1 Biada 11, Barcelona in Graphic Design IED Barcelona is offering a 4 year official s in Design (240 ECTS). Its objective is to transform passion, talent and creativity into knowledge and abilities that allow future design professionals to develop their careers in Design, Fashion, Visual Communication or Management for Creative Industries.

2 GENERAL INFORMATION Language: Spanish/English Credits: 240 ECTS Duration: 4 Years Hours: Monday to Friday full time (8 am pm, in average 5 hours per day) Calendar: The academic year starts in September, 2014 Head Office: Fabio Filippi VISUAL COMMUNICATION AREA IED Visual Communication trains professionals capable of developing strategic, creative and artistic aspects of visual communication, a profile named visual designer in accordance with the sector trends. Media design, the creation of visual experiences or designing strategic gaming are parts of the knowledge that students will acquire in order to enter successfully in the labour market on the fields of communication and visual creativity, advertisement and new digital platforms. The school collaborates continuously with visual communication companies and institutions, all teachers are active professionals (video designers, graphic designers, illustrators, multimedia animators, brand managers ). The culture of the project is the common thread of all didactics and we have a video and photography set, a sound workshop, the latest generation of audiovisual materials and computer labs. WHO IS UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE IN GRAPHIC DESIGN FOR? The in Graphic Design is aimed at image and visual communication industry professionals. A key feature is a cross- cutting understanding of graphic communication and all areas where it is applied within the industry and business, with projects and design seen as a user-oriented communication experience. Students can specialise in graphic design, motion graphics & video, illustration and animation. GRAPHIC DESIGN (SPANISH/ENGLISH) The course is aimed to form specialists in visual communication, capable of conceptualizing, structuring and developing an effective communication, by controlling the trinomial formed by methodology, technics and technology. A graphic designer is an expert in using graphics arts, either static or in motion, to develop branding and corporate image for a company, as well as to design specific applications such as posters, packaging and signage. 2

3 MOTION GRAPHICS & VIDEO (ENGLISH) This course intends to train professional designers capable of working in audiovisual productions and, through generating visual experiences for the user, create innovative projects in communication. The video designer is able to create motion graphics, visual installations and projects in which real image, short films, spots and graphic design create a new communication language for audiovisual media, Internet and mobile devices. ILLUSTRATION AND ANIMATION (SPANISH) The illustrator is a design professional that make ideas come to life through concepts, characters and situations using his capacity of representation, imitation or creative transformation of reality. The principal base of the course is graphic design but this professional will be able to work transversally in the areas of illustration and animation. JOB OPPORTUNITIES Graphic designer, visual communicator, creative director, art director, typographer, specialist in branding, corporate identity, editorial, packaging, signage, posters, infographies, web, motion graphics, storyboard, script and short film producer, video art, sound, photography and video director, illustrator, 2D animator, digital video director. 1 ECTS = 25 comprehensive hour of work. REPRESENTATION TECHNIQUES II Instrumental techniques in structure, expression and 2D and 3D representation. Construction, composition and transmission of ideas, thoughts and information. Drawing as a part of the design project. PROJECT COMMUNICATION II Graphic representation using digital technology. Information management. Digital devices and strategies. Trends in information control and communication. VOLUME I Investigation into volume and spatial concepts. Investigation and experimentation methods specific to the subject. SCIENCE APPLIED TO DESIGN The scientific method. Methods for analysis and simulation. Investigation and experimentation in science applied to design. Mathematical, physical and chemical knowledge applied to design. Methodologies used to assess the environmental impact of processes and materials. Sustainable development. Reuse. INTRODUCTION TO MARKETING Learn about different work areas of marketing, as well as the main tools applicable to each of them. Application of principles and tools for case analysis. Offer an overview of marketing analysis and planning. SOCIOLOGY Examine the main sociological theories related to design. Discover useful microtheories applicable to daily reality. Enable students to understand and create qualitative and quantitative sociological tools. Understand the different types of society in order to realize how they usually work. It deals with the concept of language, fundamental codes and systems of semiotics in order to achieve a critical point of view when viewing the world of design, art, society and culture. Analyse multiple design examples from a semiotic point of view, from modern age to nowadays to develop a major conscience of structures and communication systems. TYPOGRAPHY I Study the history, construction, classification and drawing techniques of typographic typefaces. Use of expressive typographic elements applied to the design of typographic typefaces, alphabets, monograms and symbols. COMPUTER TOOLS I Determine the fundamental elements to learn about vectorial design and its use in projects. 7

