Wrk Requirements: Examples f an apprved wrk setting: It hlds a certificate f apprval r perating certificate t prvide substance abuse r alchlism services frm OASAS issued pursuant t Articles 19, 23, 31 r 32 f the Mental Hygiene Law r a similar license r apprval frm anther state s alchlism r substance abuse authrity fr the state in which the agency, facility r prgram is lcated (a cpy f the license/certificate frm OASAS must be submitted. Fr anther state, a cpy f the certificate f apprval, perating certificate r similar license r apprval frm that state s alchlism and substance abuse authrity must be submitted) It is accredited by the Cmmissin n Accreditatin f Rehabilitatin Facilities (CARF), specifically fr the prvisin f alchlism and/r substance abuse treatment services (evidence f CARF accreditatin fr prvisin f alchlism and/r substance abuse treatment services must be submitted) It is accredited by the Jint Cmmissin n Accreditatin f Health Care Organizatins (JCAHO) fr the prvisin f alchlism and/r substance abuse services (evidence f JCAHO accreditatin fr the prvisin f alchlism and/r substance abuse services must be submitted) It is rganized and perated by the Federal gvernment, t include the Indian Health Service and Veterans Administratin, as a prgram f alchlism and/r substance abuse treatment which is cnsistent with OASAS standards It is a schl r cmmunity-based preventin/interventin prgram which is designated fr the prvisin f the full range f chemical dependence cunseling services (a cpy f the license/certificate frm OASAS must be submitted) It is a prgram that includes alchlism and/r substance abuse treatment deemed t be cnsistent with OASAS standards and is licensed and/r perated by any ther New Yrk State agency (a cpy f the certificate f apprval, perating certificate r similar license r apprval frm the state agency must be submitted) It is an agency r prgram nt subject t licensure by OASAS but which has been deemed by OASAS t prvide services which cnfrm t OASAS standards fr alchlism and/r substance abuse treatment dcumentatin which cnfirms exemptin frm OASAS licensing and verifies OASAS

A Bachelr s Degree in an apprved human services field frm an accredited cllege r institutin may be substituted fr 2000 hurs f wrk experience. A maximum f 2000 hurs f full-time equivalent vluntary r ther nn-paid wrk experience (including a frmal internship r frmal field placement) which ccurred within five years prir t submissin f the applicatin may als be claimed, prviding it invlved apprpriately supervised direct patient services in an apprved wrk setting. This includes the medical, physical and pharmaclgical aspects f addictin and addictin cunseling, Vcatinal & Educatinal Training, HIV/AIDS and ther Sexually Transmitted Infectins, Relapse Preventin, Diversity f Treatment Appraches and the rle 12 Step and Human Grwth and Develpment. Curses: Physical Pharmaclgical Aspects (46 hrs); HIV/AIDS Cmmunicable & Sexually Transmitted Infectins (12 hrs); Diversity f Treatment Appraches (30 hrs); Self Help/12 Step (9 hrs); Human Grwth & Develpment (6 hrs), Vcatinal and Educatinal Training (18 hrs) and Relapse Preventin (14 hrs). 36 sessins Part B: Part B will fcus n all types f treatment settings frm inpatient medically supervised detx and crisis centers, t utpatient prgrams and shrt and lng-term residential prgrams. Part B will als cver cultural cmpetency issues and hw culture, cultural awareness and sensitivity plays an imprtant rle in bth effective cunseling and client recvery. They include MD's, Psychiatrists and Psychlgists, RN's, Nurse Practitiners, Physician's Assistants, Certified Scial Wrkers, Certified Rehabilitatin Cunselrs, Relapse Preventin Specialists, CASACs and CPPs. Curse Scheduling Mdules may be taken ne at a time r tw per semester s cmpletin f all required curse hurs can be accmplished ver ne-year r spread ver fur years. Mdules I and II are ffered in the Fall semester and may be taken tgether r in either sequence. Mdules III and IV are ffered in the Spring semester and may be taken tgether r in either sequence. The CASAC is intended fr individuals wh prvide alchlism and substance abuse COUNSELING services in apprved wrk settings. The