Our next Biennial congress is on track to be an outstanding scientific program. Thank you to all whose efforts are making this possible. So go to the WCET website, now and be part of this survey. Much of this issue of the BullETin relates what WCET nurses did on Norma N. Gill Day Thank you to all who sent in the details of how you celebrated our founder s birthday, 26 June. I was impressed with the large number of responses we got to learn of your efforts to recall Norma on her day. You will read about how nurses in France, Denmark, Kenya, Togo, China, Taiwan, Nepal, Indonesia, and Malaysia remembered Norma by special events. The stories are as diverse as our WCET members, I know you will enjoy them, including the poem written about Norma. WCET is also pleased to share with your how Shanti Bajracharya, an Enterostomal Therapist from Kathmandu, has updated us with her experience following the earthquake disaster in Nepal. An important mission of WCET is education. In this issue, you will learn more about the Kenyan Stoma Wound and Continence Nursing Education program, which has welcomed 15 students for its 2015 class. Please take time to read about other educational programs that have taken place around the WCET world. This includes a report on the European Council of Enterostomal Therapy and 6 th symposium of Stoma Nurses of Serbia, the 10 th Wound Care Annual Conference of the Swiss Association for Wound Care - Romande (French speaking section), and the Enterostomal Therapy Nurses Association of the Philippines. Remember that the future of our specialty depends on nurses who have the knowledge and education to care for patients. Merci à tous celles et ceux qui ont envoyés ces récits sur vos célébrations de l anniversaire de la fondatrice de notre spécialité, le 26 juin dernier. J ai été impressionnée par le nombre important de retours consacrés à vos efforts pour se rappeler de Norma en ce jour. Vous lirez ainsi comment des infirmières de France, Danemark, Kenya, Togo, Chine, Taiwan, Népal, Indonésie et Malaisie se sont souvenues de Norma en réalisant des interventions spécifiques. Ces écrits sont tout aussi variés que le sont nos membres du WCET. Je sais que vous allez les apprécier, y compris le poème écrit pour Norma. Le WCET est aussi heureux de partager avec vous l expérience de Shanti Bajracharya, Stomathérapeute de Katmandou, suite au terrible tremblement de terre qu il y a eu au Népal ; nous permettant ainsi de prendre la mesure de ce qui s est passé. Une mission importante du WCET est l éducation. Dans cette édition, vous en apprendrez plus sur le programme de formation en Soins de stomies, plaies et continence qui se tient au Kenya. Read more about these deals on the website: There are quite few airlines flying direct into Cape Town, otherwise you will fly via Johannesburg (OR Tambo International Airport). OR Tambo is a two hours domestic flight from Cape Town. The Cape Town International Airport is between 25 minutes and an hour s drive from the city centre (depending on the traffic). Peak traffic hours in Cape Town are in the mornings (into the city) from 06h30 08h30 and in the afternoon (leaving the city) from 16h00 18h00. Preparing for shopping in Cape Town: The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront ( is within walking distance of the CTICC as well as quite a few of the participating hotels. Cape Town is known for its markets. When going to a market such as a craft market or flea market, there are always bargains to be found. There are also quite a number of wonderful organic and food markets. There are markets open on a daily basis all over the city, surrounding areas and winelands. However, most of the popular markets are usually open on Saturdays and Sundays. Markets are usually not open in the evening; and on weekends they usually close at 14h BullETin October

6 2015 WCET Membership Survey The WCET invites you to participate in the 2015 WCET Membership Survey. The WCET surveys its members every 2 years. A survey is a good way to gather the opinions of our WCET members and to plan for the future. Questions about such things as Congresses, the Journal, the BullETin, the website and more are included in the survey. This survey has to be completed totally online: available on 1 May until Oct 15. Thanks to the efforts of WCET members, that you can take the survey in languages other than English including Chinese, French or Indonesian. Thanks for taking time to fill it out. Please let your voice be heard! June 26: Celebrations of the WCET Norma N. Gill DAY! Rose-Marie Pedrero, WCET ID France For this Celebration, we have done some pictures and demo to put forward the origin of Stomatherapy and its beginning in France as to bring to light part of our activities what services do not see. Appliances most used in the city, irrigation sets and documents provided to patients as of course gadgets and posters from the industries were shown. 