8 PHOTOGRAPHY Examine the tools and media in professional photography. Analyse photographic images for their grammatical and syntactical elements: focus, points of view, light and time. Determine photography genres and rhetorical figures in image. GRAPHIC TECHNIQUES Study the history and technical characteristics of the main printing systems. Paper analysis: production, characteristics and binding. Analyse different types of production. ANIMATION TECHNIQUES Techniques of movement and the space-time relationship. Observation and representation of believable reality in the eyes of the spectator. DIGITAL COMMUNICATION I Develop an understanding of basic digital techniques in order to apply them in projects. WORKSHOP I Propose and develop a project within the area of video design from a conceptual, technical and formal point of view, following a project methodology. HISTORY OF GRAPHIC DESIGN Study of graphics as a system of communication. Analysis of the big formative experience of Design in the 20th century. AUDIOVISUAL GRAPHIC DESIGN Acquire the theoretical and practical skills related to creating and understanding audiovisual language. INTERDISCIPLINARY PROJECT Study and complete design projects from a practical, interdisciplinary point of view in different multidisciplinary groups, observing the surroundings and their interpretation in the modern world. TYPOGRAPHY II Learn how to organise and use typographic elements in general and more specifically, within text. COMPUTER TOOLS II Learn how to use IT programs to optimise page composition and use them as a process of creating and producing a graphic project. 8

9 DIGITAL COMMUNICATION II Introduction of the language of the web environment and the set of required tools to design, develop and run a web application, where the architecture of information and media design are consolidated as the reference points. SCRIPT AND STORYBOARD Introduce students to the idea of the script. Learn how to write scripts, putting one s ideas down on paper and looking for the best way to explain the story using all the forms of audiovisual narration. VIDEO PRODUCTION Study the theory and technical foundations of photographic direction. Learn about colour control and lighting techniques used in moving images. POST PRODUCTION I Students acquire the principles and essential tools to edit and post-produce an audiovisual piece. ANATOMY Initiate students to the ability to know and represent structure concepts and volumetric proportions of human body with drawing and visual communication elements. Improve and reinforce the abilities of observation, synthesis and representation of anatomical structures of human figure and its relation with objects and space. CHARACTERIZATION Provide students with the necessary tools to learn how to design a character to be applied to a role or a project. ANIMATION I Broaden the knowledge in the study of movement logics and the relation between space and time, putting different animation techniques into practice. 9

11 EDITORIAL PROJECT AND INTERACTIVE COMMUNICATION Provide the theoretical and practical knowledge required to carry out editorial projects. Guide students in advanced design projects using innovation-based methodology in new multimedia products that interact with the user. GRAPHIC DESIGN STRATEGY AND MANAGEMENT Introduce students to the professional reality of graphic design, giving theoretical information and basic methodological resources in order to develop a design project. PROJECT COMMUNICATION Develop the expressive skills required to complete a portfolio based on investigation of one s own projects. Guide students on making a formal communication proposal for these projects. CALLIGRAPHY, SCREENING AND ENGRAVING WORKSHOP Introduction to the professional practice, providing theoretical and methodological information in calligraphy, screen printing and engraving for the development of typography. SHORT FILM WORKSHOP Introduction to the professional practice, providing audiovisual theory and methodology for the development of a short film. SCRIPT AND STORYBOARD WORKSHOP Introduction to the professional practice, providing audiovisual theory and methodology for the development of an animation pre-production. PROJECT I Develop a specific project according to the chosen academic itinerary using visual communication as an integrative language starting from a briefing. WORKSHOP II Developan experimental project of visual communication to solve the needs expressed in an initial briefing. Three specific stages compose the creative process: Research, Development and Production. EDITING TECHNIQUES Study of the techniques, supports and processes used in new technologies edition within the area of graphic arts. 11

12 CONTEMPORARY COMMUNICATION Analyze and reflect on the evolution of communication and the audiovisual world and its impact on the 20th and 21st centuries. Overview and criticism of the latest trends. Reflect on their impact and cultural, style and social necessities. Comprehend the role they have played in the evolution of history in the 20th century and their projection into the 21st. CREATIVITY Develop an understanding of different aspects which come together in the creative process. Learn about methodology used by creatives in an agency in order for the students to develop their own creative capacity. SOUND I Examine the importance of sound and provide the necessary digital tools for boosting sound possibilities in an audiovisual environment. Theoretical and practical principles for producing audio signals. POST PRODUCTION II Students are provided with the necessary digital tools to edit and post-produce an audiovisual piece. ANIMATION II Broaden the knowledge in the study of movement logics and the relation between space and time, putting different animation techniques into practice. MULTIMEDIA I Reproduce traditional art techniques through digital means. Promote experimentation with every available tool among students, so they find they own style. MULTIDISCIPLINARY WORKSHOP Workshops in which students work on different topics, to expand their creativity and increase the motivation. 12

DIGITAL COMMUNICATION III Broadening of knowledge on the necessary tools to conceptualize and design innovative multimedia applications. MOTION GRAPHICS Produce an efficient and appealing piece of visual communication through graphics in motion. MULTIDISCIPLINARY WORKSHOP Workshops in which students work on different topics, to expand their creativity and increase the motivation. POST PRODUCTION III Expansion ofthe knowledge on digital techniques and video post-production tools with the objective of achieving an advanced level. POST PRODUCTION IV Expansion ofthe knowledge on digital techniques and video post-production tools with the objective of achieving an expert level. SOUND II Promote students creative sound skills using digital tools in order to manipulate sound at an advanced level, for later application in audiovisual projects. MULTIMEDIA II Produce cartoons combining traditional theories with innovative digital tools based on real time vectorial animation. MULTIMEDIA III Provide the students with basic knowledge to apply visual effects. Recognize the potential of visual effects to create 2D special effects. 14
