2 Phi Theta Kappa Overview International Honor Society for community college students Society recognizes academic achievements and encourages scholarship of its members Community of scholars who contribute their own unique and diverse life experiences Over 100,000 students inducted each year

3 Phi Theta Kappa History Founded in 1918 by two-year college presidents in Missouri Organizers sought to recognize scholastic excellence and establish a common purpose and standards for honors organizations Society modeled after senior honor society, Phi Beta Kappa

4 Phi Theta Kappa - Meaning Phi Theta Kappa is taken from the initial letters of three Greek words meaning: Wisdom Aspiration Purity

5 Phi Theta Kappa Structure Local Local chapter = Mt. San Jacinto College Beta Delta Omega Regional 29 Regions in the United States Region - California International 1200 chapters located in all 50 states, Canada, Germany, British Virgin Islands, and the Pacific Rim Over 2 million members

6 Mission Statement Phi Theta Kappa's mission is two-fold: 1) Recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students 2) Provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in the hallmarks of Phi Theta Kappa: scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.

16 Eligibility Requirements Enrolled in a regionally accredited institution like MSJC offering an associate degree program Completed at least 12 units of coursework leading to an associate degree program (part-time students may be eligible) Obtained a 3.5 Grade Point Average at time of application

17 Membership Fees and Responsibilities Membership fee = $79.00 One-time payment for lifetime membership in Phi Theta Kappa $45 to Phi Theta Kappa International $5 to Phi Theta Kappa Regional $29 to Beta Delta Omega Chapter Members are not required to participate in local chapter meetings or events to receive all of the benefits described previously However, active participation in our local chapter events can be included in future scholarship and transfer applications as an example of how you participated in the college community

18 Officer Positions Officers are active members that plan, organize, and execute chapter events with the help of the Faculty Advisors. Officers develop professional skills and have the opportunity to travel to local conferences. Officer elections are held once a year in early May. We encourage all Phi Theta Kappa members to run for office and vote!
