2 Welcome from Chris Mitchell Principal of EUTC Welcome to our new mini prospectus You can find our full and interactive prospectus and course guides online at I am delighted to welcome your interest in EUTC. We are a new school, and indeed a new kind of school, and a specialist 6th form centre. We are developing real momentum as a national leader in Multimedia and Production Arts and securing excellent outcomes for our studenvts. I realise of course that the principal s welcome in a college prospectus is always going to be a sales pitch to some extent and obviously perfection is a myth... but I am proud to be able to say with confidence that EUTC makes a powerful contribution to mainstream comprehensive, and post 16, education and I encourage you to come, look round and make an appointment to visit during college time too. I am genuinely sure that you will find our staff to be industry credible and authentic practitioners in their subjects and that our students are happy and well engaged learners with passion for this area of creative industry. Our cultural landscape is changing rapidly and technology is putting young people right at the centre of this change. The single most important factor in seeing young people achieve highly in this context is that they study something they love and value and that they feel safe, well liked and confident in their learning community. As a school, we offer learners aged 14 to 19 a different kind of education to mainstream secondary schools. Firstly we are a specialist University Technical College so the learning environment is grown up. Students will need to have a passion for our specialisms, be personally motivated and ready to work a longer college day. They will learn how to be professional and employable and how to learn flexibly as technology is media arts practice is evolving everyday in our industry. For our part, we will provide inspiring, creative and practical learning experiences where young people will have opportunities not available at many other mainstream secondary schools including working with our industry partners on professional production briefs. Our Sixth Form College is where our specialist offer really comes into its own. Students are able to select courses from a highly credible list of both academic and professionally recognised qualifications. Our status as a university college, partnered by the University of Hertfordshire means that our access to higher education and further learning guidance is high quality. Our practical and industry relevant subjects achieve very high results and even though we are only in our 4th year, we have already seen our alumni go on to study and work in exciting and prestigious organisations. The curriculum provides students with a wealth of opportunities to combine academic study with creativity to gain high-quality skills that meet the expectations of the [film, theatre and television] industry. [OFSTED 2015] In addition to our courses, students get opportunities to be student leaders, mentors and to work for our own in house media production company where we run a slate of real industry productions including for MOBO, the British Library, Team Margot and Elstree Studios. So far, student artwork and media productions have been nationally broadcast on ITV, won regional film festivals, come top three nationally in App design and been published in lights at Piccadilly Circus. The media arts college of the future GCSE Photography This stunning image comes from Amber, a young photographer with a highly attuned awareness of aesthetic composition. Amber is now studying Photography with us at Post 16. As a University Technical College, we specialise in behind the scenes multimedia and technical arts. Our curriculum is designed to ensure strong foundations in fundamental academic subjects and build on these with vocational, expressive and industry relevant studies. We support our taught curriculum with our extended projects offer. Our industry partners, along with our own media production company provides opportunities for students to experience working in the technical arts and culture industry.

3 Communications The Communications faculty aims to inspire students through the exploration of creative and academic elements with strong teaching and learning. Students are encouraged to focus on the meaning created within a text, whether that be literature, poetry, plays, films or media productions. Together the subjects of English, Film, Media and Drama strengthen student s literacy and communication skills as well their cultural understanding. We aim to make connections between the broader subjects offered at EUTC by supporting and inspiring students to realise their creative, academic and professional potential. Subjects: English Literature, English Language, Media Studies, Film Studies, Creative Media Production, Drama. English (KS4) Students study DNA by Denis Kelly Seb operates a camera for his KS5 Media Studies production. Maths and Natural Sciences Our curriculum enables our students to build deep and transferable knowledge, skills and understanding for a future career in science, engineering and technology, including those employment sectors that support and underpin the media production industries such as design, special effects and production infrastructure. We offer support to students as they gain new knowledge and challenge all Maths and Science learners to aim higher. Our intervention classes have supported students to achieve results in Maths which are considerably above the national average. Maths is now one of the most popular A Levels in the country. It consists of 4 core modules and 2 chosen modules that build on GCSE Maths applying practical and theoretical analysis to real world challenges. Expressive Arts Expressive Arts at Elstree UTC offers learners a range of fresh and forward looking courses chosen to inspire and develop the imagination. All courses are designed to promote a sense of discovery and enjoyment as students progress their skills. They will develop self-confidence and an ability to communicate original ideas in a range of media whilst developing their knowledge of the Art World and the myriad of opportunities available in this field. Through discussion and exploration, students will understand what Art can be in the 21st Century and this will inspire learners start them on a path towards realising professional standards. Students learn to critique their creative works and to challenge themselves to explore and innovate in the field of creative and expressive arts. Entertainment Technologies Our Culture is full of Design! Creative development of technology within the entertainment industries is a rapidly growing sector. We have grouped together some of the subjects that lead the way with emerging technology, engaging with special effects, app development, game design, light, set and sound. Learning from industry standards and developing students to have the professional ethos to match a keen understanding of the business. We run a range of courses that develop skills and understanding through practical opportunities, this is supported by wider study of the sector. Career progression can be direct to industry or onward to higher education. 4 Projects Our strong Projects team facilitates a range of courses and extra curricular opportunities. We have a wide offer available across many subjects for those that excel in their studies or those who simply want to add breadth to their learning. We have a unique timetable with built in time that encourages meaningful clubs. Last year EUTC was placed in the top 10 in the Royal Navy engineering project, top 3 in the country for Apps for Good design, a connection we are building on this year. We produced slow motion videos for science week and many students entered media and film competitions resulting in awards for Best Look, Best Sound and Best Actress thanks to tutor dedication and encouragement. Every year we have performances, large and small where students from Makeup, Costume and Stage Management come together to produce high-quality shows. Tutors work with learners to build up their ability to lead in the areas of interest, this often links to Distinction level Btec grades and prepares learners for involvement in industry projects. Partnerships The ethos of EUTC is built around the excitement of the visual and creative arts, and an enthusiasm for the supporting technologies. The Projects and Partnerships department work with many partners including the BBC, MOBO, Elstree Studios and many community organisations and charities. Students work as members of a crew on industry briefs gaining the transferable skills to tackle the challenges of beginning a career in the multimedia production, digital communications and entertainments industry. This hands on training enables a real and meaningful experience for students, providing them with a foot in the door. Our links with Industry Professionals continue to grow, having had Directors, Producers, Musicians and Artists deliver talks to our students offering unique insight into industry practice. These talks are essential to inspiring our students to realise their dream careers aren t far way - opening their eyes to the endless job opportunities this industry has to offer with hard work and dedication.
