1 WGTC Student Organization Accomplishments Answering the Call of Excellence (ACE) Program The Answering the Call of Excellence Program (ACE) is an academic support, counseling, mentoring, and social support program intended to provide academic enrichment, leadership development enhanced sense of professionalism and self-advocacy, critical thinking and communication skills leading to program completion, graduation and employment. This academic year approximately 90 students were formally affiliated with the ACE Program. However, many more took advantage of the counseling and program opportunities. The opening General Session has held on Thursday August 29, 2013 at the Douglas Campus. The guest speaker was Dr. Earl Suttle, a well-known motivational speaker. The first formal workshop was held on November 21, 2013 at the Douglas Campus. The guest speaker was Mrs. Carla DeBose, from the Technical College System of Georgia System Office. She spoke about Georgia s workforce development and the regional/national economy. On Thursday March 27, 2014 Ms. Latezes Bridges, a successful entrepreneur and international business consultant spoke on the Douglas Campus, Tapping into the Power of Your Potential. On Wednesday, April 23, 2014 Mr. Arlen Griffin, an internationally recognized comedian, actor, author and motivational speaker spoke to the ACE students at their endof-year recognition program. Five graduating students were recognized. The ACE Program students were scheduled for two site visitations to the KIA Automobile Manufacturing Plant in LaGrange, GA and the Marriott Corporation Offices in Atlanta. On all five campuses college resource persons were invited to ACE Program meetings to inform students about personally maximizing the use of campus based resources such as financial aid, career services, and counseling support center. 2 National Technical Honor Society and Statewide Student Leadership Council Awards Competitive Event Place Students Citizenship Award Amelia Spradley, Radiology Anita Welch, Business Admin Tech Chapter Display Anita Cooper, Business Admin Tech Anita Welch, Business Admin Tech Prepared Speech Job Interview 3 rd Ann Bolen, Business Admin Tech Amelia Spradley, Radiology Mary Chandler, Radiology NTHS students also participated in a Community Service fundraiser. Community Service is an important part of NTHS membership. This year they participated in Books for Brighter Beginnings, a children s book drive. We collected over 1000 books to be distributed to elementary school aged children all over the state of Georgia. Our students also collected over $350 for the Relay for Life for the LaGrange Campus. (2013) 2014 Book Collections were around 700 books. NTHS worked in conjunction with books For Keeps out of Athens GA and all of the donations went to the Books for Keeps Organization to be distributed around the state. Student s also collected over $700 for the Relay for Life Event. Theatre Troupe WGTC's Theatre Troupe performed its second theatrical production, "School for Scandal" at the Mabry Center for the Arts in January 16, On April 26, it presented its third production, a spring dinner theater, consisting of both student written scenes and scenes from famous plays. Phi Theta Kappa PTK inducted 29 new members for the 2013 academic year. Student Government Association (SGA) The students organized a donation for the local Animal Shelters at all campuses to supplies for the seven service areas local animal shelters. The first SGA Scholarships were approved and presented to students. The scholarships included the Service Award, Leadership Award and the President s Award. Three students were selected and received a $500 dollar scholarship for two consecutive semesters. Student Government remodeled the Student Center at the Carroll Campus. The remodel included new flooring, paint and new furniture of the space.
