1 DaVinci Academy s Distance Learning empowers parents and students by providing resources and educational opportunities. At DaVinci we strive to perfect our core values of citizenship, curiosity, creativity, collaboration, competitiveness, contemplation and compassion in order to inspire individual greatness. Our program has been created with flexibility in mind to meet the individual needs of homeschooling families. A Curriculum package of your choosing for each subject, with ALL the relevant supplies including computer if needed. Additional educational resources available for checkout at our Distance Learning library. Quality classes in a safe environment, such as: Music, Dance, Science Lab, Theater, Lego robotics, Art, Pottery, Chinese, ASL, Cooking, Sewing, Shakespeare, Engineering and more. (classes subject to change depending on student interest) Individualized Music lessons. An Educational Specialist (certified teacher) to support you in creating your child's individualized learning plan and building their educational portfolio. Parent education and enrichment to help you create the best home learning environment and practices for you and your children. These tools include Guest speakers, Support groups, Book clubs, Mentoring in the classics, 7 Keys Certification, and a Family Builder Class. Monthly Family Field Trips for family fun and to build a close community. Child development aides such as speech therapy, reading specialist, IEP services and much more... Student Expectations Each student will take a full course load: K-2 students reading/language arts, math, integrated curriculum 3-6 grade students reading/language arts, math, science, social studies, physical education, and arts Parents/students must keep a log of instructional hours that is reviewed by the educational specialist each month. The Education Specialist is responsible for tracking attendance and continually assessing the student s progress. Students should be working in all courses each week. Turn in all assignments/projects/portfolio s on time. Participate in any course screening and work with educational specialist to maximize learning. Participate in State Mandated testing in April and May (we want to show how effective our program is to the state and the only way for it to gain credibility in the eyes of the state is to
2 show how much our students know and have progressed. Parents can always exercise their legal rights; however, choosing not to participate in state testing can hurt innovative programs like ours in the future. So if you like these types of innovative programs then help us show the state how well our students our doing in these programs.) We encourage the student to set their own educational goals and we support them in their individual learning style. These goals will be recorded at the beginning of the year on the student educational plan or SEP. When parents meet with the educational specialist, they will review and revise these goals. Parent Responsibilities The parent collaborate with their Educational Specialist (ES) to create an individualized learning calendar that best suits the needs of the child. The parent will meet face to face with their ES at least once every 20 school days in order to document attendance and add to the child s portfolio. Each parent will be responsible to provide evidence of learning for the portfolio. Evidence of learning can be in the form of photographs, videotapes, audiotapes, drawings, tests, projects, writing samples, work sheets, etc. Parents have the opportunity to tailor the learning environment to individual needs and learning styles of their children, and have the freedom of using their chosen educational philosophy. We provide classes for parent education and enrichment to help in the creation of the best practices for a home learning environment for you and your children. Some examples of these classes will be Mentoring in the Classics, 7 keys certification, Family Builder Class, Guest speakers, Support groups, Focus groups (Focus on Math, Focus on Reading etc), and Book clubs. The majority of these will take place during the day when classes and daycare are available for your children. The Education Specialist Each family is assigned an Education Specialist (ES). The ES is available when needed to help develop your child's individualized educational plan. Together, you will determine what resources (including curricula and classes) will be needed for the various subjects which your child will cover this school year. Your ES will place the orders for your chosen curriculum and supplies, and register your student for classes. The ES will assist with lesson development and delivery if needed, and will review and give feedback on student assignments/projects for that given time period. The ES will meet face to face with the parent and student at least once every 20 school days at DaVinci Academy. Your ES is responsible to collect all of the necessary documentation for
3 your child's portfolio as well as document progress in chosen curriculum. The ES will guide and advise parents and students on academic progress toward learning goals in the student educational plan or SEP. The ES will also collect student instructional hours that parents have kept during that time period. These student instructional hours will assist the ES in properly entering your child s attendance record. The meeting with your ES is very important, neither party should accept late arrivals, missed appointments, or unpreparedness as routine. Please make every effort to keep the monthly meeting appointments a priority, and change them only if absolutely necessary. The ES is the main liaison between your family and the school. Communication between the ES and your family will occur at the monthly meetings, and through telephone calls and/or e- mails. Let your ES know your preferred method of communication and the best times to reach you. Parents may always request a different ES if they are unhappy with their current arrangement by contacting the Director of Distance Learning. Sometimes an ES may feel that the family would be better served by another ES. In that case, they may request to be released from the assignment to that family. Portfolio A portfolio is a collection of student work that shows student progress and effort in the four core areas - math, language arts, science, and social studies and an elective. The student's portfolio must include a wide sampling of the student's best work in each area. Your Education Specialist will collect work samples for each area at each meeting. Portfolio work samples become the property of the school and will not be returned. These samples may be in the form of photographs, videotapes, audiotapes, drawings, tests, projects, writing samples, work sheets etc. Classes On-site classes will be held during regular school hours Monday-Thursday. Your ES will register your student for the classes of your choice. Our goal is to provide quality educational classes in a supportive, fun environment. Class sizes will vary depending on the subject but the minimum for an average class will be 10 students with a maximum of 15. If the minimum number of students isn't reached a class may be canceled at the Director s discretion. Our goal is to provide a variety of curricula choices and a variety of electives. You are welcome to register for the classes that support your child's interest and schedule. An example would be to register for all six periods in a single day to have your student
4 enrolled for a full day. Another example would be to enroll for afternoon classes only, in order to provide the opportunity for your children to complete their daily school work before their afternoon electives. Curriculum Package Each individual curriculum package will have all the materials that you will require to teach that course. Materials must be used for the ENROLLED student in which they are being purchased for. The packages will include such things as: Educational curriculum and Books. (Textbooks, consumables, DVDs, unit studies, software, literature, etc.) Supplemental educational materials. (Educational games, manipulatives, etc) Basic school & office supplies typically found in a classroom (paper, pencils, scissors, glue, notebooks etc). Art and Music supplies Computer (if requested) Online courses and educational programs. All resources will remain the property of DaVinci Academy and the unused portions will need to be returned. Distance Learning Resource Library Our resource library will contain supplemental material for short term lending. Science kits, Microscopes, Educational Games and DVD s, Living Math books, literature etc. The things that help make learning fun, but that you only need once in a while. Tracking Materials All materials ordered are shipped to the school where they are "received" internally and stamped/labeled as being the property of DaVinci Academy. The materials are delivered to the parent by the ES and the list of items is signed for and received by the parent who then assumes responsibility for those items. All instructional items purchased with school funds, including consumable items not used, remain the property of the school. Said items must be in the possession of the school at the time in which all immediate family members are no longer enrolled or in need of these items. Parents will be charged for any lost or missing items, items which were willfully damaged, or items not consumed and not returned to the school. The ES is to use their professional judgment in assessing all school materials. They are to determine whether or not items returned have been willfully damaged and should be charged as a "missing
5 material", or if the items were "used up" through normal use and should be discarded. No items will be prorated, but rather school fines will be charged for all lost or missing materials at the full replacement cost.