7 We have done a MacGyver s corner with rings, sprays and a workshop on how to use paste. Very artificial flavour candies were given to participants to keep the party on. 40 people come to visit us between 13 and 16 o clock. Much of pharmacy preparers have asked us to see and touch the products we order from them. Finally, we will write a small article about this event that will be publish in our hospital newspaper. Nous avons fait le coin de Mac Gyver avec anneaux, sprays et surtout un atelier de pose de pâte. Pour garder un côté festif... des bonbons bien chimiques étaient à distribués aux visiteurs. 40 personnes sont passées entre 13h et 16h. Une grande partie des préparatrices en pharmacie se sont déplacées pour voir l utilisation des produits que nous leur demandons. I am celebrating her day in Denmark at MASCC (Multinational Association of Supportive Care), in cancer conference, presenting my abstract on integration of oncology onto palliative care as our majority of patients undertaking cancer treatment are referred for palliative care in late stage especially with fungating breast cancer wound. Actually, I am in Bamako (Mali). One thing I put to the credit of the occasion was to discuss with some colleagues about the speciality which is not known here. So to some nursing tutors of my school, I presented the speciality of stoma, wound and continence care and its development. What is the WCET and went through the WCET website with them to make an open way of getting more information about the speciality and its connections. Gill Day on June 26 is an important and special Day on which people pay attention to the treatment and rehabilitation of colostomy patients and colostomy therapist group. The continue education program at the national level The new progress of colostomy, wounds, and incontinence care and management study has been held as scheduled by the uropoiesis surgical department in Wuxi people s hospital of Jiangsu province. Students come from Jilin, Hebei, Henan, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangsu, and other cities. We have invited the Vice Principal of ET school in Sun Yat-Sen University Mrs. Zheng Meichun, the wound care center of general hospital of Nanjing military region Mrs. Jiang Qixia, the director of uropoiesis surgical department Mr. Hu Qiang and our three ET teachers Yang Xiaoyi, Jiang Xiaoqin & Zhu Lixia to take part in the training. This study covers the management of difficult wounds, new progress in the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers, the prevention and cure of complications after colostomy, the recent advances in the treatment of incontinence and all kinds of scale in colostomy, the application of the wound and incontinence patients, urinary colostomy and BullETin October

8 so on. Teachers use their abundant knowledge and rich theory to broaden students thought and encourage the students to look for more scientific research topic and essay inspiration. At the same time, the students not only gain the specialized knowledge, but also learn a lot of advanced management experience in the communication with experts. They think this study promote the level of the nurse in clinical and connotation. More patients will enjoy the result of this study. They speak enthusiastically and share their views in the active atmosphere. This study help the students update concepts and expand the field of vision. The importance is that teacher s philosophy with work is gradually to every student. It is necessary to work hard without complain, do your best and spread the positive energy in the way of success. The students have expressed that they are willing to apply the harvest of learning and enlightenment to the future work for providing colostomy patients with higher quality nursing service and further improving their management level to carry out nursing work better. Teachers and students involved in this continuous program done on the WCET Norma N. Gill Day Li Juyun, China June 26, 2015, WCET Norma N. Gill s day, Enterostomy Therapist Li Juyun assisted launching Colostomy People visiting project for Nanjing cancer patients association in Jiangsu Province Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, china. Since then, the colostomy people in Nanjing started the project of self management by stoma person visiting which was dominated by professional colostomy therapists from Nanjing local hospitals previously. The form was a group visiting, consisting of 6 volunteers with colon stoma, Ileum stoma or Urinary tract stoma trained and qualified by ET. Those junior stoma persons 2~6 weeks after surgery were visited. This event was supported by Dai Xin Juan, the director of the Department of nursing, Jiangsu Province Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital. She pointed out that, in the advocacy of quality care in today s practice, to carry out such extended care services for specialist nurses are the important manifestation of the care of nursing. Before stoma person visiting, ET Li Juyun introduced to the 6 volunteers that the special day, June 26, is the birthday of Norma N. Gil, the first Enterostomal Therapist as also a stoma person, spent all her life to help build self rehabilitation, returning to society and home. The starting day for the project was chosen on Norma N. Gill s day. Aiming to follow the footsteps of Norma to help more stoma people to lead a healthy life. BullETin October

