5 Speaker Biographies Daniel Arthur is the current President of the UK Chapter of the International System Dynamics Society (Feb ). He also works as an advisor with International Policy Dynamics, which was founded to address policy issues and provide modelling services related to international trade and finance, economic development and environmental sustainability issues. He also has current interests in the area of Analytics and Business Intelligence in the OR Society of which he has been a member since He won the OR Society Runner-Up prize in the PhD competition in He has degrees in Mining Engineering (Camborne School of Mines), Hydrology for Environmental Management (Imperial College) and system dynamics/econometrics (University of Surrey). He has worked in insurance, aerospace, mobile telecoms, environmental science, healthcare, specialist manufacturing, advanced materials, civil engineering and mining industries. He has provided economic and business advisory and research services for the UK Government, European Commission, US Department for Commerce and for FTSE100 companies and SMEs alike. He has publications in System Dynamics Review and has work has been cited in the BIS Economics Paper No 3 and in the Department of Culture, Media and Sport CASE Programme of strategic research into the drivers of public engagement. Bob Cavana is a Reader in Management Systems and Research Convenor in the School of Management, Victoria Business School, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. He holds an MCom in Economics from the University of Auckland, NZ, and a PhD in Management (System Dynamics) from the University of Bradford, England. Previously he was Corporate Economist with the NZ Railways Corporation and has consulted to various NZ organisations on economic, strategic, systems and business research projects. He is a past President of the NZ Operational Research Society, a past Vice-President for the International System Dynamics Society and a former Managing Editor of System Dynamics Review ( ). Currently he is a New Zealand representative on the Executive Board of the Australia & New Zealand Academy of Management (ANZAM) and a Fellow of ANZAM. He has published in a wide range of international journals, and he is a co-author of Systems Thinking, System Dynamics: Managing Change and Complexity 2nd ed (Pearson Education, Auckland, 2007) and Applied Business Research: Qualitative and Quantitative Methods (Wiley, Brisbane, 2001; Chinese edition 2004). Jonathan Coyle works as a consultant improving the effectiveness of companies business development capabilities. This can include everything from call centres to complex multistakeholder, relationship based sales. He has extensive experience of leading major sales campaigns and bids to public sector organisations including MoD, Home Office and Department of Health as well as local government. Jonathan s company also invests in social enterprises providing both capital and business expertise. Jonathan has worked as a consultant for most of his career of nearly 30 years. He built his own business to a team of 100 which, at the time, had the largest independent System Dynamics consulting practice in the UK. He has also worked for major consultancies such as Turner & Townsend and Tribal. He has worked in a wide variety of sectors including public, telecoms, petrochemicals and financial services. He has also worked in a number of countries in areas such as North America, Continental Europe and South East Asia. Jonathan was a founder member of the UK chapter of the System Dynamics Society and was its president in He was conference chair of the Society s conference at Keble College Oxford in 2004.

6 John Morecroft is Senior Fellow in Management Science and Operations at London Business School where he teaches system dynamics, problem structuring and strategy in MBA, PhD and Executive Education programmes. He has served as Associate Dean of the School s Executive MBA and co-designed EMBA-Global, a dual degree programme with New York s Columbia Business School. He is a leading expert in strategic modelling and system dynamics and has written numerous journal articles. He has co-edited three books and published a system dynamics textbook, Strategic Modelling and Business Dynamics (Wiley 2007). He is a recipient of the Jay Wright Forrester Award of the System Dynamics Society, a Past President of the Society and a Founding Member. His research interests include the dynamics of firm performance and the use of models and simulation for strategy development. He has led applied research projects for international organisations including Royal Dutch/Shell, AT&T, BBC World Service, Cummins Engine Company, Harley-Davidson, Ericsson, McKinsey & Co and Mars. Before joining London Business School he was on the faculty of MIT s Sloan School of Management where he received his PhD. He also holds degrees from Imperial College, London and from Bristol University. Eric Wolstenholme holds a first degree and doctorate in Mining Engineering from the University of Nottingham. On graduation he trained as a coal mine manager and then moved on to become an Operational Research Scientist with the British Coal Operational Research Group. In 1976 he joined the Bradford University System Dynamics Research Group to model mining companies. This position acted as a springboard for a career in academic Management Science and consulting. He has helped to found two system dynamics consultancy companies (Cognitus and Symmetric). His academic appointments have included Professor and Head of Management Science at Bradford and Stirling Universities and Professor of Business Learning at Leeds Business School and London South Bank University. Eric has an international reputation in both academia and business for his work in the development and application of systems thinking and system dynamics. He has worked as a consultant at board level in a number of major public and private organizations and his experience includes work in health, utilities, oil, financial services, defence, mining, pharmaceuticals, supply chains and government. His numerous publications include two books System Enquiry - A System Dynamics Approach and The Evaluation of Management Information Systems - A Dynamic and Holistic Approach, both with Wiley. He has published over 50 refereed research papers and presented over 100 conference papers around the world as well as supervising 12 doctoral students. He was the founding editor of the System Dynamics Review and has been President of both the International Systems Dynamics Society and its UK Chapter. In 2004 he received the prestigious Jay Wright Forrester award for the best contribution to system dynamics in the preceding 5 years for his work on systems archetypes.
