Wscasset, Watervlle & Farmngton Ralway Museum SHEEPSCOT STATON, ALNA, MANE September/October 996 Gee) w WW & F No. 9 and flatear 78 enterng Sheepscot Yards, October 9, 996. Larson Powell photo. Number 9 Returns to the Rals by Larson Powell After many months of careful preparaton, nvolvng hours and hours of work by Museum volunteers, Wscasset, Watervlle & Farmngton locomotve No. 9 backed out of the engnehouse and down the man lne under ts own power for the frst tme n roughly 60 years on October 9, 996, Wth W.W. & EF flatcar number 8 n tow, whch carred a small ar compressor that was hooked up to ts boler, No. 9 moved brskly through the yard at Sheepscot wth ts whstle blowng, ts bell rngng and ts beautful new reproducton headlght made by member Donald Dckey of Watervlle shnng brghtly. Although No. 9 was only able to move about 20) feet at a tme before pausng for a new charge of compressed ar, t put on qute a show, wth Jason Lamontagne at the throttle, Harry Percval frng (va the compressor) and James Patten as head brakeman. Sonja Wylle captured the scene on tape wth her camcorder and as she put tso aptly, confess had areal lump n my throat when No. 9 came out of the engnchouse. All of us who wtnessed the scene felt the same emoton and wshed that more of our members could have been present for the event. Ths makes all the hard work worthwhle, sad Bruce Wlson, who spent many hours wth our brush cutter trmmng the weeds and bushes along the rght of way to make No. 9 s debut as photogenc as possble. Our thanks to those volunteers who have done so much to put No, 9 n operatng order agan, ncludng Jason Lamontagne, Roscoe Woodman, Keth Taylor, Frank Menar, Zack Wylle, and Harry Percval. bo

Pror to the October 9th outng, No. 9 had been brefly moved out of the engnehouse late n the day on October 3th under ts own power to test ts readness for the more extensve move the followng weekend. Jason Lamontagne was also at the throttle for ths move whch only went to the manlne swtch and back. Roscoe Woodman s now contnung work on No, 9 s brake system and Jason has begun to study the locomotve's few suspenson and rear frame problems. The Board s also nvestgatng the cost and effort requred to receve and pass a full boler nspecton for possble later steam operaton but before ths can be done substantal further restoraton work wll be needed, The reproducton headlght mentoned above s a true beauty and adds enormously to No. 9"s appearance. t was made ths summer by Donald Dckey, as mentoned, along wth hs son, Randall Dckey, aded by Bruce Page of the Belfast and Moosehead Lake Ralroad n Belfast and Frank Roy of the Gulford Transportaton shop n Watervlle, Mane. We wll have an artcle by Mr. Dckey descrbng hs work for the Mane Central n our next ssue. Another major donaton receved recently was a huge Prentce engne lathe donated by Mke McClure of Nashua, New Hampshre, and Jm Bronson. The lathe can be used for wheel turnng and other major work and s now restng Bay 2 of the engnehouse, where t wll be placed on a foundaton very shortly. Our thanks to Mke and Jm for ths magnfcent gft, whch s descrbed elsewhere n the newsletter n an artcle by Bob Allen. Meanwhle, our ral layng s movng ahead at a full clp. Nearly,300 feet of manlne ral s now n place, thanks to Jason Lamontagne and hs hard workng crew of Frank Paul, James Patten, Fred Morse, John Bradbury and others. Another 700 feet or so of the orgnal roadbed had been scraped and levelled and snce we have enough tes, ral and stone ballast on hand, we expect another feet of track to go down ths fall, weather permttng. Wth recepts from our 996 fund rasng letter now approachng $7,000, we wll be able to plan and execute an exctng year of progress n 997, We are workng on plans to acqure more motve power, expand the Museum s exhbts, restore the boxcar and possbly buld a replca of a W.W. & F. caboose, usng orgnal plans, so the months ahead should be buser than ever. New Prentce lathe rests n Bay 2 of engnehouse on flatcar 8, September 996. Photo by Jason Lamontagne

