2 PART I: GENERAL INFORMATION DESCRIPTION OF TOWN - SHORT HISTORY AND LOCATION Olsztyn is the capital of the Province of Warmia and Mazury - known as the land of a thousand lakes (north-eastern Poland). The town has over 172,000 inhabitants and is located in the central part of lake District 220 km from Warsaw and 160 km from Gdańsk. Olsztyn is surrounded by great forests and lakes, ten of which are situated within the boundaries of the city. The town was granted municipal rights in In the period , it was ruled by the bishops of Warmia and remained under polish control. between and Nicolas Copernicus lived and conducted his astronomical observations in the gothic castle of the Warmia Chapter. During the Polish Teutonic war (1521) Copernicus supervised the defence of the town and castle against the Teutonic army. As a result of the first partition of Poland, Olsztyn was incorporated into (German) Prussia in In the interwar period, despite germanisation, the town was the main centre of the Polish movement. during World War II, more than 36% of the town was destroyed. Today, Olsztyn is a dynamic town of young people, 40,000 of whom study at the local university. The historical centre of the town, encircled by the picturesque Łyna River, is entered through the 14 th century Gothic High Gate, the remains of municipal fortifications. The most important monument of sacral architecture is St. Jacob s Cathedral, a gothic, three-nave brick church, dating from An unquestionable attraction of the Old Town is the fortified castle of the Warmia chapter, constructed in the 14 th century, where Nicolas Copernicus lived. A visit to the home of Copernicus would not be complete without seeing the Planetarium and the Astronomical Observatory, which is located in a 19 th century water tower. - MAIN LOCAL/CULTURAL EVENTS Olsztyn is particularly attractive during the summer when numerous artistic events of Olsztyn Summer of Arts take place (from June to September) - many concerts, open-air events, among others Olsztyn Blues Nights, Poetry Singing Festival. All of them are well known and bring Polish and foreign visitors to the town. The detailed programme of events is published every year in the Olsztyn Cultural Information Magazine and in local press. during the off-season period the town is also alive and active. For example, during March Stefan Jaracz memorial theatre houses Olsztyn Theatre Meetings. The cultural map of Olsztyn includes the Feliks Nowowiejski State Concert Hall, the Jaracz Theatre, the Olsztyn Puppet Theatre, Helios multiplex, Awangarda cinema in the Old Town, The Planetarium and Astronomical Observatory, the Museum of Warmia and Mazury (located in the castle), the Museum of Gazeta Olsztyńska, Art Exhibitions Centre as well as many local galleries, clubs, cafes and restaurants. 2

SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANISING INSTITUTION The University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn was established on September 1, The University combines a 50-year tradition of the University of Agriculture and Technology, a 30-year tradition of the Higher Teacher Education School and a 450-year tradition of theological education in Warmia. The University employs around 3400 persons, including around 2000 academic teachers. The University has over students every year. The Centre of Culture and Polish Language for Foreigners, as one of the general public units of the University of Warmia and Mazury, was established on 28 January 2005 on a UWM Senate Resolution. The Centre is based in the newly erected centre for the Faculty of Humanities on the Kortowo site - one of the most picturesque university campuses in Poland (over 130 ha of green belt around Lake Kortowskie, with food and accommodation infrastructure, numerous students clubs, sports centres, a modern library and bookshops).
