2 VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Around the Home Junior Volunteers Snag a Sensational Summer at Montefiore! By Morgan LaRue, Cadkin Youth Leadership intern As summer comes to an end, we give thanks to the over 159 new and returning junior volunteers who graciously focused their time and efforts to help make Montefiore and The Weils a little bit brighter this summer. One simple gesture at a time folding warm laundry, stocking chips and pop at the Posh Nosh or punching perfectly-aligned holes in office documents the juniors added personal touches to all areas of the organization and found many treasures of their own in the process. I enjoyed the people in general and of course, the residents, says Ryan Wexler, a student at Mayfield Middle School. Even when the weather failed to cooperate at key summer events, (the dedication of the new Entrance Gardens, the Olympic-themed employee appreciation picnic and some of the residents courtyard picnics), the junior volunteers dutifully welcomed attendees by serving delectable eats, along with a ray of sunshine that no weather report could discourage. Regardless of the rainfall, their signature optimism shone through. What made my time at Montefiore so great is knowing that I can help in some way by serving food to a resident at the Posh Nosh or doing office work. I know a little counts a lot, says Jacob Enders of Kenston High School. Adds Brandon Rock, a student at Solon High School, I m so appreciative of the chance to work with the residents and get to know them, talk to them, help them and make them smile. On Thursday, July 12, junior volunteers participated in the 7th annual Montefiore Idol talent show (see photo on page 9) earning rave reviews while performing for residents and staff. In the end, 14-year old Jacob Sherman from Highland Heights, a skilled pianist, became the worthy winner. Montefiore served many enrichment purposes for its young volunteers this summer. In June, high school students from SAY (Social Advocates for Youth) took a field trip to Montefiore and assisted with tasks on every floor of the building. In addition, The Camp STEP Boys Choir, under the leadership of Rabbi Chaim Ellis, made 2 MONTEFIORE FAMILY NEWSLETTER Junior Volunteer of the Year Award winners! Zach Walton, 18, is the son of Ellen Spielman and Michael Walton of Orange. Tyler Barr, 16, is the son of Kelly and David Barr of Chagrin Falls. its 6th appearance for a Summer Bein HaMetzarim Concert. Over 40 young boys, in bow ties and formal attire, sang an uplifting collection of songs to the residents. (See photos on page 9). Recognition, appreciation, and even some tears overflowed at the annual Junior Volunteer Recognition on Thursday, August 16, Sponsored by The Fannie and Milly Cadkin Endowment Fund and the Volunteer Appreciation Fund of The Montefiore Foundation, this superhero-themed event honored juniors for their extraordinary accomplishments both measured (nearly 3500 collective hours of service) and immeasurable. Montefiore Junior Volunteer of the Year, Zach Walton, a recent graduate of University School, reflected on how much he learned since coming to Montefiore at the age of 12. A fixture over the past six years during the school year and summer alike, Zach has been instrumental in making events such as the Auxiliary Ice Cream Social and holiday meals for Rosh Hashanah and Passover even more successful. Sixteen-year old Tyler Barr is no stranger at The Weils. The residents there have watched Tyler grow into a compassionate young man. Along with his family, he has been volunteering at the weekly Bingo game since 2010, accumulating more than 145 hours of community service. Tyler also tutors residents on the computer and has recently begun to play games with the memory care residents. STNA (State Tested Nursing Assistant) Luncheon. DONATE NOW GO TO MONTEFIORECARE.ORG MESSAGE FROM RABBI JOEL CHAZIN HEROISM: IT STILL EXISTS As we approach the High Holidays, we might wonder: what could we possibly learn? What could we possibly hear that is new? A good question, but then again: rising to our full capacity as human beings is always something to consider and a recent book published by Yad Vashem in Jerusalem offers us an abundance of heroes who risked their lives to save others. Here is one example of a man who stood up against his whole village in order to save a family of nine Jews. A survivor tells this story. Her uncle gathered up his family in Bessarabia (now Moldova) at the outbreak of the war, in order to reach the safety of the Soviet border several days journey by horse and wagon. After a few days, exhausted, they stopped at a farm house hoping for rest. But they were soon accosted by a few strongly built men with murder in their eyes who asked about their belongings and their money and then left. Realizing that even stopping here was not safe, they stepped outside only to find the whole village assembled outside the house facing them. They begged for help in reaching the Soviet border. But none would budge. Suddenly, a youngish looking man stepped forward and said, I will take you! The others tried to shut him up, even letting him know what he could expect from them later on. He stood his ground, shouting, You want to kill them. I will not allow it! The surviving daughter recounts: I remember that night as if it was yesterday: a full moon, clear skies, a warm and beautiful night. The man took us out of the danger zone, bid us farewell and left. My uncle and father tried to pay this honest and dear man, but he categorically refused. As Rosh Hashanah approaches, let us turn to heroes, those who rose mightily to the occasion and see what we might learn and gain for ourselves. May you and your loved ones be inscribed in the Book of Life for a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year. This uniquely designed, secure and homelike environment will serve individuals with early- to midstage dementia who need assisted living and memory care support. DONATE NOW GO TO MONTEFIORECARE.ORG KIM S KORNER by Kim Cole, Foundation Development Officer As the Montefiore Foundation s Development Officer, I have the opportunity to work on diverse and myriad projects all with the common goal of collaborating