2 ARTS & ACADEMIC PROGRAM 1st Semestre Welcome to our new BFIS Arts & Academic Program, offering courses at Elementary and Middle and High School level in Languages, Cinema, Arts & Crafts, Math Club, and Photojournalism among others. Our courses are designed to inspire students, enhance learning, develop skills and enjoy! All teachers involved in the BFIS Arts & Academic Program are talented and experienced professionals dedicated to motivating and bringing out the best in individuals. As you read through this brochure you will find more information about each of our courses. 4 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ARTS Photojournalism Grade 4-5, Thursday 4:15-5:15 pm This year in photojournalism, students will participate in a variety of activities that will help build an understanding of photography concepts. Students will create and manage their own online portfolio, participate in several photo shoots, and learn some basic photo editing techniques, and finally participate in an end of semester Photo Gallery in December. Students will need to have their own digital camera. Arts and Crafts Grades 1-3, Monday 4:15-5:15 pm This course gives students a unique opportunity to explore and develop their creativity and imagination. They will develop their artistic skills and learn hoe to make a variety of arts and crafts that can be taken home and used for some of our theatrical performances. This program will be offered by teachers from BFIS. Ceramics Grades 3-5, Days and time arranged with teacher Price first semester: TBD If interested in Ceramics please contact our Elementary Art Teacher Tiffany Emerick for information on private and small group tutorial sessions. Contact details: tiffanye@bfischool.org ACADEMICS French Club Grades K-5 Mondays: 4:15-5:15 pm French club develops students language skills in speaking, reading and writing. The students learn about the French culture and enjoy a variety of songs and stories. Students are motivated using fun and creative games and ideas. Chinese All ES Grades, Mondays 4:15-5:15 pm This is a program designed by the Confucius Institute of Barcelona which aims to integrate and facilitate Chinese language teaching in schools. Through play, stories, songs and knowledge of Chinese culture, children acquire not only a new language but also the key to a world of possibilities for the future. This program will be offered by native teachers with extensive experience in teaching Chinese from the Confucio Institute. Dutch Tutoring For Native Speakers From 6-8 years old: Days depending on interest, 4:15-6:15 pm From 9-12 years old: Thursday 4:15-6:15 pm From years old: Wednesday 4:15-6:15 pm Price first semester: TBD Minimum 5 children per class This activity is offered to native or near native Dutch Language speakers. Dutch teachers are from the well respected Oranjedijkschool in Barcelona. 5 MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL ARTS ACADEMICS Self-defense Jiu Jitzu All Grades MS/HS, Thursday 4:15-5:15 pm (GIRLS) Thursday 5:15-6:15 pm (BOYS) This is a self defense course which not only emphasizes on effectively learning simple and practical martial techniques for real situations of confrontation, but also on transmitting values of respect, humility, discipline, and perseverance. It also instills a calm and balanced attitude that facilitates decision making in adverse circumstances. Cinema All MS/HS Grades Tuesdays 4:15-5:15 pm This course is a fantastic opportunity for students to learn and develop skills in cinema production. Students will learn about how to use special effects, sound compositing, camera movements, color correction, title effects and much more! They will work towards making their own short film. Math Club All Grades MS/HS Monday 4:15-5:15 pm Price: 185 This activity will prepare students for the Middle, Junior and Senior Mathematics ISMTF (International Schools Mathematics Teachers Foundation) competition. A multiple of three club members from High School and Middle School will be selected to represent BFIS in the corresponding competition. The club will involve one after school session to practice logic reasoning and problem solving strategies. Our Math program will be offered by teachers from BFIS, Chinese All MS/HS Grades, Monday or Wednesday 4:15-5:15 pm This is a program designed by the Confucius Institute of Barcelona which aims to integrate and facilitate Chinese language teaching in schools. 8 TEACHERS AND INSTRUCTORS Tiffany Emerick Tiffany began her career in 2004 when she received a BA in studio art and art history from St. Mary s College in Maryland focusing on drawing, printmaking and mixed media arts. In December of 2007 she completed a nationally accredited teacher certification program at Metropolitan State College in Colorado. In 2011 she graduated with a Master of Science in Visual Arts Education at The State University of New York at New Paltz where she focused in ceramics. Tiffany is in her fourth year of being in Barcelona and teaching K-5 Art at BFIS. This year she will be also offering Ceramics to students in grades 3-5. During each weekly session, students will learn to use learn basic hand building techniques including pinch, slab and coil and will glaze and fire all of their projects. Projects will include mugs, picture frames, jewelry, clay food, mini-houses, wind chimes and more! Karina Jackson Karina was born and raised in the beautiful Loire Valley, in Tours, France. She also lived in London for 6 years before moving back to France, in Paris. She is a dedicated BFIS teacher who enjoys teaching her native language to students and sharing her knowledge of French culture. Jim Conner This is Jim s 3 rd year at BFIS. He is originally from Arizona, where he grew up traveling with his family into Mexico, and taking pictures along the way. He has taught photojournalism now for 3 years as an after school activity. Albert Julvé Albert s passion is to challenge the laws of image, because to him that's the only way one can get to create something new. He s got a degree in Communication Studies and completed a master in Film Photography Direction. Albert is a BFIS Alumni student dedicated to inspiring young people to learn the skills and develop a passion in cinema.
9 TEACHERS AND INSTRUCTORS Alex Wells Alex is found in the early years part of school, and she has been a teaching associate for four years with a really creative approach to teaching; she loves to explore art with children, creating exciting spaces and building projects that develop children s expression of self. She has worked for the last four summers on art based projects and courses with children up to Middle School age. She has a strong interest in arts and completed a diploma in fine arts after leaving High School. Jesús Espelta Jesus began his training in Kung Fu in 1979 and then continued with kick boxing and Jiu Jitsu. He has trained and teaches at MMA and Gracie Academy Barcelona. He has obtained his black belt and has been four times champion of the Spanish Jiu-jitsu 70Kg category. He also works as a security guard for clubs and Hotel Arts in Barcelona.