9 Li Juyun in her daily work Visit event, ETs meeting Junior stoma person Li Juyun, ET, Registered nurses, the head nurse of digestive system surgical oncology, graduated in Nanjing Enterostomal Therapist school, She is now engaged rehabilitation nursing one to one education, collective education, outpatient extension service for stoma person and the care of urinary disorder after rectal cancer surgery using clean intermittent catheterization technique in Jiangsu Province Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital. Kai-Li Lee. The Chi Mei Medical Center, WCET ID Taiwan I am Kai-Li Lee, as the ET leader of Chi-Mei medical centers. Taiwan appreciated WCET reminding us to celebrate a Norma N. Gill Day. As a member of Taiwan WOCN Association committee and WCET Taiwan ID and Education committee. I do feel that it is our responsibility passing down the professional skills and knowledge of wound and ostomy care to new generation of all ET nurses. Therefore, I invited ET nurses to come from different hospitals to join us in celebrating the NNG day held in Chi-Mei Hospital on 26th June In this celebration, we cheered and encouraged each other working together and doing well, also reminding us what all ET nurses responsibility is! 11 Saraswati Bhandari, WCET ID Nepal I am so happy that I could make effective use of today, the birthday of Norma N. Gill. I visited to the Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital and met to the patients with ostomies and explained the application process of given supplies. Also, I handed over a box of ostomy supplies to the nurses of same Hospital for future use in poor patients. I have given those products through Stoma Care Nepal, a non profitable organization. I am planning to do something on the World Ostomy Day too! Saraswati visiting patients and nurses Sarojini Sharma, Nepal BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital (BPKMCH) is the National cancer centre of Nepal. The catchment area of the hospital is not only Nepal but also Uttar Pradesh & Bihar and another part of India. I have started the stoma clinic in 2004 with limited resources. At that time i did not have formal training related to Enterostomal Therapy. Self learning was my options as because our country still do not have training school Gastrointestinal and uro surgeons were my major partners /mentors in taking care of ostomy patients for their dignified living. In the beginning, we did not have stoma appliances in the market. We were able to be in touch with Friends of Ostomates of USA. We share the problems of not having stoma appliances with them. Fortunately they started to send stoma supplies to our patients. In 2007, I got the chance to visit the stoma clinic of TATA MEMORIAL Hospital India. I also got Basic training on ET then after it was little bit easier to take care of my patient. Our hospital took initiation to send me for the training. In this year I spent 3 hours times with my junior nurses to talk about the contribution of Norma N. Gill for ostomates. It was good time to talk more about the crucial role of Enterostomal Therapist for the perfect rehabilitation of ostomates. I also had a good time with my patients. I spent one hour time with my patients to talk about the lady who had a zeal and enthusiasm to take care of the ostomates. Sarojini with junior Nurses and patient. BullETin October

12 Arum Ratna Pratiwi, WCET ID Indonesia What did we (Indonesian nurses) do on June 26th, 2016? We told people about Norma N. Gill Day by posting a brief story about Norma N. Gill on facebook. And here, Indonesian ETNEP s students celebrated Norma N. Gill Day. Their preceptors told them about Norma N. Gill, who she was and what did she do to build Enterostomal Therapy? 13 I Made Sukma Wijaya, Bali - Indonesia On this celebration, I introduced Norma N Gill and her spirit to my new students in Nursing Academy to motivate them to become professional nurses in the future and to choose what they passion in nursing. Besides that, I also share how to change stoma pouch and support the ostomy patient to improve quality of life patient with an ostomy. I never forget that the Norma N. Gill Foundation has given me a scholarship to be Enterostomal Therapist, thank you so much. Every year, June 26 will be a day for celebration because a legend named Norma Nottingham Gill Thompson was born. This day is a special day for all Enterostomal Therapist around the globe because Norma, who famously known as Mother of Enterostomal Therapist is responsible for the birth of Enterostomal Therapist. Norma is a legend and she has left us with a lasting legacy which we have continued to care for patients with stoma and wounds. She travel all over the world to offer