Since 1979, we have been offering open enrollment and customized group programs to students from around the world. Today we serve nearly 4,000 international students per year at our main campus, downtown Seattle and Bothell locations. We feature highly qualified instructors who are experienced English language professionals, and we offer small classes and a variety of programs to meet your needs. Our high-quality instructional program will help prepare you for studies at an American college or university and assist you in reaching your personal or career goals. The CIEP, founded in 1977, is one of the largest English language programs in the United States, with about 450 students attending each quarter. Students from all over the world enjoy our scenic campus in one of the cleanest, most attractive cities in the country. Enroll in this program and you will: Improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills Learn how to raise your TOEFL or IELTS scores Increase your readiness for American university study Once you begin the CIEP, you can also apply for conditional admission to UW Bothell, UW Tacoma, Washington State University and other colleges in the Pacific Northwest. The CIEP is designed for beginning to advanced students of English who want to improve their English skills for their education or career. This program meets the requirements for an F-1 student visa. To enroll in this program, you must: Be at least 18 years of age or have completed high school Have a basic knowledge of English. You should be able to spell basic vocabulary words in English, introduce yourself and understand classroom instructions, and write simple sentences using the verb to be. New students will take a placement test. This test will place you into a level ranging from 1 (beginning) to 5 (advanced). If your score is lower than Level 1, you cannot study in the CIEP. 2

5 Academic Preparation Courses The CIEP has a Lower Division and Upper Division. The Lower Division is for beginning to intermediate students (Levels 1 4). The Upper Division is for advanced students (Level 5). Students must successfully complete the core courses in the Lower Division or score well enough on the placement test to qualify for Level 5 to take Upper Division courses. 6 Academic Preparation Conditional Admission While studying in the Campus Intensive English Program (CIEP), you may apply for conditional admission to select universities in Washington state. Our academic advisor will help you with the application process. If you meet the university core admission requirements, you may be granted conditional admission without submitting a TOEFL, IELTS or other standardized test score. Then, once you complete the CIEP academic English requirements, you may begin your undergraduate studies. University of Washington Bothell UW Bothell, founded in 1990, boasts a 128-acre campus with more than 2,200 students. UW Bothell offers 24 undergraduate programs and 10 post-baccalaureate and graduate areas of study. University of Washington Tacoma UW Tacoma was also founded in 1990 and has about 2,900 students in eight academic programs. The school s 46-acre campus is located on the southern edge of downtown Tacoma. Central Washington University Central Washington University s main campus is located in Ellensburg, Washington, two hours east of Seattle. CWU has an enrollment of more than 10,000 and has four colleges, which offer more than 150 different majors and 38 graduate programs across 24 departments. Washington State University Washington s original land-grant university, Washington State University, was founded in 1890 in Pullman, Washington. WSU has more than 26,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students and offers 90 majors for undergraduates, 67 master s degree programs, 46 doctoral degree programs and two professional degree programs. 4

7 Academic Preparation Accelerated Intensive English Program (A-IEP) Finish your UW English proficiency requirement in two academic quarters instead of three on the UW Bothell campus with the Accelerated Intensive English Program (A-IEP). A-IEP is a highly concentrated two-quarter English program offered jointly by the University of Washington Bothell and UW International & English Language Programs. All classes are held on the UW Bothell campus, which is located about 20 minutes north of the main Seattle campus. Classes meet for 4 5 hours per day, Monday through Friday. The A-IEP is for advanced students of English who intend to enroll at the UW Bothell and who want an accelerated English program. This program meets the requirements for an F-1 student visa. This four-week program focuses on preparing you for the challenge of undergraduate studies at an American college or university. 9 Academic Preparation Advanced Academic Preparation Skills (AAPS) Join us during summer quarter for Advanced Academic Preparation Skills (AAPS), a special four-week program designed to help you meet the challenges of studying in U.S. graduate programs in a wide variety of fields. Enroll in this program and you will: Develop the advanced English language and presentation skills needed for top academic performance Increase your awareness of U.S. academic culture and expectations AAPS is designed for high-intermediate and advanced non-native English speakers who are preparing for graduate study at an American college or university. Students from all fields of study are encouraged to apply. This program meets the requirements for an F-1 student visa. This four-quarter program will get you ready for college in the United States. UPP will help you improve your English language skills and study skills while you earn academic credit. You ll also receive valuable assistance with the college application process. 