with current and potential donors to support the crucial work of Montefiore and The Weils. I am excited to let you know about a few new (and not so new) fundraising initiatives of the Foundation. Earlier this spring we launched a newlyupdated and user-friendly online giving form, allowing donors to make a gift to the annual fund, in honor or in memory of someone, or to any of our 200+ funds at the click of (a few) buttons. Visit montefiorecare.org and click on Giving Opportunities. As of July 1, donors to our Annual Fund are able to target their gift to the areas of greatest need (unrestricted) or to one of six programmatic priorities. Although unrestricted dollars allow us the greatest flexibility, we recognize that some donors prefer to focus their gift on areas which are nearest to their hearts. We hope you will join us as a donor to this year s annual campaign. Philanthropy is a wonderful and timehonored way to recognize someone for doing a job well, brightening your day, or making a difference in your life. Celebrate someone special in your life by making a tribute gift to say a very special thank you, wish a happy birthday, or extend condolences. As always, you can give online (see note above) or call to make a gift over the phone. You can also download a printable donation form on the Foundation s section of montefiorecare.org. Of course, if you would like to learn more about giving opportunities at Montefiore or The Weils, contact me directly at or kcole@montefiorecare.org. Lauren Rock, Montefiore president and CEO explained, Through strategic planning and our vision to fill a much-needed service to the entire community, it became more apparent as our program was growing, that the patients and families we serve could be much better supported in a new and expanded space on our Beachwood campus. We are so grateful to the Maltz family for their continuing support and generosity to Montefiore. There will be an indoor garden and living room which overlooks an outdoor healing garden both with soothing water features. Patient rooms will be furnished in warm, calming colors. Art, music, massage and Reiki therapies will take place in the wellness space and a consultation room will double as an overnight option for family along with a private dining area and a meditation/quiet room available 24/7. For more information call The Montefiore Foundation office at Songs of a Summer s Night Generous donors Martin and Glenda Weisblatt with Mary Beth Ions at a recent summer violin concert. 11 Recipes of Love Raise Support & Awareness Lilly Rothschild has the best recipe for making a mitzvah. By mixing love with tikkun olam, she is developing very special support for Montefiore and the Alzheimer s Association. A seventh grader at Gross Schechter Day School, Lilly has designed a mitzvah project for her upcoming Bat Mitzvah to honor the memory of her beloved grandfather, Bill Timbers. He was a loving and funny man who would make you feel so special, and he would never want anyone to suffer the way he did, says Lilly. As a result of her special bond with her grandfather, Lilly is raising money to support Montefiore s Assisted Living Memory Care Pavilion and the Alzheimer s Association. Her idea to plan several bake sales seemed logical cookies make you happy, so what a great way to raise money while making people happy. All the sweets were prepared by Lilly and her mom, Debbie Rothschild. Trays of brownies, blueberry cobbler and dozens of cookies were sold, raising $370 in just a few hours. In addition to the bake sales, a letter describing Lilly s project was mailed to family and friends. Thus far, $1500 has been raised for Montefiore and $1200 for the Alzheimer s Association. By Diane Weiner, volunteer manager $@# The letter drew responses from many people responding with gifts and meaningful stories about her grandfather. The most rewarding part of the mitzvah project was Lilly s realization that she can make a difference in the lives of other people. Knowing that other people are supporting her cause and benefiting from her efforts gives her hope that there will be a cure for Alzheimer s and that she will be able to help provide comfort for future memory care residents at Montefiore. To help support Lilly Rothschild s efforts to raise money for Montefiore s Assisted Living Memory Care Pavilion, please contact Beverly Gans at or bgans@montefiorecare.org. Lilly Rothschild is all smiles after a recent bake sale at Montefiore. Join Team Montefiore for the Annual Alzheimer s Memory Walk! Alzheimer s disease is the seventhleading cause of death in the United States today. We as a team can do something about it and get moving! Montefiore will be participating in the 2012 Alzheimer s Association Walk to End Alzheimer s, the nation s largest Where: Tower City Center, Cleveland, OH When: Sunday, October 7, a.m. Length: 3 mile route and 1 mile short cut event to raise awareness and funds to fight Alzheimer s disease. The Alzheimer s Association is the largest voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research, and the funds we raise will go directly toward supporting their efforts. If interested in walking, please contact Kristen Morelli, memory care program manager at or kmorelli@montefiorecare.org. DONATE NOW GO TO MONTEFIORECARE.ORG Garden Dedication Ceremony On Thursday, July 19, a garden dedication ceremony was held to unveil the new entrance gardens at Montefiore. The entrance gardens are a gift from an anonymous donor. The Garden of Aging There is a beauty in aging It is much like a garden As the seasons change so does our soul The beauty of life is in the changes And the changes make us whole We bloom with spring and summer And find solace in autumn and winter The seeds that are planted will bloom again And create a new garden for us to tend, much like our soul. Sarah Markowitz, 2012 Marketing Intern New gardens surrounding the Stella Kleinman Rehab Gym were a gift from an anonymous donor. The flower garden surrounding The Barkley/Davis Menorah was a gift from the Aileen and Arthur Arnson Garden Fund. Of blessed memory The Daus Garden, located on the outside of Montefiore s Maltz Auditorium, is named in memory of Jean Daus, a Montefiore Board member. FALL
