19 FRINGE SESSIONS SARA LOWES PRESENTS GRAPHENE SUITE, LIVE THURSDAY 25 JUNE, 13: , THE MARTIN HARRIS CENTRE (BUILDING NO. 42 ON THE CAMPUS MAP) In September last year, musician Sara Lowes was appointed composer in residence at the National Graphene Institute at The University of Manchester. Her brief to create a new piece of music that explores the relationship between science and music. After nine months of research, writing, experimentation and creativity, Sara s residency culminates at the end of June, coinciding with Graphene Week Here Sara will share and perform her full composition for the first time. The composition Sara has created has six movements and includes an ensemble of 11 musicians when performed complete. Each movement reflects in some way Sara s time at the National Graphene Institute, and explores the commonalities between the two creative processes: composition and scientific discovery. Mixing different musical styles and nuances, the piece also pays tribute to the pioneering female composers and scientists of the past. GRAPHENE IN NATURE JOURNALS: MEET THE EDITORS THURSDAY 25 JUNE, 17:30 18:30, THEATRE A Nature-branded journals continue to strive to publish the most significant advances in research on graphene and related 2D materials. We are on the look for novel findings whose importance can be appreciated not only by specialists in the field, but also by a broader audience of scientists in the natural sciences and related disciplines. The explosive growth of the field over the past decade and the evolving publishing landscape have changed the type and volume of submissions received, and subsequently the editorial criteria. Editors from Nature Materials, Nature Nanotechnology and Nature Physics will be present at this session and will give insight in the editorial process at Nature journals, as well as their views on current trends in publishing in Nature journals. They will answer questions on publishing graphene papers in Nature journals in an informal setting. Everyone is welcome to attend. 19
