2 About the University of Toledo Founded in 1872, The University of Toledo is a research-active university. The University currently has an enrollment of approximately 17,000 undergraduate and 4,600 graduate students. The University of Toledo consists of thirteen academic colleges and a medical hospital. There are four campus locations. The 255-acre Bancroft Campus, the main campus neighborhoods, provides a suburban atmosphere, yet is an integral part of the civic, cultural, and commercial life of the community. The other campuses are The Toledo Museum of Art Campus and Center for the Visual Arts, the Scott Park Campus, and the Health Science Campus. 2

4 The College of Business and Innovation The College of Business and Innovation was established in 1930 and is currently the largest professional college on the campus of The University of Toledo. It is also among 15 percent of business colleges around the world to receive accreditation from The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International). The COBI takes great pride in its student-friendly atmosphere and its state-of-the-art technology. The college currently houses four 24- hour computer labs, including a virtual lab allowing students to work with laptops anywhere on campus. All classrooms are mediated and equipped with the latest wireless technology. In addition, the College of Business houses the John B. and Lillian E. Neff Trading Room with 12 Bloomberg terminals, which provide data and an array of analytical tools. COBI houses its own Business Career placing students in both internships and permanent career positions. Currently, the Business Career than 500 companies and takes great pride in its greater than an 80 percent placement rate upon graduation of those students seeking employment. staff provide a well-rounded college experience for students, both in and out of the classroom. The faculty bring relevance to the classroom and continuously advance the stateof-the-art knowledge about various topics/issues by translating their cutting-edge research contributions into classroom applications. The College of Business includes The Savage & Associates Complex for Business Learning and Engagement. This 54,000 square-foot facility is a state-of-the-art complex featuring and, in addition, serves as a hub for our community outreach and engagement activities. 4

7 The Role of the Dean the College to a variety of internal and external University constituencies. The Dean will provide the vision and leadership to implement a strategic plan and optimize the academic quality, market driven distinctiveness, and economic performance of the College and to remain an acknowledged leader in business education/learning, research/scholarship, and outreach/engagement. The Dean will interact with other administrators to promote the needs of the College on campus and in the surrounding community, including pursuing external funding. The University seeks a dynamic leader who recognizes and fosters academic values while cultivating collegial collaborative work. The Dean reports directly to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean assures that the College continues to serve its students and the region with programs of the highest quality and effectiveness, promoting excellence and diversity in undergraduate and graduate degree programs. In concert with faculty, the Dean is responsible for student and faculty recruitment, retention, and diversity. Supporting the COBI mission, the Dean will promote opportunities to advance the scholarly activities of faculty and when appropriate, work to establish new programs, including opportunities that interdisciplinary and entrepreneurial approaches and endeavors afford. The Dean must be comfortable serving as an emissary and advocate to internal and external constituencies. Essential Duties Provides leadership for quality instruction at all levels and for diversified instructional styles and modes of delivery emphasizing the use of technology to enhance learning. Understands and promotes student life and co-curricular activities as essential elements in learning. Vigorously promotes faculty scholarship, research and creative productions, and in cooperation with major gifts officer serves as lead fundraiser to accomplish strategic objectives. Provides leadership in policy development and direction for academic planning in support of the University Strategic Plan. Serves as the point person and face of COBI to external community. Guides the development and assessment outcomes for academic programs, faculty development, scholarship and teaching in conjunction with deans, chairs, directors, and faculty across the campus in alignment with the UT mission and values. Is committed to supporting and enhancing research, grant and contract activity. Guides overall academic policy in coordination with the Provost, Faculty Senate, vice presidents and other stakeholders. Ensures quality of undergraduate and graduate programs through documented analysis of student Campus-wide outcome assessments. Supports an environment for active and integrative learning that helps students achieve academic success and become career professionals, responsible citizens and life-long learners, building on the University s nationally recognized record of student community engagement. Leads the University in its commitment to cultural diversity, equal opportunity, and affirmative action. Ensures effective communication with faculty. Provides staff support for academic interaction with the Board of Regents. Demonstrates ability to facilitate partnerships among academic programs, other divisions of the university, faculty, students, and community constituents Communicates openly and frequently with staff and program coordinators while fostering a collaborative team model Monitors compliance with state, regional and specialized accreditation organizations. Participates in and oversees selection, hiring, and other personnel decisions associated with academic faculty and staff. 7

8 Essential Duties Campus-wide and External to Campus Builds partnerships and provides leadership and direction in the delivery of academic programs and services throughout the region in support of the University s mission. Facilitates partnerships among academic programs and other divisions of the university, the faculty, students, and administrators. Provides entrepreneurial and strategic leadership skills active seeks relationships and funding from the business community and state-wide industry Engages proactively with the business community, developing and enhancing the COBI s university s partnerships with the business community Initiates new and strengthens existing partnerships externally, and works with an interested and engaged advisory board eager to remain involved in the continued growth and success of the College. Opportunities for Leadership The COBI Dean is expected to be an engaged, inclusive, and inspiring leader with a demonstrated commitment to UT s mission and core values. He/She will serve as a visible and dynamic representative and champion the COBI mission and image, while focusing on the continued effort to increase the program s reputation locally, regionally and internationally. Within the first few years of the new Dean s tenure, special attention should be given to the following: 1. In conjunction with faculty, to conceptualize and develop a bold and distinctive vision for the COBI s future that builds upon the recently completed strategic plan 2. Further build upon a strong program of teaching, scholarship, research and service 3. Support and strengthen an environment focused on student success 4. Work with faculty, Assoc Deans, etc to prepare for AACSB re-accreditation. It is an integral role of the Dean to continually sustain and enhance the quality of our curriculum and programs in order to meet (or exceed) the standards of AACSB accreditation. 5. Play a key collaborative role as part of new university leadership 6. Serve as the COBI s principal public voice within the university, and externally in the community and industry 8

9 The ideal candidate will have demonstrated leadership and academic management abilities to guide the college in research, teaching and public service, as well as a record of success in fundraising and leadership skills to raise the college s profile and enhance community connections, The candidate should hold a terminal degree in business and have a distinguished record of teaching and scholarship, together with a successful history in industry. Other preferred qualifications include: Qualifications Previous successful administrative experience in higher education and/or corporate settings including personnel and budgetary experience; Evidence of effective community involvement and leadership and demonstrated ability to forge partnerships and build productive relationships with both campus and business community constituencies; Demonstrated commitment to student centeredness and optimization of student learning Broad knowledge of a wide range of business disciplines, academic trends and issues; Hands-on familiarity with the AACSB accreditation process; High ethical standards; Demonstrated commitment to the principles of student and faculty diversity; Dedication to excellence in teaching, research, and service, and a commitment to strategic planning as a means of innovative program development; Proven excellent leadership and administrative experience, and the ability to work with upper administration as a team member to shape the College s future; and Effective interpersonal skills and highly proficient oral and written communication skills. 9
