3 1.0 Using your Laptop on the University Network You may use your own Laptop on the University network There are both wired and wireless access points within the University. Wired points are available in the LISB (Library). From one of the public network points you are limited to the following ITD services: Web Browsing Your University The Student Records system Help is available every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday between 14:30 and 15:30 at the Laptop Desk Connection in the LISB (Library). A registration form has to be completed Important: The bringing in of a Laptop computer and connecting it to the University Network is a very high security risk to the University. You must have your computer patched with the latest security patches and running an anti-virus program with the latest protection files. Network Cables are available for purchase in the Student's Union Shop Information for Wireless & Fixed Point (Wired) Network Access from Outside the University and Fixed Public Network Access Points within the University Wired (fixed) points are available in the LISB Wireless Access point locations are available from: Page 3 of 18

4 Follow the Guidelines below to access the computer resources at the University: Gain access to the Internet from any of the following Internet connection at Home (perhaps broadband or dial-up) Public Network access point on campus (a wireless access point or a wired (fixed point) connection point in the student village), Internet café Public Wireless access point, e.g. at an airport 3G connection on your smart phone. 1.1 How to Configure a Windows Vista/7/8 computer for Access to a Public Network (wired internet connection) including Student Villages To gain internet access on campus, find a public desk in the library labelled for use by laptops. The desks that are setup for laptop internet access will have a network cable. Plug this cable into the appropriate connection in your laptop. It will look like a phone connection (but larger). Please remember that when unplugging this cable there is a button clip that needs to be pressed when disconnecting 1.2 Configuring Windows Vista / Win 7 to Access UL Wireless Network 1 Click the Start button Page 4 of 18

6 4 Under the heading Network and Sharing Center click Connect to a network 5 A list of wireless networks should appear, click ulwireless and then click connect 6 A warning will be displayed ulwireless is an unsecured network click Connect Anyway 7 Click the two check boxes Save this network and Start this connection automatically 8 You should now be connected Page 6 of 18

7 1.3 Configuring Windows 8 to Access UL Wireless 1) Select desktop mode by moving mouse pointer to bottom left of screen and singleclicking, you can return to tile mode the same way. 2) Double-click wireless icon (located on bottom-right of desktop screen, see red arrow) 3) The Networks sidebar will open to right of screen. 8 4) From the menu select ulwireless and then click connect at the bottom. 5) If this is the first time connecting to ULWireless, you may be asked to turn on network sharing. As this is an unsecured public network, you are strongly advised to Turn off sharing. Secect 1 st option in this case. 1.4 Troubleshooting Wireless Networking Setup If you do not get Internet access having followed the above steps read the following information. Are you in an area of the campus that has Wireless Connectivity? Wireless Access point locations are available from: Page 8 of 18

9 Is your Wireless Card switched on? If you wireless card is switched on you should see an icon on the bottom of your screen. The different network connectivity icons represent different wireless states depending in which state your Wi-Fi is set to. Wireless Off State Wireless networks Available Wireless network connected. 10 1.4.1 Enable / Re-Enable the Wi-Fi Adapter in Windows 7/8 Sometimes it is advisable to disable the wireless adapter if the laptop is to be used with a wired ethernet connection. The Wi-Fi connection needs to be reenabled afterwards if Wi-Fi connectivity is required. 12 1.4.1 Enable / Re-Enable the Wi-Fi Adapter on Windows XP Right click on My Network Places icon on the desktop Click on Properties Right Click on the Wireless Network Connection icon Select Disable Wait 10 seconds Right Click on the Wireless Network Connection icon. Select Enable When Enable is selected you should see Acquiring IP Address. Wait till this message is gone and try Internet Access again Starting the Wireless Zero Configuration Wizard (XP) 1) Click on Start 2) Click on Settings 3) Click on Control Panel 4) Click on Administrative Tools 5) Click on Services 6) Scroll down the list of services Page 12 of 18

13 7) Double click Wireless Zero Configuration entry 8) Make sure that startup type is AUTOMATIC 9) Click on Stop 10) Click on Start 11) Click on Apply 12) Click on OK 13) Close the windows Check the IP Address 1) Click on the Start button 2) Click on Run 3) Type ipconfig and press enter Page 13 of 18

14 4) An IP of 169.xxx.xxx.xxx in the wireless card IP address means your computer is not picking up a correct IP address. 169.xxx.xxx.xxx is an IP address Windows gives when it can t acquire an IP. There is probably a problem with the connection itself rather than with your PC or laptop Check your IP settings 1) Click on the Start button 2) Click on Control Panel Page 14 of 18

15 3) In Control Panel Window, Click Switch to Classic View 4) In Control Panel Window (Classic View) choose Network Connections Page 15 of 18

16 5) Identify the appropriate icon for your wireless network connection. It is usually called Wireless Network Connection 6) Right-click Wireless Network Connection and select Properties 7) The image below shows a typical Wireless Network Connection Properties panel with some network components already installed. Some of them might not be there on your computer. Equally, you might have some components installed, which are not shown in the image. Page 16 of 18

17 8) Ensure that you are working on the correct panel by checking that the name shown under Connect using is your wireless adapter 9) [Option: if you do not wish to share any of your files or printers with other computers, you may improve the security of your computer by removing the tick in the check-box for File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks] 10) The component Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) must be present and shown with a tick in the check box. If it is not present, click Install, select Protocol and click Add, Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click OK ]. If it is not checked with a tick, click on the box to check it now. 11) Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) with a single click, and then click the button Properties Page 17 of 18

18 12) Select Obtain an IP address automatically Select Obtain DNS server address automatically How to Print from a Laptop 1. Click on Start button 2. Select Run and type \\payprint64.ul.campus 3. Click on OK 4. In the next dialog box, you will need to enter your Username and Password Your Username should be preceded with UL\ 5. The list of available printers will be displayed. To set your default printer - right click on the Printer name and choose Set as Default Page 18 of 18
