1 GRAPHIC DESIGN COURSE DESCRIPTIONS The proposed curriculum adheres to the guidelines of the National Association of Schools in Art and (NASAD) Undergraduate Programmes in Graphic. BA Year 2 30 credits DES 201 Theory of Art and This course is a general overview of a movement or a period in the art and design. Students are introduced to a specific period of history highlighting important events in the art world in a particular area such as fashion design, graphic design, interior design, industrial design, etc, and observing the changes and developments within each area. DES 221 IT for Art and This course is designed to give all the design students an introduction to the basic theory of computing and a broad appreciation of how computers are used in design. Students should gain hands on experience of the basic of Photoshop. DES 231 Professional Practice Methods This course is designed to introduce the standards that define the expectations of a professional designer, and the principles of integrity that demonstrate respect for the profession, for colleagues, for clients, for audiences or consumers, and for society as a whole. Topics may include the use of illustrations, software, photography, environmental responsibility, copyright, ethics, etc. GRD 222 IT for Graphic I DES
2 In this course, the student will learn how to layout her ideas, and execute them using the computer. It is a project-based course; the student will learn all her computing knowledge from the point of view of what it will do for her as a designer and not as a technologist. GRD 231 Fundamentals of Graphic and Typographic This module is an introduction to the basics of design including the use of space, form, rhythm, repetition, grids, patterns, symmetry and asymmetry, negative and positive images, half tone values, contrasts, and the relationship of elements on the page, emphasis, hierarchies, priorities, articulation, organization, structure, and de-structure. In addition, it will include a short history of the development of printed alphabet from the original hand drawn letterforms to contemporary digital typefaces. Students will learn how to classify and choose typefaces according to the style of the typeface, its origination and use. GRD 261 Colour and Illustration This course introduces students to explore color theory along with understanding its composition. Through this process students will recognize colour systems and interaction since it is probably the most relative element in art and design. GRD 263 Graphic Vocabulary and Visual Rhetoric This module concentrates on the form or visual shaping of the design. It focuses on the origination of ideas and the solving of communication problems. Students will learn how to think, brainstorm and use the design methodology in order to create communicative concepts. GRD 271 Environmental : Signs and Symbols The course focuses on examining and exploring the use of signs and symbols; the science of semiotics: the language, use and vocabulary of signs as a means of communicating simple or complex messages through basic, often simple, visual means to reach, a broad audience of users. The student designer
3 will develop skills in creating and designing signs and symbols. Liberal Arts (3 credits) BA Year 3 30 credits DES 341 Photography FDN The course teaches students the basic knowledge of photographic fundamentals relevant to student in fashion, graphic, and interior design, as will as the relation between these and media. Students are expected to use the features of digital cameras, techniques for shooting well-composed and artistic photographs, and ways to enhance photos on computer. DES 351 Business Simulation Marketing I & Themed project meant to present elements of brand management and business development, and to increase awareness of project management practices such as estimating project costs, budget management, time management, scheduling, and contract administration, relevant to the Fashion, Graphic and Interior students. GRD 323 IT for Graphic II Editorial GRD This course will utilize new technology and introduce the students to the editorial design techniques It consists of various experimental projects aimed at exploring different uses and approaches of editorial design. The students will develop their knowledge and skills in using the appropriate software to execute their creative communicative designs.
4 GRD 324 IT for Graphic III Motion Graphics GRD This course will utilize new technology and introduce the students to the creation and use of moving image. It consists of various experimental projects aimed at exploring different uses and approaches of moving image design. The students will develop their knowledge and skills in using the appropriate software to execute their creative communicative designs GRD 360 Layout & Editorial : Print Management and Production GRD This course will establish a sound foundation which lies behind good book design, and magazines in the manner of the Modern Movement and International Style. Furthermore, it covers print methods and print techniques including colour separation, plate processing and the actual production process. It will also include the choice of papers, printing onto various surfaces, paper engineering and finishing processes and binding. GRD 372 Visualization & Presentation of Data GRD This course will introduce the students to the design of maps, charts, and tables. Students will learn in depth how to dissect the information and represent it in an aesthetic pictorial form, respecting the hierarchy and coding, and facilitating the search of data.

Students will learn how to use more complicated grids, which allows more flexibility in designing. Students will learn how to communicate an idea using Arabic type alone, and with Latin type on the same page. The designers will develop an understanding of the guidelines and principles of legibility in using Arabic typography. Liberal Arts (3 credits) BA Year 4 30 credits DES 411 Media and the Culture of This course is designed to enhance and complete the programme by enabling students to have a creative approach to fashion, graphic, and interior design as well as the relation between these and media. DES 452 Business Simulation Marketing II & DES
6 This course develops further the understanding of professional design organisations, and business processes such as marketing, strategic planning and accounting procedures making use of relevant business computer applications (e.g. EXCEL, Photoshop, Project Management tool). DES 492 Portfolio and Website Production To develop final portfolio designs and upload to the World Wide Web where appropriate using appropriate software, and to prepare for the final show and public exhibition. Problematic issues that arise within the peer group will be debated and potential problem solving strategies/alternatives for individual students will be discussed. In addition, the student will have the opportunity to develop and execute a full range of packaging design including pop-ups. GRD 496 Graphic Professional Practice Work experience will provide students with practical experience in areas which pertain to their specific interests and skills. Although employment will be coordinated through the Career Services office and Faculty members, students will be encouraged to find their own employment opportunities. GRD 497 Final Year Project - Guided project 9
7 Studio-based course culminating with an individual project and developing students full awareness of graphic design business practices, methods and techniques relevant to their discipline. Emphasis is placed on creativity and originality of ideas. Liberal Arts (3 credits) Implementation Mechanism The Teaching & learning methodologies include class room teaching, seminars, studio work, demonstrations, group discussions. The students will be assessed through examinations, coursework, seminars, presentations, written reports, projects, portfolios and practice based assessments. Graduation Project & Practical Training GRD 497 (9 credits) and GRD 496 (3 credits) are the final project and professional practice respectively. Through these courses students will be exposed to the actual working of the Graphic industry and their roles. These courses will enable the students to look at things more wholistically and with a practical viewpoint. These will also prepare the students for the job market in the local scenario. In graphic design the final project is the culmination of all the knowledge students have gained in their 4 years in the form of a campaign based on a theme. The collection is conceptulised, developed, executed and show cased by the students in the form of an Art gallery at the end of the year.