11 BUSINESS CERTIFICATES If you are an international professional or international student interested in learning more about business concepts and skills, the University of Washington offers a variety of programs for you. International & English Language Programs features a number of certificate programs that combine the study of business principles and practices with expert English language instruction. Each of these programs consists of an intensive 10-week session during which you will attend class most weekdays. All classes are held at the UW s downtown Seattle location. Note: If you also want to take an English skills course, you should do so before beginning one of our business certificate programs. The chart below shows a possible sequence of international business programs that many students find helpful, depending on their individual level of English proficiency. After completing one or more of our international business certificate programs, students may also choose to take the optional Business English Internship Course (BEIC), which places them in an American workplace. Chia-Fen, Taiwan Intensive Business English Program (IBEP) Improve your business English by studying in Seattle s commercial core with the Intensive Business English Program (IBEP). This certificate program, held at the downtown Seattle location of the University of Washington, will teach you the language of business and help you be more successful in your career. Enroll in this program and you will: Improve your fluency and pronunciation in business situations social interactions, transactions and negotiations, meetings, telephone conversations and presentations Learn about business terminology and the American business environment Develop your written business communication skills (letters, reports, s) IBEP is part of the UW s international business certificate sequence, and many students take it before moving on to more advanced certificate courses such as Business for International Professionals (BUSIP), Fundamentals of Project Management (FPM) or Marketing for International Professionals (MIP). This program is designed for people who need English language skills for their jobs or need better language skills to interact in an English-speaking community. You do not need a business background to participate in this program, but you must meet certain English proficiency requirements. This program meets the requirements for an F-1 student visa. 14 Business Certificates To me, FPM class was an integration of real cases to implement the process of project management taught by knowledgeable employees who shared the gist of their work experience with the class. I highly recommend [the] FPM certificate for students who look forward to working in any managerial position in the future or any position that handles projects. A little background about business is quite helpful to understand the integration of the class; however, FPM teachers do a good job explaining the concepts from the scratch. Enroll in this program and you will: Improve your English vocabulary as well as your listening, speaking and presentation skills Practice your English in real-life situations Learn American expressions and idioms Interact with students from all over the world Who Should Register Language & Culture STEP is open to beginning to advanced students of English. Beginners must have a basic knowledge of English. STEP students are not eligible for an F-1 student visa. To enroll in this program, you must: Be at least 18 years old and have completed high school Have a basic knowledge of English. 19 Language & Culture Orientation to Academic Skills Short Term English Program (STEP) Orientation to Academic Skills Short Term English Program (STEP) is a three-week program designed to expose you to college-level study skills and practices. Orientation to Academic Skills STEP is offered during Session 4 of the Short Term English Program (STEP). In the classroom, you will practice English and learn about American academic expectations as you prepare for the challenges of your university program. Enroll in this program and you will: Improve your speaking and listening skills Develop vocabulary-building tools and reading strategies Practice your academic writing Increase your knowledge of American education policies and expectations Interact with students from all over the world* *Recent STEP sessions have included students from Austria, Brazil, Burma, Canada, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand and the Ukraine. Outside of class, you will have the opportunity to explore the campus area on field trips with your classmates and other UW students. Students joining Orientation to Academic Skills STEP are expected to have a higher-than-average English language skill level. Students who do not have high enough test scores or proof of equivalency should register for the Language & Culture STEP. STEP students are not eligible for an F-1 student visa. 20 PROGRAM for TEACHERS International Teaching English as a Foreign Language (I-TEFL) Certificate Prepare to teach English as a foreign language. Deepen your understanding of language acquisition theory, explore the latest research on teaching methods and learn to manage and organize your classroom and your classroom activities. You will gain the skills and knowledge needed to confidently teach English as a foreign language. This program is for current English language teachers from any country or for native and non-native English speakers who want to teach English as a foreign language at home or abroad. This program meets the requirements for an F-1 student visa. This program offers international students a high-quality academic study abroad experience, with a focus on international economies and global sustainability. ISAYA prepares tomorrow s leaders with the knowledge of global issues that they need today. ISAYA students take a personalized mix of international studies and English language courses. Students will be placed in either the Cascade Division (advanced English proficiency) or the Olympic Division (intermediate English proficiency), based on their test scores. 23 GENERAL INFORMATION ADMISSIONS For all of our programs, applicants must be at least 18 years old and/or have completed high school. Some programs require standardized test scores as proof of English language proficiency. For individual program requirements, please visit our website. Our programs fill up quickly, so we advise you to apply early. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note: Admission to our programs does not constitute admission to the University of Washington. VISAS Once you have been accepted into a program, we will provide you with a Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20). Most of our programs require an F-1 student visa. For questions about F-1 student visas, please contact our Student Services and Immigration advisors at aid@pce.uw.edu or TUITION & FEES In addition to classroom instruction, tuition and fees include most student services normally available to nonmatriculated students, such as academic counseling and use of some campus facilities.
