This predominately includes people living on the street, in crisis accommodation, or in situations which mean that buying food is a struggle. The soup vans drive to 6 different locations around Melbourne CBD 365 days of the year, providing hundreds of people with meals on any given night. The goal is to provide each client with hot soup, sandwiches, fruit, warm drinks and/or hot food from our vans. As well as warm smiles, great conversations and kind encounters. It is vital that volunteers adhere to the processes and procedures of St. Vincent de Paul s work at all times. This means directing client enquires to Night Leaders who are on hand and listening to their directions about how to proceed with an action. On behalf of all the existing volunteers on the van, we would like to thank you immensely for your interest in helping us make a positive difference. RULES FOR STUDENT VOLUNTEERS All students must meet at the soup kitchen at Melrose St North Melbourne at 6.00pm. Being on time is greatly appreciated the kitchen staff need as much help as they can get for food preparation. If you re interested in attending earlier to lend an extra helping hand to the kitchen, then please let Charlotte know via text or phone call. Please sign-in on arrival. For first timers- please fill out volunteer forms (will be explained on arrival). The minimum age for volunteer students is 16 years old. Students MUST NOT leave the premises during their time at the kitchen. While at city stops volunteers must not leave sight of Night Leaders under ANY circumstances. There is no smoking allowed while on the kitchen premises. Please be respectful of all clients, volunteers and staff at the kitchen and on city stops. Food safety requirements must be adhered to at all times see below. The finish time is approximately 10.30pm. Please remember to sign-out on the kitchen roster sheet before you leave. WHAT TO WEAR The following dress code must be strictly adhered to for safety and practicality reasons: Wear flat closed toed shoes absolutely no thongs, high-heeled shoes, sandals or ballet flats. Wear comfortable loose fitting clothes no short skirts, short shorts, or low cut singlets Remove all jewellery where possible due to safety and hygiene concerns. During summer the kitchen can get quite warm, but temp can decrease dramatically once we re at the later stops. Bringing a jacket just in case is advised. During winter it can become VERY cold and windy at the later stops. Bringing a rain proof jacket and beanie is advised. Plastic gloves will be supplied. Do not wear identifying clothing: ie work or school uniform, items with your name on them Avoid wearing items with expensive branding on them Runners, jeans, jacket and a T shirt is the ideal outfit 2014 YEP SOUP VAN GUIDLINES FOR VOLUNTEERS Page 1 of 5

2 VALUABLES Please avoid bringing any valuables or bags as we have no guaranteed space available to store them in the kitchen or vans. ABSENCE/LATE ARRIVAL ON THE DAY CALL CHARLOTTE ON OR RICHARD ON If you are running late please call us with estimated arrival time. If you cannot attend on the day let us know as early as possible we then try to fill the places as we need a minimum number of 4 helpers each day. SOUP VAN GUIDELINES Please closely follow the instructions of the seasoned volunteers and kitchen staff No photographs to be taken in the kitchen or on city stops. All volunteers must sign-in and sign-out. There is no smoking allowed while inside kitchen premises. Gloves must be worn whenever you are carrying out your duties - hands must be washed before and after using the toilet, smoking, touching or blowing your nose. Please note that any volunteer not adhering to these guidelines will be unable to volunteer at the soup van on the day. 3 This is the building you re looking for (the brown brick building). When you arrive, enter the driveway and you should see 3 white vans. Walk towards the car port and to your right you will see a walkway lined with outside wheelie bins, walk through here and you will find the kitchen, and the other lovely volunteers. If for some reason you are the first YEP person there, tell the volunteers that you are with Charlotte and Richard. If you are worried about arrival, call Charlotte or Richard as you get there and they can meet you in the driveway. 4 TYPICAL DAY FOR A VOLUNTEER It is expected that everyone who volunteers on the day is willing to undertake these tasks when asked. Time Task / Activity 6:00pm Meet at Melrose St for registration, sign in, and you will be taken to the Kitchen to begin food preparation. 6:00 6:50 Food Preparation Assist in the preparation of sandwiches Clean kitchen and dishes Pack vans with sandwiches and drinks etc. 6:50 7:00 Grouping and debrief 7:00 10:00 (approx) Go out on vans Vans visit 6 stops in CBD Serve Food There are 3 stations on vans: - Hot Food - Cold Food - Drinks 10:00 10:30 Clean Up On returning to the kitchen the soup van crew must clean the kitchen and leave it perfect for the group on the next day. This includes: - Emptying vans - Washing canisters/thermoses - Putting away equipment - Sweeping and mopping floors LEAVING THE KITCHEN AT END OF NIGHT Charlotte and Richard will be the last people to leave, and if they cannot provide lifts for volunteers home then they will wait for parents to pick their children up. If you are under 18 and have public transported to the venue you will NOT be able to public transport home at night under ANY circumstances. If you have your license, carpooling is recommended.
