4 About Clark College Founded in 1933, Clark College is one of the oldest and most highly regarded two-year colleges in the state of Washington. The 101-acre main campus is home to 25 buildings dedicated to science, technology, business, the humanities and fine arts. Students who intend to transfer to four-year colleges and universities are offered university-level courses for their first two years of study. Their coursework transfers readily to top-ranked schools across the nation. 9 Intensive English Language Program Improve your English at the Clark College IELP! This program will help you to develop the English skills needed to enter to achieve your academic, professional or personal goals. New IELP students take placement tests during orientation to determine their level of English and Math. Students register for classes during orientation. Orientation is required for all new international students. 12 Shuqing (Suri) Li, Yangzhou, China Suri chose to attend Clark College because her friend recommended it. She is a Business major who loves hanging out with friends and shopping when she isn t at school. She had trouble with English and making new friends when she first arrived, but she soon discovered the International Student Lounge. After that, English and friendship came easily. Her advice to new students? Don t be shy!

13 Juan Luis Cornejo Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico Juan is a Journalism major, and he has already won awards for his writing in the Clark College newspaper. This is especially impressive because he wrote in his second language, English. His favorite place at Clark is the bookstore, but he goes to the International Student Lounge to meet with friends. Juan came to Clark to get a good start on his four-year degree. His advice to new students? Always try your best. You are as important as any other student on campus.

14 Rintaro Kobayashi, Tokyo, Japan Rintaro plans to major in Tourism. He says that English is his biggest challenge; but he makes friends easily and finds help with the language from his friends in the International Student Lounge. He says his favorite place on campus is the library, and he enjoys playing soccer and singing in his free time. Rin s advice to new students is to be active and be sociable!

15 Estefanía Rodriguez, Valencia, Venezuela Estefanía chose Clark College after searching the internet. I saw the pictures and I thought it was beautiful. She says her biggest challenge is to make her parents proud, and they likely are very proud. Estefanía is a Foreign Language major, and she works as a Spanish tutor in the Language Lab on campus. She loves her job and meeting new people. She also enjoys venturing into the city of Portland and going dancing whenever she can. Her advice? Don t be shy! Everybody is new and they are eager to make new friends.

18 Campus & Community life Part of experiencing a new culture is getting involved. Clark College has opportunities for every student to participate in American college life. There are several recreational and collegiate sports teams, a modern fitness center, drama productions, music groups and more than 50 college clubs and organizations. The International Club meets each week to share language and culture through service projects, excursions and social gatherings. Clark College is at the center of the 692-acre Vancouver Central Park. The college boasts a beautiful campus with well designed and carefully maintained landscaping, including a Japanese Garden. The 100 cherry trees that line the campus walkways are celebrated by students and the community each spring when the blossoms emerge.
