2 BACKGROUND DE MARGHERITI - WANG - AIE GRANT John De Margheriti and Steve Wang are 1980 Hawker College alumni who are leaders in the fields of computer games and software development. It is their desire to encourage and recognise the very best and brightest Hawker College students. Each year, for up to ten years (2021), Hawker College will be provided with a $20,000 cash grant to be used by Hawker College for the purchase of technology or software that will enhance and help Hawker College deliver its digital media programs. Hawker College will need to demonstrate each year that the money has been broadly fully spent in these areas to be eligible to receive further yearly grants. This amount will be provided to Hawker College by the first week of February each year. AIE SCHOLARSHIPS Hawker College will be provided with two scholarships, currently valued at $16,500 each, for study at the Academy of Interactive Entertainment Canberra in These scholarships are to be awarded at Hawker College s discretion, every year, for up to two graduating Year 12 students. The Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE) is Australia s leading school for game programming, game art, 3D animation and visual effects for film. The scholarship is intended to cover a full-year s course fees for one of the following programs: Specialising in Game Art & Animation - Specialising in Game Programming - Specialising in Game Design & Production Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media - Specialising in 3D Animation and Visual Effects Bachelor of Games and Virtual Worlds (Programming) DEENTREPRENEURSHIP MARGHERITI - WANG PRIZE FOR More information on each of these programs is on page 4 of this document. This prize is worth $2,500 and is intended to assist the entrepreneurial activities of one or more Year 11 or 12 students working together on a single project while they are students of Hawker College. The Bachelor of Games and Virtual Worlds (Programming) is a three year degree with units delivered by AIE and units delivered by CIT. Students can use the scholarship towards 6 AIE units of study, equivalent to a year s study, in the Bachelor of Games and Virtual Worlds (Programming). This prize will be administered by Hawker College. A specially created Hawker College committee and is to be awarded by the school s Principal. This prize may be given at any time of the year the P&C desires and will be paid to the P&C within 14 days of receipt of notification by Hawker College that they have chosen a recipient. Evidence is to be provided that the monies have been fully spent in the establishment of a micro business activity, and any amounts not spent will be carried over into the following year and subtracted from the ensuing year s overall allotment. DE MARGHERITI - WANG ACADEMIC PRIZES The following prizes may be awarded to either the top Year 11 or Year 12 student in each category at each year s graduation at the Principal s discretion: DE MARGHERITI - WANG PRIZES FOR DIGITAL DESIGN - $500 ( 2 awards) DE MARGHERITI - WANG PRIZE FOR MATHEMATICS - $500 DE MARGHERITI - WANG PRIZE FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY - $500 The scholarship is indexed against a full-year s course fees and will increase to match the course cost per year. The Advanced Diploma courses are two year programs and the scholarship will cover the first year s course fees. Remaining course fees can be covered with VET FEE-HELP, an interest free student loan scheme for Vocational Education and Training students. All students who complete study of the Advanced Diploma or Bachelor level study at the Academy of Interactive Entertainment are eligible to apply for the AIE Incubator Program. 3 Specialising in Game Art & Animation Candidate selection procedures Game artists design the environments, create the characters and craft the vehicles for the games that you love to play. They can specialise in modelling, texturing, animation and level design. Game art development is a dynamic medium to showcase your creative ability. You ll work with other artists and programmers to design and create your own unique entertainment experience using cutting-edge game technology. The, specialising in Game Art and Design, has been developed in response to industry needs and runs for two years, full-time. Below is the candidate selection procedure for the De Margheriti - Wang AIE scholarships. This procedure has been created to aid colleges in their selection of the most appropriate student or graduate. Specialising in Game Programming Step 1 College nominations due 1st November Game Programmers drive the game development process; creating the framework, functionality and interaction in the game. As the essential ingredient in the development process, game programmers are highly valued and continually in demand. The Advanced Diploma of Professional Game Development specialising in Game Programming, has been developed in response to industry needs and runs for two years, full-time. Specialising in Game Design & Production Game designers are the visionaries and evangelists for a game development project. They thrive on new ideas and are always thinking about how users will interact and enjoy the experience that they ve created. A great game designer possesses a combination of technical knowledge, artistic skill and most importantly, the ability to communicate and understand people. Game designers spend significant amounts of time writing detailed documents specifying game mechanics, environments, playable characters and the game s nemesis. This detail extends right down to how a particular item might behave, be animated and sound. The Game Design stream of the is a two year, full-time course written by experienced game designers, in consultation with local and international studios, to produce innovative graduates who will lead the next generation of game development. Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media Specialising in 3D Animation and Visual Effects The Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media is a two year, full-time course which is designed to get graduates into the world of film, TV or visual effects. It is a practical course designed to give the best technical training using the latest, state-of-the-art technology. This course has been written in consultation with leading film and visual effects studios, enabling students to complete impressive film projects that showcase their skills and create a professional show-reel to impress potential employers. Bachelor of Games and Virtual Worlds Programming The Bachelor of Games and Virtual Worlds (Programming) is a 3 year degree focused on producing graduates for the simulation, virtual worlds and games industries. The degree program is designed to provide professional game programmers with the skills and knowledge of a computer science degree contextualised by gaming applications as well as core skills in programming and design. The procedure is completed in three steps (explained below). The procedure is concluded with the college making the final decision which students will receive the grant. The college will nominate a shortlist of candidates, or can ask students to nominate themselves (see form on page 7). To aid the college in this initial selection, a description of the skills, interests and aptitudes that can indicate a successful AIE graduate can be found on page 6 of this document The college will compile a short list of nominees to send to AIE. This will include looking at a portfolio of the students work. AIE teaching staff will then rank the nominees. The ranking will be a reflection of who AIE consider most likely to be successful. The ranking of the nominees will be sent back to the college. Step 3 College selection After receiving the ranking advice from the AIE teaching staff and with the colleges own knowledge of the nominees, the college will be in a position to make the most informed decision on the scholarship winners.

Nominees should be able to finish a creative project and receive feedback in a constructive manner. Programming-specific courses Programming Ability: Software development candidates would benefit from previous knowledge of programming. All languages are relevant; however C++, C# and Java are highly valued. Technical ability: Nominees for the software development course should have strong mathematical skills coupled with the ability to understand and solve complex logic problems. Designing skills: Design candidates should have well accomplished communication skills and the ability to work well with a diverse group of individuals. Group leadership and project management techniques as well as creativity in writing are highly desirable skills.
