant files will be evaluated and a rank ordering of those with complete files will be done on or after the supporting documentation deadline. Letters of acceptance will be sent to applicants from the Director of Nursing. Complete file means that the SIC application AND the application to the ADN Program are present. Also, the transcripts, test scores, documentation of advisement meeting attendance, and proof of successful completion of General Education requirements must be present. 10. Within the first seven (7) days of class, the student must provide the Nursing and Allied Health Department with: a. Documentation of specific health screening and immunizations as required by the Clinical agencies b. Proof of current personal health insurance coverage or signed waiver
7 HEALTH SCREENINGS/IMMUNIZATIONS Once accepted, the candidate must successfully complete the following steps for final acceptance into the program: 1. Demonstrate evidence of a completed physical examination with health care provider statement indicating the applicant is physically and mentally able to perform the duties required in a nursing program. 2. Immunizations/Proof of Immunizations If the physical examination indicates that the candidate cannot perform the duties required in a nursing program, the student will not be allowed to participate in the program. TRANSFER STUDENTS: An SIC counselor will evaluate the general education courses needed for transfer and determine if the course content is comparable and the applicant s grade is satisfactory for transfer. Acceptance would be based on available space in the program. All phase 3 nursing courses must be taken at Southeastern Illinois College.