New Lathe Arrves by Bob Allen The newly-acqured Prentce engne lathe for our museum was donated by Mke McClure and Jm Bronson. These two gentlemen saved the lathe from a scrap ple to use n ther busness (Ralroad Supply). They found the lathe just before the scrapper s sledge hammers were gong lo be used to destroy the machne. Mke and Jm dsassembled the machne, loaded t on a flatbed traler and took t to Mke s basement shop where they commenced to unload t, After unloadng the easy-to-carry peces, they sat down on the lawn to take a break and bewlderedly watched as the bed of the lathe, by tself, sld off the traler, went through the shop door and came to rest almost exactly where they wanted t, The amazng thng s that the 30-nch wde bed went through the 3-nch openng and never touched ether sde of the doorway! When the lathe was beng removed from the shop for the W.W. & F. Ralway Museum by M.A. Crowley Truckng of Frankln, New Hampshre, t dd not come out of the shop as easly t went n. The lathe agan had to be dsmantled to be shpped to Alna where t was loaded on the flatcar to be moved nto the engnehouse and stored untl a foundaton for the machne s poured, Mke has volunteered to help wth the reassembly of the lathe when t s n place. The lathe wll be used for ral wheel turnng and other mantenance necesstes of the museum, Our sncere thanks to Mke and Jm for the donaton of the lathe to the museum. Wthout the generosty of people lke them, t would be dffcult for the museum to contnue wth ts work. (See photo on Page 2) Fund-Rasng Update by Larson M. Powel Our most sncere thanks to all those members and frends of the Museum who have contrbuted to our 996 fund-rasng campagn. As of October 3, 996, we have receved a total of $6,850 toward our goal of $8,500 and more contrbutons are arrvng daly. We are confdent that we-can reach our goal before long. Shuttle Davd Serack Robert and Marca Reed W.W. & F. Musng No. 28 by Ells Walker Those of you who were readng the Newsletter back n prehstorc tmes when ths column frst started may remember tha n Musng No., sad there were questons about day-to-day operatons on the W.W. & F, that had not been satsfactorly answered n the publshed lterature. n subsequent Musngs have rased some of these questons

n hopes someone had the answers. A few readers have wrtten n wth nformaton whch have recorded n prevous Musngs. The followng comments nclude addtonal nformaton whch partally answer some of the questons. n Musng No. 8 (Sep/Oct 992) dscussed the crossng between the W.W. & F. and the trolley at East Vassalboro and wondered how t was protected. Some tme later, whle lookng through the 907 report of the Mane Ralroad Commssoners, came across the followng order n connecton wth the locaton of the trolley lne between Augusta and Watervlle. We determne the manner and condtons of the crossng of the tracks of the Wscasset, Watervlle, and Farmngton Ralway to be as follows: The crossng shall be at grade, The Augusta and Watervlle Ralway shall provde proper crossng frogs, and shall pay all expenses of layng the same and shall pay all expenses of mantanng sad crossng, All cars on the sad Augusta and Watervlle Ralway shall be stopped wthn one hundred feet of sad crossng, and shall not cross sad tracks untl the conductor shall go forward to sad crossng and ascertan that the same s clear. At the tme Musng No. 8 was wrtten, guessed that the conductor flagged the car across the crossng, and for once was rght. n Musng No. 9 (Nov,/Dec. 994) talked about the W.W. & F, provdng transportaton to students along the lne and wondered f the trans made a specal stop n the upper yard opposte the hgh school and f school hours were talored to the W.W. & F. schedule. Part of the answer later found n Mrs. Wggns book Bg Dreams and Lttle Wheels. On page 83 n the frst edton she states that...the grls were allowed to leave school cach afternoon at two o'clock to catch the narrow gauge on ts return trp..., The queston of a specal stop n the yard for students s stll unanswered. Fnally, want to thank Fourtn Buc Powell of Rockland, Mane, for sendng me a copy of the W.W. & F's data from the 909 Mane Ralroad Commssoners Report. n Musng No. 25 (Mar/Apr. 996) had a graph of W.W. & F. passenger traffc for the years between 90 and 90 to show the affect of trolley competton, but was mssng the data for 