CPP and CPS are intended fr individuals wh prvide alchl and substance abuse PREVENTION services. Can I hld bth credentials? Yes, but nly wrk experience hurs devted t alchlism and substance abuse cunseling (i.e., Diagnstic Assessment; Evaluatin; Interventin; Referral; and Alchlism and/r Substance Abuse Cunseling in bth Individual and Grup Settings) will be cnsidered tward satisfying the CASAC requirements. Only wrk experience hurs devted t alchl and substance abuse preventin services (i.e., Planning and Evaluatin; Educatin and Skill Develpment; Cmmunity Organizatin; Public and Organizatinal Plicy; and Prfessinal Grwth and Respnsibility) will be cnsidered tward satisfying the CPP/CPS requirements. Cnvictin f a crime is nt, in and f itself, a ban t becming credentialed. Hwever, the criminal ffense r ffenses fr which yu have been previusly cnvicted may affect yur fitness r ability t perfrm ne r mre duties r respnsibilities related t the credential. As part f the Applicatin prcess, yu will be required t prvide infrmatin relative t the cnvictin t be cnsidered as part f the review f yur applicatin. Where d I get the educatin and training t becme credentialed? OASAS will cnsider educatin and training btained thrugh accredited clleges r universities; gvernmental agencies; prfessinal rganizatins; training institutes; r in-service training prgrams. OASAS s Training Calendar includes OASAS training, as well as thse prviders and curses, which have been reviewed and apprved by OASAS as acceptable t satisfy initial and/r renewal credentialing requirements fr the CASAC, CPP and CPS. Hw lng is my credential gd fr? Each credential is valid fr a perid f three years and will expire n yur date f birth. Review CASAC AND CPP/CPS renewal infrmatin fr additinal details. Hw d I apply fr a CASAC trainee certificate? CASAC Trainee certificates are btained thrugh the CASAC initial credentialing applicatin prcess. OASAS s Credentialing Unit will review yur CASAC Applicatin t determine whether yu have satisfied the requirements t sit fr the CASAC written examinatin. If during this review prcess, it is determined that yu have satisfied the requirements assciated with CASAC Trainee certificatin, yu will be issued a certificate.

10 Des a CASAC Trainee certificate mean that I m a Qualified Health Prfessinal? N! The CASAC Trainee certificate serves as dcumentatin that yu are wrking tward becming a CASAC. In additin, CASAC Trainees may be cunted tward the Qualified Health Prfessinal staffing requirement in specific OASAS-certified chemical dependence treatment prgrams nly. The CASAC Trainee certificatin will nt authrize yu t be cnsidered a Qualified Health Prfessinal fr any purpse ther than that stated abve. Hw much des it cst t take the CASAC written examinatin? The examinatin fee is $200 (this includes ne written examinatin and ne CPM ral examinatin). Hw much des it cst t take the Preventin written examinatin? The examinatin fee is $215. Are there any study resurces available t help me n the examinatins? There are a number f study materials available fr bth the CASAC and Preventin examinatins. Study guides fr the Preventin examinatin can be purchased thrugh the ICRC/AODA by calling (703) Hw lng will it be befre I get the results frm my examinatin? Yu will receive the results frm yur examinatin within six weeks after the date f the examinatin. Hw lng will it befre I m scheduled fr my CPM ral examinatin? Yu will be scheduled fr yur CPM ral examinatin apprximately three mnths after yu are ntified that yu have passed the CASAC written examinatin. Will OASAS accept my persnal check? N. All fees must be made payable t NYS OASAS in the frm f a certified check r mney rder. Persnal checks will nt be accepted and will be returned. This will nly delay yur applicatin prcess r ther paperwrk. Hw will I knw when it s time t renew my credential? What happens if my credential expires? Once yur credential has expired, yu may nt identify yurself as a credentialed cunselr r credentialed preventin practitiner. If fewer than tw years have elapsed since the expiratin date f yur credential, yu may submit a written request t OASAS t reapply fr the credential thrugh the late renewal prcess.
