Outline 1. Background & RAL NRT system 2. EO4CDS pilot-project 3. Summary & forward look
XCH4 (ppm) 1. Background Ozone and methane important for climate Ozone important in air quality and health State-of-the-art schemes to retrieve tropospheric ozone and methane from UV and IR spectrometers Global ozone data for ESA CCI Global methane data IASI CAMS CAMS (with AK) Correlation IASI/CAMS
RAL / CEMS NRT System GOME-2 & IASI Level 1 data 24hr forecast Ozone & Methane (<3hr) MetOp near-real time chain established on JASMIN-CEMS initially for MetOp-A GOME-2 ozone Funded through NCEO and NERC EO Big Data grant Met forecast data from ECMWF & GOME-2 L1b data via Eumetcast Ozone data ingested by ECMWF/CAMS system
2. EO4CDS pilot-project - Objectives in FY15/16 a) Increase resilience of data acquisition system Procure, install & integrate new hardware b) Evaluate ozone data from MetOp-A GOME-2 NRT chain c) Demonstrate MetOp-B GOME-2 ozone NRT chain d) Demonstrate IASI methane data production in MetOp NRT chain
Lag (hr) Lag (hr) RAL / CEMS NRT System a) Increase resilience of data acquisition system Near Real Time processing of GOME-2(MetOp-A) ozone profiles has been running on JASMIN-CEMS successfully since March 2015 using Eumetcast EO4CDS: 2 nd Euemtcast receiver + Monitoring and catchup processing tools developed
RAL / CEMS NRT System b) Evaluate ozone data from MetOp-A GOME-2 NRT chain Data delivery stats from from Martin Suttie (ECMWF) - Lv1 data loss - Error trapping - Job management Linux c-shell bug + CEMS disk issue (while in China)
RAL / CEMS NRT System c) Demonstrate MetOp-B GOME-2 ozone NRT chain NRT Total Column Ozone (23 rd Feb 2016) GOME-2(A) GOME-2(B) CAMS Total column (DU) Assimilation trials started in CAMS on best effort basis ECMWF very keen to pursue further (staff recruitment) Offline data included in ERA-5
RAL / CEMS NRT System c) Demonstrate MetOp-B GOME-2 ozone NRT chain GOME2(A) GOME2(B) Lag G2A Lag G2B
RAL / CEMS NRT System d) Demonstrate IASI methane data production in MetOp NRT chain Methane map from 23 rd Feb 2016 from NRT data (Eumetcast IASI + ECMWF forecast) First NRT CH4 data product in the world!
XCH 4 (ppmv) XCH 4 Anomaly (ppmv) RAL / CEMS NRT System Example of Recent Detections (offline) LA Gas Leak Monthly-averaged XCH 4 (Oct 2015) Indonesian Fires XCH 4 Anomaly (Oct 2015)
3. Summary & Forward Look MetOp-A GOME-2 NRT pilot system established Monitoring statistics (RAL & ECMWF) indicate to be timely & reliable Early assessments indicate data quality to be reasonable MetOp-B GOME-2 system implemented & demonstrated Metop IASI methane system implemented & testing Next Steps: 1. MetOp Implement other planned improvements (eg. UV degradation correction) Implement RAL s IASI T, q, e, O 3 pre-processor in MetOp NRT chain Improvement on ECMWF forecast data for methane Improvement on GOME-2 only scheme for ozone Facilitate additional MetOp products also from UK/NCEO partners (UO,UL) Incorporate additional species (eg. CO) Data utilisation by CAMS and other operational users
3. Summary & Forward Look (contd) 2. Sentinel-5P/Suomi NPP CrIS - NRT 3. Particulates Major advance in spatial resolution and through co-located ir and shortwave obs for O 3, CH 4 & CO Adapt and implement GOME-2 & IASI schemes CrIS data available via Eumetsat, S5P via UK Sentinel Hub Demonstrate ORAC (cloud, aerosol/ash & surface) in NRT for MSG SEVIRI Adapt & demonstrate ORAC for Sentinel-3 Future missions: Sentinel-4/MTG and Sentinel-5/MetOp-SG C3S opportunities for UK-funded assets as well as O3 and Aerosol: a) RAL IASI CH4 processor developed in NCEO independently of CCI b) ORAC cloud - established in CCI, but C3S PIN does not include cloud 2010 RalSpace