909 and had to use a dotted lne estmate between 908 and 90. The actual passenger count for 909 was 25,360 whch was somewhat lower than the estmate of about 28,000 from the graph, So a lttle bt of lght has been shed on the subject of W.W. & F, operatons, but more questons stll reman unanswered. How dd the W.W. & F. nterchange less-carload freght wth the Mane Central (Musng No. Oct,/ Nov. 990)? How dd the Luther Lttle and the Hesper wnd up n the mud (Musng No. 6 Mar,/Apr. 992)? Was there a runaround track at Albon (Musng No. 0 Jan./Feb. 993)? Any answers out there? Team Track by Bruce Wlson Happy Autumn to all! m pleased to report that another carload of W.W. & F. Ralway Museum news has been set off on the Sheepscot team track. Let's wrestle open the old wooden doors and see what the contents look lke for ths ssue... On the front cover of the Sep/Oct 996 ssue of Narrow Gauge & Shortlne Gazette s a beautful taste of fall as the crew of a W.W. & F. mxed tran prepare to lfta car load of potatoes from a sdng n Palermo, Mane. Artst Gus Swanberg features engne No. 2 as she heads for the potato house swtch, n the background may be seen the depot where No. 2 s tran wats patently for the move to be completed. Let's return to our own freght shed fora moment. We ran short of space n the July/August ssue of our museum newsletter and ddn t get a chance to tell you about the beautful job our gang dd n fnshng the floorng and settng up dsplays. John Bradbury and Harry Percval brewed up a lnseed ol and commercal floor stan mxture, appled three coats of sealer to t and had t ready just n tme for openng day (the mornng of the Annual Pcnc). n addton to photographs of Sheepscot Staton and the Alna Center flagstop, Gordon Davs provded two vews of a W.W, & F. northbound freght haulng a strng of boxcars through Sheepscot n the 30 s. The four photos were reproduced from-the Davs Famly scrapbook and enlarged to " x 4" sze by our members Gary & Alce Smth who own the Bay State Color Lab n Hanover, Massachusetts. To complment the Davs Collecton, we dsplayed a famly scrapbook donated by the Estate of Elzabeth S, Sproul who was the daughter of W.W. & F. Ralway General Manager Sam Sewall. Next to the Sproul book was a photo collecton on loan by Bob & Kathy Belyea of Norwell, Massachusetts, The Belyea collecton of W.W. & F. depots and equpment shared counter space wth a large donaton of Mane narrow gauge paperwork and artfacts from Ed and Beth Glbert of Mont Vernon, New Hampshre. James Auman of Warren, New Jersey sent along a wonderful On? scale model that he made from scratch of the Head Tde water tank. An ol pantng of Head Tde staton and a southbound passenger tran standng at the platform was done by Wareham, Massachusetts member Channng Morse. Ken Hunnbell of Rehoboth, Massachusetts has gven us a good start on makng up a load for the next Tumer Center Creamery car that rolls through Sheepscot. Although t mght be a whle for ths to happen, Ken brought n sx mlk cans some of whch come from the G.W. Hausen farm on the Weary Pond Road n Whtefeld. Thomas H. Amold of Catonsvlle, Maryland, sent along four passes to the Baltmore & Oho RR Museum

where he works as a volunteer. Thomas s an operatng engneer and mantans the museum s Lafayette and Tom Thumb locomotves. Dave Nlsen, a member from Clarendon, Vermont, spent much of hs vacaton tme ths past August luggng tes, shovelng ballast and drvng spkes. As he came n from a hard day at the ralhead on the 24th he passed two crsp new $00 blls nto my hand. The look on hs face sad t all but nonetheless asked hm to confrm that he had fun, wll be back and wanted to upgrade hs membershp to Lfe. The answer yes! Aland Sally Hammond of Whtefeld, Mane, have completed overhaul and pantng of the four wooden double hung wndows that grace the second floor of the engnehouse. We are grateful for the long hours that went nto ths job and the prorty status that the Hammonds gave ths work, Movng up the lne now, we see that the secton house has been the recpent of some much needed lnseed oll on all trm boards, the door and the wndow slls. n addton the wndows have been renstalled and anew (old) door latch nstalled by John Bradbury. Thanks