3 The organization approved the Student Life Program to offer free confidential counseling to all students through Tanner. Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) The West Georgia Technical College students joined other DECA chapters from around the state to learn about the business of baseball. The students were able to meet marketing executive of the Atlanta Braves. Students learned about the marketing activities of the Braves franchise as well as hear how the marketing executives got their start in their career. 8 Welcome Breakfast on Campus for incoming radiography students, August, Douglas Chapter Donated toiletry items to S.H.A.R.E House of Douglasville Donated Food for Children s Families at Children s Health Care of Atlanta Planned/scheduled/participated in national Radiologic Technology day at Douglas campus to promote community/college awareness (over 80 visitors attended the event over the three-hour period) Club members attended 26th Student & Radiographer s Seminar & Educator s Conference in Atlanta, Georgia an educational activity. SkillsUSA West Georgia Technical College students brought home one gold medal, five silver medals, and one bronze medal at SkillsUSA state competition in Atlanta March More than 500 college students from across the state of Georgia took part in the three-day competition. Cynthia Lemons, who earned a gold medal in Employment Application, will move on to compete on a national level at the 50th Annual National Leadership and Skills Conference June 23-27, in Kansas City, Mo. Cody Tucker, Joanne Garza and Christopher Ladner won silver for Crime Scene Investigation team and were sponsored by Louis Shepard, Criminal Justice Department Chair on the LaGrange Campus. Brittney Madden also won silver for Criminal Justice while James Cody Foster also won silver for his artwork in Welding Sculpture and was sponsored by Brandon Parrott, LaGrange Campus Welding Instructor. Dennis Slade won Bronze for Architectural Drafting and was sponsored by the LaGrange Campus Drafting Program Chair, Jerry Gray. Cynthia LeMons, a student at West Georgia Technical College, LaGrange campus, was awarded the Gold in Employment Application Process at the annual National Leadership and Skills Conference and SkillsUSA Championships. The competition was held at H. Roe Bartle Hall, Municipal Auditorium and American Royal in Kansas City, Missouri, on June 26, Kappa Beta Delta West Georgia Technical College held its second induction of Kappa Beta Delta, an honor society for Associate Degree business major students associated with Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) on March 26, To be eligible for membership, students must rank in the upper 20 percent of students pursuing business degrees at the time of invitation to membership, have completed a minimum of 15 semester hours of credit, of which six are in business subjects toward the degree program and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. As members of Kappa Beta Delta, students are eligible for lifetime recognition, networking opportunities and scholarships. Art Exhibit
9 West Georgia Technical College opened its fourth annual traveling Art Exhibit at the Douglas Campus February 26, The exhibit highlights creative individuals and their work that are part of the West Georgia Technical College community. Out of the 149 submissions received, there 20 were Showcase winners and 10 were Merit Award winners including students, a few faculty and staff members from all five campuses and the new Virtual Learning Campus. Submissions opened online during the Summer Semester and continued through February 7. Each entrant was limited to two pieces. Of the 30 winners, 10 were from the Douglas campus, seven from the Carroll Campus, six from the Coweta Campus, three from the LaGrange Campus, three from the Virtual Learning Campus and one from the Murphy Campus. Student Nursing Association (SNA) Relay for Life- raised over $1500 Participation in COSL leadership conference sponsored by GANS Coat Drive: New or slightly worn coats and winter wear items collected for Christ s Closet in Tallapoosa, GA National Parkinson s Foundation Walk: Fundraiser for people affected by Parkinson s. Raised $570. Walk for Awareness: bake sale to raise funds to donate to the American Lung Association and Scottish Rite; raised $ Winter Wear Drive: New or slightly worn coats, hat, scarves and gloves collected for Christ s Closet in Tallapoosa, GA Convention/participation in the GANS conference National Parkinson s Foundation walk: fundraiser for Parkinson s Disease research WGTC Project Care food drive: Can food donations Toys for Tots: Toys collected for Christ s Closet in Tallapoosa, GA ANGEL Christmas Fund: Christmas donation for nursing student family in need Best and Crunchiest Original Nourishment (BACON) BACON hosted a dumpling seminar, Chef day for Newnan Academy Daycare and Boys and Girls Club Beauty Industry Student Alliance (BISA) Three West Georgia Technical College cosmetology students along with cosmetology instructor Amina Blackmon attended the Premiere Orlando Hair Show May 30-June 2 in Orlando, Fla. The Murphy Campus students, Shawanna Harris, Courtney Baxter and Taylor Jordan, were able to attend various classes from educators across the country. The classes ranged from simple hair care, hair color placement to camouflage thinning hair, fantasy make up, interlocking and tape techniques for artificial hair extensions, and
10 smoothing treatments for frizzy hair. The students also had the opportunity to take a class with a celebrity hair stylist from Atlanta. Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) Cathy Robinson, a West Georgia Technical College student in the marketing management program, was honored as one of nine finalists for the Technical College System of Georgia s 2014 Student of the Year award. Robinson was congratulated by TCSG Commissioner Ron Jackson during a banquet for the system s best students and instructors at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Atlanta on April 24. Study Abroad Twelve West Georgia Technical College students and three instructors traveled abroad to China April 4-12, visiting vocational colleges in Beijing and Shanghai during the weeklong excursion. The China trip was West Georgia Technical College s second study abroad trip. The inaugural trip was taken in April 2013 to Belfast, Northern Ireland. Students who attended the trip have a specific project/assignment within their courses that aligned with study abroad objectives. Following the trip, students will prepare classroom presentations for their courses and community events on their time aboard. Unlike the previous trip, the students had an opportunity to visit two different colleges in different cities. The students also had the opportunity to visit the Great Wall of China, a variety of temples and a silk factory.