help to train more Enterostomal Therapist (E.T.) She started training others since 1961 till I met her in 1995 and I believe she continues till the day she left us. She envisioned an association for all ETs and later WCET was born with her initiative together with her surgeon Dr Ruppert Turnbull. She was an extraordinary person and her contribution to the evolution of ETN is priceless and due to this, WCET has acknowledged Norma birth date to be celebrated around the world. Due to our month of Ramadhan, we had to celebrate in a different way. Since day time, we are not able to eat because we are fasting from dawn about 5 am till about 7.30 pm and normally most Muslim will go to the mosque for prayers. But we ed each other to remind us about the day and have done an article about Norma and her work. (This article will be published in a future issue of the WCET Journal). We wanted to have a breakfast to celebrate Norma s day, but it is a bit tired for us during the fasting month, so will decide to celebrate later once the Ramadhan will be done. BullETin October

14 Finally, in University Malaya Medical Centre, our ET Team decided to celebrate it on the 10 September in-conjunction with the starting of our Continence Care service. But to us every day is a day of celebration in remembrance of Norma. We had a presentation about Norma and her life by me. We decorated our clinic with Norma s banner and all ETs received a small purse with Norma N. Gill day sticker and a special poem for Norma. We had a great time together, talking about Norma, looking at her photos and a fantastic lunch. To Norma, rest in peace and we knew that Norma is so happy to know what we have done to continue her legacy. Mohd Nasir, from Malaysia, have been nominated for the AMN (Member of the Order of the Defender of the Realm) s title for the outstanding social work and contribution towards ET nursing education she done. This title is ranked 3 rd among the 10 classes of the Malaysian royal awards, in conjunction of Malaysian Majesty s birthday. She has been also promoted as the next Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and this has been effective since the 1 st September Nevertheless even with the promotion, she still lead the ET Team of her hospital in organizing ETNEPs, short courses for stoma and wounds and helping our neighbouring countries in the region to further explore and establish their ET Team. Kenyan Stoma Wound and Continence Nursing Education new on-going Program Elizabeth English, RN,RM, STN (Cred), BN,Dip Ap Sc (CHN) Grad Dip Hlth Couns, Past President World Council of Enterostomal Therapists (WCET) and Coordinator Kenyan AKUH Stoma Wound and Continence Nursing Education Program Lawrence, who had his SWCN qualification last time, is now one of the local teacher Kenyan Stoma Wound and Continence Nursing Education Program is a WCET AASTN Twinning project between Australia and Kenya and is in its second year. There are 19 students in the 2015 program and all appears very enthusiastic and amazed by what they have learnt so far in the first module which had ended last May. More modules are planned later in the year. The Australian team supported by the Australian Association of Stomal Therapy Nurses has funded all of this Twinning Program themselves by seeking donations from various sources. A main aim of the program is to make it sustainable so this year we are mentoring 7 of the students from 2014 program to become tutors (with 2 more joining us in the second module). As I am trying to raise money to assist them from the remote areas with their accommodation costs in Nairobi, any help is welcome. BullETin October

17 It is quite amazing in just one year to see how this education is making a difference in the lives of these stoic African patients. Their stories and their suffering is confronting and challenging but seeing the difference that stoma nurses can make in their lives is just so rewarding. Students and tutors in stoma and wound care practice: from workshops to patient bedside Disaster following earthquake Nepal 2015 Shanti Bajracharya, Enterostomal therapist, Kathmandu - Nepal The day started as a quite normal day on 25th April 2015, everybody doing their normal daily activities, without even knowing that the day was going to be one of the most tragic days in the history of Nepal leaving around 10,000 dead and many more injured. The earthquake hit Nepal at around 11.58AM making one of the districts in Gorkha as epicentre. It struck Kathmandu with magnitude of 7.8 Richter scale. Many houses an old heritages and temples also collapsed on that day. People were physically as well as mentally hurt after that day. Nobody was able to sleep at their own home, since it became the most risky place for people. People felt open spaces and streets were safer. Since that was on Saturday so everybody was at home. Everybody was frightened, we all went out of the house to an open space. For few hours there were lots of aftershocks, which I was unable to leave my family. Later after strong after shakes were over i went to my hospital knowing that a huge disaster was on the way. BullETin October