to Phlp H. Choate of E. Falmouth, Massachusetts, and Ells E. Walker of Concord, Massachusetts, who answered my request n the last newsletter for donaton of a tcket punch for use n valdatng membershp cards. One punch wll be used at Sheepscot for ralcar rders. Now here s ths ssue s request to our membershp... do we have a prnter n the ranks that would be wllng to pnt ckes! Please contact me f anyone can help wth ths. Answerng the call for donatons of postage stamps were Everett E. Tumer of Amherst, Massachusetts and Vllage Power Equpment Co., nc. owned by Charles R. Pdacks and located n Berln, Massachusets. These members provded enough postage to handle your secretary's outgong mal for a two month perod. Thank you bath! was pleased that Charles C. Lbby of Belfast, Mane, and Keth W. Pratt of Prnce Edward sland, Canada saw the wanted ad n the last Team Track column and sent along paper from the W.W. & F. Ralway. Charles donated an orgnal Form 20" whch s an Abstract of nterlne Wayblls Receved and a copy of a share of common stock sold to a Mr. A.G. Malcolm on January 4, 926. Two stock certfcate coupons from a Wscasset & Quebec bond were also ncluded. Keth sent a copy of a September 29, 930 W.W. & F. Arrangement of Tran Servce. A scaled down verson of the tmetable s shown on Page 6 and a full sze copy has been lamnated for dsplay n the freght shed. Fred. Morse of Phppsburg, Mane, has expanded our tool nventory wth a recent donaton of a Full set of 3/4" sockets, extensons and ratchet, Phlp E. Whtmore of Cape Elzabeth, Mane, s barely able to keep ahead of the ncomng donatons as he contnues constructon of shelvng n the engnehouse to organze everythng. We recognze that the frst step n organzng anythng s to drop l n the mddle of Phl's workbench! n spte of our help, Phl has managed to do a fne job on a shoe-strng budget too! Fred Bergmann of Alna, Mane, recruted hm last year, and Frank Eggert of Wenonah, New Jersey, spent hs vacaton tme wth us cuttng brush along the lne. Ths year on September 7th Frank spent a long day shovelng stone ballast. Ths work s nvaluable to us and we apprecate our members and vstors who nclude the muscum n vacaton plans. Frank told me before leavng that he goes along to the Acada State Park n Bar Harbor to do volunteer tral mantenance and mprovement work durng hs summer Wsls. Can you put these to good use? was the queston asked of me by Henry. Tnkham of Portland, Mane, ths past August. n each hand he held spotlessly clean ol cans that he stored away n hs garage, For now they rest on a purln n the freght shed, but wouldn't bea bt surprsed to see them both be approprated by a locomotve crew n the near future. The Fall Annual 2-Foot Meet wll be held by Mark Hall at the Frst Congregatonal Church at 59 Washngon Street, Whtman, Massachusets. Hours are 0:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. wth admsson at $5 per person. The W.W. & F, Ralway Museum wll have a dsplay table and show a tray of sldes ncludng scenes of the freshly logged grade on the Davs property taken n March and October shots of No. 9 runnng the manlne on compressed ar power. Contact Mark at (67) for nformaton. would lke to thank the crew at B.O.C, Gases n Hngham, Massachusetts, for contnung support of our project at Sheepscot Staton. Chuck Tower and Don Bongarrone have provded weldng and cuttng equpment along wth gases and lots of helpful advce to ths novce welder. A prevous lesson n safety and cuttng technque from Joe Mortland at A & M Weldng n E. Weymouth, Massachusetts, has allowed our outft use n reducng scrap metal, weld plate for track swtches, heat and straghten a bent swtch sland mast, burn out rusted track bolts and deck wth plate stecl, Bob Pane's tp car chasss. t's the lttle thngs that help make the W.W. & F. Ralway Museum look sharp and Zack and Sonja Wylle of Warren, Mane, contnue to be on the move wth no lmt of enthusasm. The two were browsng at an antque shop n Manchester, Mane, and located a green porcelan lghtng fxture near to a perfect match for three others that had been donated a few years ago by Bob and Kathy Belyea. The four fxtures have now been nstalled and wred up wth clear 00 watt bulbs that provde lghtng for the freght shed. Not only do the fxtures look the part but the ntensty s just rght to allow for the feel of the perod. Qute a sensaton was rased when Clarence Ballard delvered an antque wooden tool chest that was donated by Fred Bergner of Webster, Massachusetts. The sturdy footlocker appears to have been used by a shp's carpenter and bears evdence of havng some ralroad experence, too, as the remans of a Ralway Express Agency tag s attached to one sde, Wth the huge and heavy chest came several

