INSIDE THE OUTDOORS Corporate Sponsorship Programs A collaboration with the Orange County Department of Education THE CLASSROOM IS NOT ALWAYS A ROOM There is a great, big, wonderful classroom out there called the outdoors.
Education reaches far beyond the classroom walls and a six hour day. Inside the Outdoors, administered by the Orange County Department of Education, is self-supporting and does not receive any tax-based funding. The Inside the Outdoors Foundation is a tax-exempt organization dedicated to supporting the Inside the Outdoors mission by raising funds, as well as building community awareness and involvement for Inside the Outdoors. Through Inside the Outdoors programs, children take part in fun and memorable hands-on experiences in the natural world. Student programs enhance lessons from the classroom, and community When children see for themselves how they are connected to the natural world, it creates a lifelong connection with them and they become better environmental stewards.
Interesting Facts About Inside the Outdoors Each year ,000 participants are served by our programs 88,000 students are from underserved communities and receive sponsorship to attend our programs 79,000 students and teachers move out of the classroom and into a living laboratory as text books and classroom curricula come to life in our programs 37,000 students experience our Traveling Scientist program in their classroom 26,000 students connect with science and nature for five days and four nights at Outdoor Science School 5,300 people are served by Inside the Outdoors Community Programs 5,000 teachers are served by our programs 74 school districts in Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles Counties are served by our programs 30 collaborative partners support Inside the Outdoors
Stimulating the boundless wonder children have for the natural world around them. That is our mission at Inside the Outdoors, and it is one we take very seriously. Our Science and Social Science standards-aligned programs take lessons from the classroom and create fun, unforgettable hands-on experiences. These are powerful moments that leave children with a lifelong enthusiasm for the environment. Inside the Outdoors programs include Service Learning, a powerful model that turns learning into community action. I felt like I could actually help our world. Melody, 6th grade student James Guinn Elementary, Anaheim Unified School District after a week at Outdoor Science School Outdoor Science School At Outdoor Science School, each year more than 26,000 fifth and sixth grade students embark each year on a weeklong learning experience that creates lifetime memories. Held high in the San Bernardino Mountains, students are immersed in the outdoors, where school lessons are transformed into field observations and discovery. For many, this is the first time ever seeing the mountains. This weeklong overnight program inspires children to believe that they make a difference. Here, students and teachers develop social skills and gain self-esteem that allows them reach new heights. Both students and teachers leave Outdoor Science School empowered to create change in their communities because they know more about the natural world and themselves. Field Trips Each year, over 79,000 students and teachers move out of the classroom and into a living laboratory as text books and classroom curricula come to life. Led by our experienced staff, many students are introduced for the first time to wildlife and natural places that they had never seen before. These exciting and hands-on Field Trips allow children to experience the real world of science, history, and social science in a natural setting.
Traveling Scientist This in-school environmental education program engages 37,000 students in preschool through sixth grade annually with a wide range of hands-on classroom activities that teach students about our local ecosystems and wildlife, and the importance of understanding and practicing water and energy conservation. Community Programs In 2009, more than 5,300 students and their families took part in Inside the Outdoors Community Programs. Our outdoor education events bring families and the community together, where children and adults learn about the natural habitats of our region and, more importantly, how they can be better stewards of the environment. Our programs are promoted by our community partners, media and promotional literature distributed to all students and teachers who participate in Inside the Outdoors programs. Whether they are discovering nature under the stars during a night hike, admiring the newest eco-fashion designs during our annual Eco Fabulous Fashion Show, or learning how to live greener at Community Nature Day, they have fun together as a family and gain knowledge that empowers them to protect and conserve the environment.