18 EQ = Earth Quake Disaster preparedness in our Baidya & Banskota hospital Training programmes conducted on disaster preparedness to staffs Hospital had its own disaster plan manual our hospital was under one of the biggest hospitals in the city i.e Patan hospital for help and support. District Public Health Office was conducting programmes for inter hospital communications. Disaster activation at B&B hospital First victim arrived after 9 minutes 15 seconds of first earthquake. Then after there was a continuous flow of victims one after another Since many patients started to arrive. Since many patients started to arrive, disaster state was announced in the hospital. All the staff were called to the hospital and the hospital s incident command centre was activated. Triaging was done to all the victims who arrived. And then they were categorised as red, yellow and green and then dispatched to the respective areas. On the first day of quake our hospital was crowded with patients, and we had to adjust the patients in fields and inside the tents. Since the staff were also frightened after the quakes, most of the inpatient facilities had to be shifted outside the building. Even operation theatre had to be shifted outside. 19 Support from national and international agencies After the major disaster in the country there were lots of support to our hospital as well as different hospitals in the city. Help included volunteers, medical supplies. Our hospital also extended their health services to the nearby districts like Kavre, Sindhupalchowk, Trishuli,Gorkha, Nagarkot by organising health camps. HRDC= Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre for Disabled Children Effect of earthquake on Ostomates As everybody, ostomates were also psychologically traumatised. Most of the ostomates were out of bags since their houses collapsed and they could not retrieve their bags. Some of them had to live outside the house for few weeks. Some of them were unable to come to the colostomy clinics due to unavailability of vehicle during that time. The regular colostomy clinics had to be closed. Only emergency patents were taken care of and given the bags. Distant colostomy clinic were run for the evaluations while the general health cap were run through B&B hospital and I had opportunity to treat some of them. Shanti with a patient Conclusion Our beautiful city Kathmandu has been ruined by the major earthquake. But still we somehow managed to come back to our normal life, though it took us months. We were fortunate enough to have such a huge amount of help and support from international agencies. We are still struggling on our way ahead to build Nepal as it was before. Dr. Zoran Krivokapic, internationally renowned surgeon, President of the European Association of colorectal surgery presented in the lecture issue of the incidence of colorectal carcinoma in Serbia, which represents 46 newly diagnosed cancers of the colon of 100,000 inhabitants and colon cancer is on the rise. The etiology is still not completely clear. They estimate treatment success with five-year survival rate and percentages of local recurrence carcinoma. 90% of colon cancers are detected in patients older than 50 years. The focus is on early diagnosis with the aim of successful surgical treatment. Werner Droste from Germany presented the importance of preoperative stoma site marking. Successful ostomy care after operation depends on that. It allows safe installation of ostomy appliances without leakage and possible peristomal skin irritation. Dr. Velimir Marković, the surgeon talked about importance of preoperative preparation of the patient to the stoma. Problems arise when it comes to urgent surgery. Thus, doctors, nurses and especially patients are the main objective to achieve an optimal quality of life with a stoma. Dr. Gian Carlo Canese from Italy presented a study on the quality of life of patients with a stoma. He talked about importance of multicultural approach to patients. Because of different cultural, religious beliefs, these patients have different needs, otherwise accept their new body image. 21 Živka Madžić, Head nurse of First Surgical Clinic in Belgrade and President of the Stoma nurses association of Serbia introduced the concept of nursing care of the patient with colorectal carcinoma. He talked about the application of the theories of Virginia Henderson and Dorothea Orem. Dragan Jakovljevic from Health Centre presented the results of colorectal cancer screening in tested patients 8% (897) had a positive test, 80% had colonoscopy (690) and 8% of them were found colon carcinoma, 50% patients were made polypectomy (342), 245 cases had other diagnosis, 10% of them was without disease. Jagoš Radovič from Clinical Center Kragujevac presented the importance of the national program for the detection of colon cancer. Mirjana Marinkovic, Head nurse of the Clinical Center Niš (Serbia) spoke about