2 SCHOOL AND TEACHER PROGRAMS PROGRAMS OVERVIEW The Maryland Zoo offers a variety of on-campus and outreach programs to meet the educational needs of teachers and their students. School programs are designed to support the Next Generation Science Standards and Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards in ELA and math. ON-SITE PROGRAMS FREE FIELD TRIP PROGRAM FOR MARYLAND SCHOOL GROUPS Field trips are offered for FREE to groups of Maryland school students with advance registration during the school year. School groups include all Maryland K-12 public and private schools, as well as head starts, day cares, and home schooling families. The Free Field Trip Program is in effect from August 25, 2014 through June 19, 2015, when proper documentation is provided with a reservation request. During the summer months, the Free Field Trip Program is limited to certain summer school programs. Please call the Education Department at to determine if your summer program qualifies for the free admission program. FREE SELF-GUIDED ZOO TREK Immerse your students in the world of adaptations, habitats, and other subjects with a self-guided Zoo Trek. These themed tours, which are correlated to Maryland curriculum standards, support an interactive visit to the Zoo that engages students with the animals and habitats of Africa, the sub-arctic, and Maryland. Themed Zoo Treks can be found on the Zoo website. ZOO INTRODUCTIONS Kick off your group s field trip with an overview of Zoo exhibits and topics. Students will meet an Animal Ambassador from the Zoo s teaching collection and will receive an excellent foundation for a day of learning and fun. Maximum group size: 60 students Program length: minutes Price: $130 per program ZOOLABS ZOOlabs are focused learning sessions that last 30 to 60 minutes depending on the program. With the use of hands-on activities and discussion, Zoo educators lead students through a fun and exciting class that supports curriculum standards for the State of Maryland. You can find a full list of all available ZOOlabs on our website, Our most popular ZOOlab topics include the following: SENSORY SLEUTHS (recommended for PreK ages 4 and 5) min. Students explore life in the farmyard using all five senses. KRAZY KRITTER KINGDOM (recommended for grades K-2) 45 minutes Students explore classification by looking at common characteristics of various animal groups and create their own taxonomies for a set of animals. GOT ADAPTATIONS? (recommended for grades 2-5) 45 minutes Congratulations! You Survive! Animals need food, water, and shelter to survive. Students learn about the amazing adaptations of animals at the Zoo that enable their wild counterparts to survive in their native habitats. MARYLAND MYSTERY ANIMAL (recommended for grades 3-5) 45 minutes Students become wildlife biologists, studying animals in Maryland. Students examine aspects of a mystery animal then they use a key and their clues to make an identification CLIMATE CHANGE (recommended for grades 4-8) 60 minutes Students explore how changes in climate can affect everything from a fungus to a polar bear, and talk about ways they can be agents of positive change. ANIMAL TRAINING (recommended for high school) 60 minutes Students get a close look at how zoos use basic training techniques and principles in psychology to care for animals. NEW FOR FALL 2014! ANIMAL ENRICHMENT (recommended for grades 4-8) 50 minutes Students learn about the importance of environmental enrichment in the lives of Zoo animals. ANIMAL BEHAVIOR (recommended for grades 7-12) 60 minutes Students learn about the role of animal behavior data in zoo biology and in wildlife conservation, and develop a research protocol to use in collecting their own behavior data at an exhibit. NEW FOR SPRING 2015! OIL SPILL (recommended for grades 4-8) minutes Students explore the effects of an oil spill on African black footed penguins and their habitat using hands-on activities. PENGUIN FIELD STUDIES (recommended for grades 4-8) minutes Species Survival Plans (SSPs) and other zoo conservation projects depend on the careful study of wild animal populations and their habitats. Students collect data by applying techniques used by zoos and other scientific groups to study of penguins in the Maryland Zoo and in the wild. Maximum group size: 25 students Program length: 30 to 60 minutes depending on the program Price: $130 per program PLANNING YOUR ON-SITE VISIT All field trips through the Free Field Trip Program for Maryland School Groups are booked via the Zoo s online reservation system. To book a Zoo Introduction or ZOOlab, please call For all on-site programs, one (1) adult is required for every eight (8) children. The Maryland Zoo offers substantially reduced admission rates for additional chaperones. From August 25, 2014 to April 30, 2015, one adult enters free for every four children. All additional adults pay $5.00 each. From 1
3 SCHOOL AND TEACHER PROGRAMS May 1, 2015 to June 19, 2015, one adult enters free for every four students, and all additional adults pay $11.00 each ZOO HOURS The Zoo is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily from March to December. In January and February, the Zoo is open Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. The Zoo is closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE ZOO A Zoo visit is primarily an outdoor walking experience. Our Zoo includes open terrain, shaded woods, hills of varying grades, and pathways both paved and unpaved. Please wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for any type of weather. Refunds will not be issued due to weather conditions. LUNCH AND GIFT SHOP The Zoo is pleased to offer pre-purchased lunches and gift bags for school groups. To order ANImeals and ZOOvenirs for your group, visit and org/zoovenirs. Go to school-programs/educational-materials. TEEN SERVICE LEARNING JUNIOR ZOO CREW The Zoo offers teens the