wrenches and tools that wll fnd servce n our shop, and much hardware that wll prove useful among our many projects. Ells Walker passed me a copy of a newsletter publshed by the Frends of Bedford Depot Park, nc, and ttled Bedford Depot News." The 230 member Massachusetts group begns a seres on the two foot gauge Bllerca & Bedford Ralroad wth the October 996 ssue of ther newsletter, You may wrte to FB.D.P., George Dalrymple -Secretary/Treasurer, 3 Mac Road, Bedford, MA 0730, ndvdual membershps are $2 per year. As promsed, Zack Wylle and represented the W.W. &.F. at the September 5th Mane Narrow Gauge Ralroad Day at Boothbay Ralway Vllage. Over the course of the day each of us managed to escape from the dsplay table. We were able to vst wth Roger Wlson who ran a table representng the Mane Narrow Gauge Ralroad Co. & Museum n Portland and wth fellow members Matt and Martha Sharp representng ther Tran & Trooper Hobby Shop. We also observed Ron Golek and hs crew from the Downeast Ralroad Club n Brunswck, Mane, as they rana large H.O. scale module. The Downeast Ralroad Club are W.W. & F. members and understand that Frank Paul coerced Ron Golek nto comng down for a flatear rde at Sheepscot. When saw Ron at the museum, he had a lnng bar n one hand and a shovel n the other. Ever get your rde Ron? The Frst Natonal Bank of Damarscotta has donated the proceeds from an employee chartable program known as Casual fora Canse The partcpants donate to the program and are then allowed to dress n casual clothng for the workday. Angela Percval who s an employee of the bank and the wfe of Harry Percval s son Chrstopher entered OUr name 23.a group to consder for such adonaton. $ was rased to beneft us, Track Crew Report by Jason Lamontagne The progress at Sheepscot Staton has becn absolutely ncredble and say that wthout exaggeraton, Swtch #5, whch goes from the Bay 2 track to Bay 3, was completed n three weeks. Remember that Swtch # took about three months; ths swtch came out very well. Bob Allen machned the swtch ponts and Bruce Jhan of Connectcut machned the frog pont. We are grateful to both of these men as well as everyone else nvolved. Over the summer, John Bradbury had been recondtonng the tp car from the Ramsedell estate for servce. He recently fnshed ths massve project after havng to hand-ft new end walls for the body, Roscoe Woodman also put n consderable tme reparng the brake mechansm. Ths came just at the rght tme, Jeffrey Verney fnshed gradng the manlne roadbed for the next 300 feet of track about a month ago. Wth that, the panel track donated by Bob Pane was lad out ahead of the permanent track, and was joned wth jont bars fabrcated by Zack Wylle. Between a Sunday wth John, myself, and Harry Percval's daughter-n-law, Angela Percval, and the tack crew on the followng Saturday, a layer of sub-ballast a foot deep and 200 feet long was lad usng the new tp car. Ths was all leveled by hand. A few lengths of track have snce been lad on the manlne; the total s now up to 255 feet. t s obvous from ths artcle and the entre newsletter that a large number of people contrbuted to the Ralway. A great help to both the tack crew and to the ralroad n general are people who just come to help once or twce a year. Helpng for just one day may seem nsgnfcant, but beleve me t s not. n the summer there s nearly always someone n ths category addng to the regular crew on both Saturday's and Sunday s. One Sunday n August we receved help from Rchard Edln of New York. Each year we get help from Bob Amold of Texas, and several others from around the country. Ths help really makes a dfference and s greatly apprecated. Wscasset, Watervlle & Farmngton R y. Co.