the importance of patient trust in health care personnel. It is the only way to achieve an optimum cooperation of the patient for the treatment. Daliborka Gredo, a nurse from the Institute for health protection of mother and child of Serbia presented the care of children with stoma. In Serbia, they have a slightly different way to deal with patients with a stoma than in some other countries. They have a so-called Stoma centers in various parts of Serbia, where patients receive the stoma help, advice for self-care. The theme of the symposium was also intermittent self-catetherisation at men, skin disorders of peristomal skin and treatment. As part of the symposium was held also a General meeting of ECET where the Executive Board, together with delegates from other countries, planned their activities in the coming years. Nurses from Serbia have expressed their desire for a special training in the field of Enterostomal Therapy. The proposal was to organize home school and invited lecturers from abroad. However, Nurses from Serbia have in recent years expanded the scope of nursing. Attention began to devote the pediatric field, incontinence and wound care. As part of the symposium at the end of presentations, many discussions were held. There were many new ideas, approaches to nursing care. So we are full of new information, good impressions split each to his own home. And surely true: Knowledge has value if you share it! BullETin October

22 10 th Wound care annual conference of the Swiss Association for Woundcare Romande (French speaking) section Dr Maria Iakova MD & Laurent Chabal After having in 2014 the 1 st join Conference with the German speaking section in Bienne, we had this year our annual local conference at Beausobre theatre in Morges, on May 28. We had around 330 participants (various health professionals as under and post graduate Nurse students) with 25 sponsors. 2 Nursing schools had a booth as 3 invited associations (Swiss Romande association for Clinician Nurses, ASRIC ; Support for para and tetraplegics as well as other people with neurological paralysis symptoms, ParaHelp; and Swiss Romande Association for victims of burns, FLAVIE). As the moto of this conference was For the simple to the complex wound, we had a very transdisciplinary and interesting programme. A special topic was around wound care in a complex context: Dr Hubert Vuagnat, our past President, talked about his experience in wound care training in Cameron and Vincent Kokou Kouami, WCET ID from Togo, about wound care in Togo. Batalla, MAN, RN Faculty, University of the Philippines Manila, College of Nursing With the aim of providing its participants with essential knowledge on the concept of holism and how it can be integrated into the practice of ostomy, continence, and wound care, the ETNAP, Inc. held its 5 th Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting themed Optimizing Competencies Towards Holistic Ostomy, Continence and Wound Nursing Practice on May 29, 2015 at Eurotel Hotel in Manila. This was attended by approximately 100 delegates from different institutions across the Philippines. The attendees were mostly nurses who have a special interest in learning about ostomy and wound management. Conference organizers with delegates. (Photos by MG Batalla) As this is an evolving and relatively young specialty in the Philippines, the organization deemed it important to impart among its stakeholders the value of holistic approach in specialty nursing practice and how it can impact both clientele and healthcare team. At the beginning of the program, the national president of the Philippine Nurses Association, Inc. (PNA), Dr. Mila Delia Llanes, delivered her keynote message which highlighted the crucial roles of the organization in augmenting competencies in specialty nursing practice and contributing to a healthier nation. This was followed by nomination of new Board of Directors and Nomination and Election Committee (NOMELEC) members. Following the nomination was the conference proper which was divided into three sessions. The first session consisted of lectures by Dr. Araceli Balabagno entitled Holism as a Framework in Specialty Nursing Practice and by Ms. Paula Quiambao which was about pressure ulcer and management of maintenance wounds. 24 Demonstration of tai chi by Dr. Balabagno During the second session, Dr. Armand Crisostomo and Dr. Marie Carmela Lapitan, consultant surgeons from the Division of Colorectal Surgery and Division of Urology of the Philippine General Hospital respectively and professors at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine, delivered lectures providing participants theoretical background on medical-surgical procedures and nursing implications related to ostomy and continence. In addition, the lecture titled Integrating the Holistic Approach in Nursing Care of Patients with Ostomy was delivered by the first ET in the Philippines, Ms. Nelda Escueta. The last section of the convention involved a podium presentation of two recent research studies done in the Philippines which motivated the delegates to engage in activities that contribute to nursing literature and advancement of nursing practice. There were also poster presentations by four Indonesian ETs that further encouraged regional collaboration among ASEAN members. The results of the election were announced at the end of the program. Overall, the event was a success. Most of the delegates upon evaluation rated the event as an informative scientific meeting and convention and that the learning objectives of the program have been met. BullETin October