wildest summer service learning program in town! Junior Zoo Crew is a fun and rewarding volunteer program for students aged with an interest in animal care, horticulture, and community service. For four weeks in the summer, teens participate in service projects around the Zoo and help to educate visitors about animals and conservation. Throughout the program, they join Zoo staff to learn about wildlife careers and Zoo operations. Select participants may have the opportunity to continue as Junior Keepers or Junior Interpreters during the school year. This program fulfills the Maryland graduation requirement for community service hours. Price: $75 registration fee (waived in cases of need) Deadline for Application: Applications are available in February at org/juniorzoocrew or call for more information and submission deadlines. TEEN SERVICE LEARNING - TEEN LEADERSHIP PROGRAM Teens can explore careers in the non-profit world through the Zoo s Teen Leadership Program. High school juniors and seniors will learn about fundraising, marketing, visitor services, finance, and human resources while planning their own Zoo fundraiser. For multiple Saturdays through the winter months, teens participate in important service projects and group activities with the opportunity to develop job readiness skills such as public speaking, strategic planning, resume writing, and collaborating with others. This program strives to engage underserved high school students in developing career leadership and life-skills and fulfills the Maryland graduation requirement for community service hours. The ZOOmobile brings educational and interactive programs featuring live animals to your school! ZOOmobile programs feature three or four Animal Ambassadors that support the program topic. If you are looking for a program topic that you do not see listed below, please contact us to discuss further options. PROGRAMS BY TOPIC RECOMMENDED FOR PRESCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS ONE, TWO, WHO S AT THE ZOO? (recommended for ages 2-3) 30 minutes What s wild about math? Practice counting skills while exploring the animal kingdom. ABC MYSTERY (recommended for ages 2-3) 30 minutes Alligator starts with an A. Newt starts with an N. What letter does Elephant start with? Learn about animals while practicing the alphabet. SENSORY SAFARI (recommended for ages 2-5) 30 minutes How does a snake smell? How does an owl see? Animal senses come alive as students learn all about how animals use their senses to survive. BARNYARD BONANZOO! (recommended for ages 2-5) 30 minutes Learn all about farm animals, essential goods they provide, and their unique importance. THE BIG BOOK OF ANIMAL TAILS (recommended for ages 3-5) 30 minutes Singing and storytelling bring bright, colorful illustrations as well as new vocabulary to life in this program all about tails! WADDLE AND WIGGLE (recommended for ages 3-5) 30 minutes Slither like a snake, hop like a rabbit, waddle like a penguin! Kids get in touch 2 3

RECOMMENDED FOR GRADES 1 TO 3 CRITTER COSTUMES Children play dress-up and use their powers of observation to explore animal characteristics and classification. Requires 3 chairs for audience participation. HABITAT HAPPENINGS Test your knowledge of animals and the places they live. Explore the diversity of worldwide habitats and learn how animals and humans survive in different places around the world. WHO RUNS THE ZOO? Ever wonder what it s like to work at a zoo? Take an imaginary journey and learn what it takes to make The Zoo run smoothly. MARYLAND NATIVE SPECIES Who says you have to travel across the globe to find amazing animals? Learn about the many intriguing animals that live in our backyard! NIGHT SHIFT How do nocturnal animals survive in the dark? Test your own sensory skills and meet some creatures of the night. Requires one electrical outlet in presentation area. SCALY SKINS Learn about creatures scaly and slithery! Spend time with cold-blooded animals and discover what s cool about herpetology. GOING, GOING, GONE Every day, more species and habitat vanish. Explore the reasons why and discover how our actions can make a difference. 4 RECOMMENDED FOR GRADES 4 AND UP FEAR: FRIEND OR FOE? Are you afraid of creatures that crawl, creep, or slither? Should you be? Meet some animals that may turn your fear to fascination. ON THE WING Meet some of our feathered friends and learn about their unique adaptations in this exciting program about feathers and flight. Animal Partner Programs Show your excitement for our Animal Ambassadors by becoming an Animal Partner! As an Animal Partner, your group will receive the following: A visit from the Animal Ambassador during your scheduled ZOOmobile program A photo of the Animal Ambassador to commemorate your experience A fact sheet and suggestions for educational activities to do with your students A year-long subscription to ZOOgram, the Zoo s triannual magazine for members The knowledge that you support the Maryland Zoo s conservation and education efforts PENGUIN PARTNER $150 in addition to the ZOOmobile fee. RAVEN PARTNER $100 in addition to the ZOOmobile fee. Other Animal Partner Programs are available, including snake, turtle, and alligator. Contact us for more information and to schedule your program. TRAVELING TRUNKS Let us help you incorporate wildlife into your curriculum with a traveling trunk. Each trunk includes educational materials, activities and lesson plans that can help your students get wild about learning! Planning Your ZOOmobile Visit PROGRAM LENGTH AGE RANGE AUDIENCE SIZE (MAX.) Trunks are appropriate for preschool and kindergarten age students. The following topics are currently available: Senses Discovery Prairie Dogs Price: $50, or $25 with the addition of a ZOOmobile, ZOOlab, or Zoo Introduction program (program fees apply). Additional shipping fees may apply. All traveling trunks are available for two weeks.
