1 El Dorado Public Schools SUMMER ACADEMY Tonya Cogan, Director Phone: General Information Academy Overview The Summer Academy is based on a national award-winning program. Courses are intended to engage our students by placing them in small groups and allowing them to develop new skills and interests or improve existing skills through participation. Instructors Under the guidance of Summer School Director, Tonya Cogan, the staff consists of certified and classified teachers from USD 490. Teachers have designed the courses and included activities that support district reading and math standards, as well as other content areas. Location, Dates and Times Classes will be held at Skelly Elementary, June 6-30, Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. through 12 p.m. Enrollment, Tuition Payments and Refunds Enrollment begins on March 10 th and continues until May 8 th or the class is full. If there are openings after the enrollment period is closed, limited enrollment may be available depending upon the availability of staff. The enrollment form should be completed and returned to any school office or the district office. Enrollment is exclusive to students currently enrolled in grades K-11 in USD 490. Out of district enrollment is not available. Tuition for each course is $10, regardless of the number of days or hours in session. The maximum cost for a parent of a child attending 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. for the month of June would be $40. Full payment is due with enrollment. Fees for children who qualify for free and reduced lunches are waived. Fees for grades K-5 students who have been identified as at-risk for academic achievement are also waived. If you have questions about your child meeting one of these criteria, please contact your school principal. Classes are subject to minimum enrollment criteria and may be cancelled following the close of enrollment on May 8 th. Phone calls will be made to the phone number on the enrollment form and a voice mail may be left. In the event of cancellation, you may select any available alternate course or refunds will be given. Withdrawals before June 1 st will be assessed a 20% cancellation fee. If you withdraw on or after June 1 st, no refund will be provided. Course Selection Look for courses in your child s current grade level section. Enter courses in order of preference on the enrollment form. We cannot guarantee every preferred class will be available but will try to develop a schedule as close to your preferences as possible and meet your attendance needs. Optional Programs Course Completion, Credit Recovery and Driver s Education are other summer programs offered during the month of June as part of district summer programs. Your child can participate in Summer Academy and these courses, but we need to know in order to develop a schedule. Please indicate this on the enrollment form. Fees for these optional programs have no waived fees and must be paid in advance. Each Day Students should arrive between 7:45 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Teachers carrying numbered cards will greet students in the gym. The flags represent grade level sections this will help students quickly locate teachers. In the event your child arrives early, they should take a seat at one of the tables. Attendance will be taken each day, in every class. If your child is ill, late, or not able to attend, please call the school office ( ). Otherwise, to insure they are safe, we will call the numbers listed on the enrollment form to make certain parents are aware of the absence. If you need to pick your child up early or they arrive late, use the main school entrance under the Northeast canopy. Free breakfast and lunch will be served to all students attending Summer Academy as part of the schedule.
2 Supplies Most supplies for activities are provided. In the event a teacher has a special request, they will send a note home with your student. This should be rare and limited to items for personalized projects. Transportation A district shuttle bus will run Monday through Thursday, June 6-30, from each district attendance center to Skelly. The shuttle will pick up students before the first class at 8:00 a.m. and return them after the last class is dismissed at 12:00 p.m. Additionally, shuttles will provide transportation for other youth summer activities in El Dorado. Provide a list of your child s other activities with enrollment to register for shuttle service in addition to Summer Academy. Specific pick-up/drop-off times will be determined and parents will be notified before the first day of classes. Visitors Students may not bring friends or visitors with them to class.
