1 College of Business Minot State University Beavers on Business Constitution Article I. Name and Affiliation. NAME: The organization will be called Beavers on Business (BOB). AFFILIATION: Beavers on Business will be affiliated with the following organizations: Accounting Club. The purpose of the Accounting Club is to exchange information, experiences, ideas, and methods relating to accounting, provide outside speakers for the members of the organization as well as the student body of this university, provide a better understanding of the accounting profession and promote high ethical standards, provide programs to promote interaction among students interested in the field of accounting. Collegiate DECA. Minot State University Collegiate DECA is a local chapter of National DECA, Inc. (an association of marketing students). The organization creates close ties with the business community providing essential opportunities for members and an appreciation of the American free enterprise system. Participation in the highest quality of competitive events and programming available to post-secondary students is also a key factor in Collegiate DECA members personal career development. Collegiate DECA is affiliated with the state and national organizations. Phi Beta Lambda. Phi Beta Lambda is affiliated with the state and national organizations of the same name. The purpose of Phi Beta Lambda is to develop competent, aggressive business leadership, strengthen the confidence of member in themselves and their work, create more interest and understanding in the intelligent choice of business occupation, encourage members in the development of individual projects in establishing themselves in business, encourage members to improve the home and community, participate in worthy undertakings for the improvement of business and the community, develop character, prepare for useful citizenship, and foster patriotism, participate in cooperative effort, encourage and practice efficient money management, encourage improvement in scholarship and promote school loyalty, and improve and establish standards for entrance into business occupations. 1
2 Students in Free Enterprise. The purpose of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) is to establish an organization that will provide college students the best opportunity to make a difference and develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills through learning, participating, and teaching the principles of the FREE ENTERPRISE study at Minot State University. Organization affiliation will be determined by submission and acceptance of a constitution to the BOB Executive Council and meeting the criteria in the BOB Bylaws. Article II. Purpose of Organization. Minot State University Beavers on Business (BOB) is a business organization that provides education and professional development opportunities for its students. BOB will oversee operations of all College of Business organizations and provide membership and growth opportunities for student involvement and growth as well as a unified promotional effort. BOB objectives are to foster the highest level of professionalism, represent minot state university in an honorable manner, teach the necessary skills to be successful in the business world, increase participation in affiliated organizations, strengthen business-related competencies, make a positive difference in the community, build relationships with the professional community, provide opportunities for members to be engaged at a level at which they can be successful, support affiliated student organizations, and prepare students for the transition to the professional working world. Article III. Membership. Membership in BOB is open to all Minot State University students and will not be restricted on the basis of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, or political affiliation. Beavers on Business membership will be based on a prospective member s desire to participate and grow as a student and professional. As a member, one is required to regularly attend organization meetings, support organization events, and be dedicated to the organization as a whole. Article IV. Organization Structure. 2
3 Executive Council. The Executive Council will consist of the members and conditions expressed below. Presidents of all student organizations within the College of Business or, at the discretion of the organization, an elected member of the organization. Presidents will be elected on the basis of the organization s election requirements. Membership will be for the duration of one academic year, beginning with fall semester. The Executive Council will elect two officers, the President and the Secretary/Treasurer, from among Executive Council members. Executive Council officers will be elected by nomination and majority vote of the Executive Council. Length of service will be one academic year; officers may not hold the same position for more than two full terms. Upon an as-needed basis, the BOB Executive Council will conduct actions in the summers via or telephone. Purposes of the Executive Council. It will be the purpose of the Executive Council to serve as a liaison between the student body and the dean of the college, create better opportunities for affiliated organizations, provide fundraising, promotional, and developmental assistance for affiliated organizations, make decisions regarding the allocation of financial resources to student organizations within the College of Business, upon request, promote the interests of the College of Business to undecided majors, to business students, to the university community, and to the community at large, serve as a governing body for all student organizations affiliated with the College of Business, recognize best practices of the student organizations, create mechanisms for collaboration between and among the student organizations affiliated with the College of Business, and conduct other responsibilities as deemed appropriate, reasonable, and within the scope of the BOB Executive Council s identified purposes. Officer Duties. President. Set meeting agenda and preside over all meetings. Represent the BOB organization on campus and in the community. Ensure that the organization is operating in conformity with the standards set forth by Minot State University. Ensure no member be denied her/his rights of membership. Maintain communication at all levels of the organization. Work with the Secretary/Treasurer to solicit additional funding from the Student Government Association. In the event of a vacancy in an office, call a special election to fill the position. 3
4 Secretary/Treasurer. Maintain accurate records of organization transactions. Report on the financial condition of the organization at all meetings. Arrange fundraising opportunities for the organization. Solicit additional funding if needed from the Student Government Association in conjunction with the President. Fulfill secretarial duties of the organization. Removal from Office. An officer may be removed by a unanimous vote of the other officers of the BOB Executive Council if her/his actions are deemed inappropriate by the membership. Article V. Advisor. The Executive Advisor will be the Dean of the College of Business of Minot State University. The Assistant Advisor will be the student advisor for the College of Business. Assistance from various faculty and staff members and individuals in the community will also be permitted with approval of the Executive Advisor. The Executive Advisor will assume those responsibilities outlined in this constitution and/or found in University Policy. Article VI. Meetings. The BOB organization shall hold regular meetings/practices during the academic term except when holiday, examination periods, or other events make meeting times impractical. Meetings will be called by the president of the Executive Council. Each organization will be provided equal time to discuss activities and opportunities with members. Regular attendance at organization meetings is expected. Special meetings may be called as deemed necessary by the Executive Council, or by a simple majority vote of one of the affiliated organizations. Special meetings must be called at least one week in advance of the intended meeting date. Article VII. Actions. A course of action may be approved at a BOB meeting by the vote of a simple majority of members present. Article VIII. Finance. BOB will be funded by student fees as disbursed by the Student Government Association, College of Business funds, fundraising efforts, and/or special donations. 4
5 Article IX. Bylaws. BOB may approve bylaws for the specific operation of this organization. No bylaws shall be adopted that contradict the provisions of this constitution. BOB may adopt, amend, or rescind any bylaw by a two-thirds vote of the membership present. Amendments to the bylaws must be submitted in writing at a regular meeting of the organization. Said amendment(s) will be voted on at a subsequent meeting. Article X. Amendments. Amendments to this constitution must be submitted in writing at a regular meeting of the organization. Said amendment(s) will be voted on at a subsequent meeting. In order to adopt the amendment, a vote of two-thirds of the general membership is necessary. The Minot State University Student Welfare and Affairs Committee must approve all amendments to this constitution. Article XI. Ratification. This constitution shall become effective upon approval by a two-thirds vote of the membership, the Student Welfare and Affairs Committee, and the Student Government Association of Minot State University. 5