Angela Patricia Concepcion, RN UP Manila Aceleen Monteagudo, RN UP Manila As the famous industrialist Henry Ford quoted, Coming together is the beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success, the 3 rd year of Woundpedia Course in the Philippines had been a huge and successful learning activity to all healthcare professionals and to all the WCET members in the Philippines. Last June 29-July 2, 2015, doctors, nurses, nursing attendants and volunteers who have special interest and practice in wounds and ostomies gathered to attend a much awaited learning event and training at the middle of the year. The Woundpedia IIWCC was directed by Dr. R.Gary Sibbald and co-directed by WCET Vice President, Dr. Elizabeth Ayello, Ms. Hiske Smart, Dr. Barbara Delmore and the WCET ID for Philippines, Ms. Paula Quiambao, all of whom are WCET members. 26 As any basic course on this specialty is not offered in our country and that most health professionals obtain their training in the nearby nations such as Malaysia, Singapore or even in the United States, it was made sure that most of the attendees invited were selected carefully based on their interest, passion, practice and service to the country. Attendees were from UP-Philippine General Hospital, UP College of Nursing, Manila Naval and other military hospital and units from the islands of Luzon to Mindanao, The Ruth Foundation, ET Nurses Association of the Philippines (ETNAP), Makati Medical Center, Cardinal Santos Medical Center, St. Joseph s Hospital and many other private hospitals in the country. Woundpedia Manila 2015 Intermediate Course Attendees This 2 days Basic course and another 2 days Intermediate course tackled topics about wound management and stoma skin care. The session included lectures on the basics of skin and skin care, wound bed preparation, introduction to dressings, burns and trauma, stoma skin complications and management, MASD (Moisture Associated Skin Damage), and lower limb ulcers such as neuropathic, venous and arterial ulcers. Skills component of the training included making an improvised monofilament and using the 60-Second Diabetic Foot Screen, use of infrared thermometry, and demonstration of compression therapy through layered bandaging. Monofilament and 60 Second Foot Screen activity The participants were able to practice their knowledge gained from reading the articles published in WCET journal on how to make a monofilament and do a 60-second foot screen. 27 The session was made very interactive which promoted better retention of what were imparted to them. There were also problem solving group activities and team building exercises to be able to send a message that collaboration in healthcare or working as a team is crucial in moving the system towards success. A student from the last year s program, Lt. Paula Aromin also shared several severe cases of trauma and combat wounds from the military units, and some application of therapies which they have learned last year, through brief presentations. The last two days of training used an approach with one level of difficulty higher than the basic course. A case based approach to learning key concepts was used. Also this time, insights were obtained from the participants on how they can apply practical learnings to their current practice areas and systems they are in. Participants on team building activity Towards the end, activities of WCET in the Philippines for the Year 2014 to 2015, led by WCET Philippine ID and members, were also presented as a form of continuation of the efforts done by the team, in increasing the number of skilled and practicing nurses and doctors in the specialty, since the WoundPedia courses started in Overall, the course was well accepted by the attendees with much enthusiasm and excitement. Many had showed interest and strong commitment to bring to their respective areas a positive change, inspired by the learnings from this event. Everyone is looking forward to the continuity of the educational activities on this specialty, and even establishing wound clinics with a functional team of doctors, nurses and allied health care professionals towards providing best practice on care, prevention and cure of many kinds of skin injuries and conditions that lead to wounds, ostomies and their complications. Since the Woundpedia courses have began, the number of WCET members have increased from 3 to 26 and continues to gain interested members. BullETin October
