1 Description of Problem How do I join the Brother machine to an Adhoc Wireless Network? Description of Solution An Ad-hoc network allows each wireless device to communicate directly with each other. There is no central Access Point or router controlling communication. Ad-hoc devices are only able to communicate with other Ad-hoc devices, they are not able to communicate with any Infrastructure devices (Devices on a network with a central access point), or any other devices connected to a wired network. In addition, Adhoc mode security is less sophisticated compared to an Infrastructure mode network. Ad hoc mode is only recommended as a temporary connection. For permanent connections we recommend Infrastructure mode via a router. To use your Brother machine in an ad hoc network, complete the steps listed below: CONFIGURING THE BROTHER MACHINE 1. Plug the AC power cord into an AC outlet and turn the power switch on. 2. If the Brother machine was previously configured for wireless connection the network settings need to be reset before the unit can be configured for new wireless settings. Complete the following steps to reset the Network Card. NOTE: Resetting the network card will erase all current network settings. a. Press Menu on the Touchscreen. b. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to display and select Network. c. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to display and select Network Reset. d. Press Yes. e. Press and hold Yes for two seconds. The machine's network card will be reset. 3. Set the network interface to WLAN. a. Press Menu on the Touchscreen. b. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to display and select Network.

2 c. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW Key to display and select WLAN ENABLE. d. Press ON. 4. After about a minute, the Brother machine will obtain an IP address. CONFIGURE THE COMPUTER'S WIRELESS NETWORK CONNECTION Before beginning, ensure that you are logged in with admin rights. 1. In order to communicate with the Brother machine, you will need to configure the computer's wireless network card with the following settings from the Brother machine: Communication Mode: Ad-hoc Channel: 11 (if applicable) Network Name/SSID (Case Sensitive): SETUP Encryption: None 2. Complete the following steps based on the computer's Operating System: Macintosh Users Windows XP Users Windows Vista Users Windows 7 Users Windows 8 Users A. MACINTOSH USERS: Click the Airport icon in the top right of the File Menu and select SETUP. NOTE: Macintosh Users may have to reconnect to SETUP after each computer restart in order to communicate over the Ad-Hoc network.

WINDOWS XP USERS: You may be able to temporarily change the wireless settings on the PC following the steps below: NOTE: If the following options are unavailable, refer to the computer's wireless card manual for instructions to change the wireless settings to match STEP 1. Make sure to note the original wireless settings in case you need to restore them. Click Start => Control Panel => Network Connections. Right click Wireless Network Connection then click View Available Wireless Networks. In the list click on the name of the Brother Ad-Hoc network. The default name is SETUP.

4 Click CONNECT Click CONNECT ANYWAY. Your Brother Machine and computer are now joined through an Ad-Hoc connection. C. WINDOWS VISTA USERS: You may be able to temporarily change the wireless settings on the PC following the steps below: NOTE: If the following options are unavailable, refer to your wireless card manufacturer's instructions on changing the wireless settings to match STEP 1. Make sure to note the original wireless settings in case you need to restore them. Click Start => Connect To

5 A list of currently available Networks will appear. In the list click on the name of the Brother Ad-Hoc network. The default name is SETUP. Click CONNECT. If you receive a warning that the network is unsecured, click CONNECT ANYWAY. You will receive a message stating: Successfully connected to Setup. Check Save This Network and click CLOSE.

6 Your Brother Machine and computer are now joined through an Ad-Hoc connection. NOTE: Windows Vista users must reconnect to SETUP after each computer restart in order to communicate over the Ad-Hoc network. D. WINDOWS 7 USERS: You may be able to temporarily change the wireless settings on the PC following the steps below. NOTE: If the following options are unavailable, refer to your wireless card manufacturer's instructions on changing the wireless settings to match STEP 1. Make sure to note the original wireless settings in case you need to restore them. Click Start => Control Panel => Network And Internet => Network And Sharing Center Click on Connect To a Network. A list of currently available Networks, both wired and wireless, will appear. In the list click on the name of the Brother Ad-Hoc network. The default name is SETUP. Click CONNECT.

7 Wait a few minutes for the computer to connect. Your Brother Machine and computer are now joined through an Ad-Hoc connection. NOTE: Windows 7 users must reconnect to SETUP after each computer restart in order to communicate over the Ad-Hoc network connection. E. Windows 8 Users NOTE: If the following options are unavailable, refer to your wireless card manufacturer's instructions on changing the wireless settings to match STEP 1. Make sure to note the original wireless settings in case you need to restore them. Move your mouse to the Upper Right or Lower Right corner of the screen to display the Charms bar. Click Settings.

8 Click on the Networks icon. A list of available networks will appear. In the list click on the name of the Brother Ad-Hoc network. The default name is SETUP. Click Connect. Wait a few minutes for the computer to connect. Your Brother Machine and computer are now joined through an Ad-Hoc connection.

9 NOTE: Windows 8 users must reconnect to SETUP after each computer restart in order to communicate over the Ad-Hoc network connection.
