2 PART I: GENERAL INFORMATION DESCRIPTION OF TOWN - SHORT HISTORY AND LOCATION The Antalya Region has always been settled, ever since the Paleolithic Age untill today. Since there are names of this region mentioned in Homer's Illiad, it is obvious that there was an indigenous people called Pamphilio living in in this region around 1200 B.C. The region later was under the sovereignty of the Lydian Kingdom, the Persians and Alexander the Great. The western part of Pamphillia was acquired by the King Attalos II of Pergarnon in 2nd century B.C. and the king founded a city on the western coast of the Mediterranean Sea and gave his name to the city, Attalia, today s Antalya. The city was subjected to the Roman Empire after death of Attalos III and to the Byzantine Empire beginning from the 4th century. As of the Seljuks' conquest of the city in 1207, the Turkish-Islamic period began and the region came under the sovereignty of the Ottoman State towards the end of the 14th century. Antalya is located on the south coast of Turkey, about 200 kms North-west of Cyprus and 750 kms South ot İstanbul. There are many Roman remains in and around the city e.g. Hadrian s Gate. Antalya Museum which is located in the city center is one of the most finest in Turkey. see - MAIN LOCAL/CULTURAL EVENTS Antalya provides students an excellent learning enviroment in a beautiful and historical city with a wonderful panaromic view of sea and mountains. More than half a million local people living in Antalya are lucky enough to enjoy a wonderful climate. Antalya has a typical Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers, with temperature often rising above 30ºC (86ºF) in July and August. Showers are unlikely in the summer months, but the rainfall is quite high in winter. In January, it is sunny and mild,10-20 ºC. The city warmly welcomes visiting students with a wide choice of attractions, for example shopping centers, local bazaars, cinemas, theatres, museums, mosques, churches, worl-wide famous beaches and nearyby countryside for hiking. The Education Faculty where the courses will take place is located only 2 kilometers away from the world-wide famous Konyaalti Beaches.Besides, the student recreation areas, Olbia and Yakut, provide students and teachers with a range of banking services, restaurants, cafes and shops. Meltem District which offers a rich range of facilities with cafes, restaurants, shopping centers and supermarkets is located just opposite the campus area. - HOW TO REACH TOWN (LINKS FROM THE NEAREST AIRPORT, TRAIN OR COACH STATIONS) There are 3 terminals at Antalya Airport, one domestic and two international. They may take the Havaş Bus, Public Bus or a taxi to the university from the airport. The airport is 17 kms from the university, it takes minutes by taxi and costs about TL\15-25 EURO. All taxis have metres that show the price. If the students want to take a taxi they should ask for the address Akdeniz Üniversitesi Dumlupınar Kampusu. Havaş Bus costs approximately 10 TL\5 EURO. This bus takes students to Meltem District which is right opposite the university campus entrance. Students can also take Puplic Bus from the airport to Meltem District. It is possible for the students to take a Public Bus in every 30 minutes and it costs about 3.5 TL\1.5 EURO. - TRANSPORT IN TOWN (BRIEF INFORMATION ON THE MAIN MEANS OF TRANSPORT AVAILABLE) Transportation in the town is quite easy, economical and comfortable on a frequent public bus or minibus. They coast approximately TL\ EURO. For registered students it is even cheaper. Taxis are also reasonably cheap. For example to go by taxi from the university campus to the Old Town is approximately 15-20TL\ EURO. 2

3 SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANISING INSTITUTION Akdeniz University, founded on July 20, 1982, now provides education for thirty thousand students in twelve faculties, four schools, one conservatory, twelve vocational schools and four institutes. Akdeniz University educates and trains its students to be individuals capable of dealing with the challenges of a global working environment. Our students have access to up-to-date classrooms and lecture theatres provided with the most recent technological facilities, backed up by research and application laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Up to the present time, Akdeniz University signed more than 267 Bilateral Agreements covering student and academic staff exchanges with a wide range of European universities. Under the terms of these agreements, 819 students (709 students for education, 110 for placement) and 173 members of the academic staff of Akdeniz University have had the opportunity to learn or teach in the European Universities in 23 different countries, and in return 169 students and 81 members of staff from European institutions in 140 different countries have been welcomed by our university. Akdeniz University is also partner in several LLP subprograms such as Grundvig, Erasmus-Intensive Programs, Erasmus-Thematic Networks funded by the European Commission. Moreover, Akdeniz University is one of the few universities in Turkey organizing Intensive Turkish Language Course for the foreign students coming to Turkey with Erasmus program. Up to the present time, the university welcomed 293 foreign students to our EILC course. See The Faculty of Education Turkish Language Education Department has very experienced teacher trainers in the field of teaching Turkish both as a native and foreign language. In this sense, the experience gained by the teachers of this department through teaching Turkish as a native and foreign language means the Turkish Language Education Department is the ideal place for such a program to be opened and continued. The content, language and cultural domains of the course were specially tailored to meet the specific needs of the Erasmus Exchange students. Department staff prepared a 150-page materials package as course and extracurricular material. Some of the staff members are the author of a set of course books that are written especially for European learners of Turkish as a foreign language. Most of those books are used as official course books materials at even some European universities Turkish Language Departments as a foreign language. In this sense, the effectiveness and efficiency of these materials in the process of learning is positively experienced and the positive outcomes of usage of them were proved. The staff has the experience of teaching Turkish as a foreign and native language. They are familiar and experienced with the language teaching methods, approaches and techniques in the field of Turkish Education. The teaching-learning environment of Education Faculty Turkish Language Education Department is ideal for such a course in terms of technical, physical and educational dimensions. Akdeniz University has a beautiful, modern and enormous campus located in the city center and by the sea. The campus is located only 2 kilometers away from the world-wide famous Konyaalti Beaches. The Education Faculty has a well-designed, fully airconditioned building where the comfort of students and teachers are provided with an ideal teaching and learning environment. Besides, the student recreation area, Olbia, provides students and teachers with a range of banking services, restaurants, cafes and shops. ACCOMMODATION - SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMMODATION OFFERED (HOTEL, APARTMENTS, STUDENT HALLS, OTHERS; IF THERE ARE COOKING FACILITIES) AND ON THE RENT TO BE PAID PER WEEK Accommodation issue will be dealt with International Office of the Akdeniz University. A more detailed info packet will be sent to students during the process.. In addition, Private hotels or hostels can be found outside the campus area. Prices are approximately TL\10-50 EURO per day.generally lunch and dinners are not included in this price. It is not that difficult to find reasonably cheap hotels and hostels near the university campus. Meals in the campus area are provided in the dormitories, central canteen, Olbia and Yakut recreation areas where students can eat with reasonable prices ( TL:1,5-4,5 EURO). Prices may differ in the city depending on the area. MEALS - SHORT DESCRIPTION ON THE SERVICES OFFERED (UNIVERSITY CANTEENS, RESTAURANTS, BARS, OTHERS) There are various cafeterias, restaurants, canteens in the university campus. Students can have breakfast, lunch and dinner in the university campus for a reasonable price. In addition, the university s Cenral Cafeteria provides lunch for its personnel and students with a fixed menu each day. Lunch outside the campus costs approximately between 5 TL- 10TL\2.5-5 EURO. 3

4 RECEPTION OF STUDENTS - MEETING POINT (PLACE, DATE AND TIME OF FIRST MEETING - FOR EACH COURSE WHERE DIFFERENT) The first meeting with the students will be held at the Faculty of Education at on the first day of the program. The courses will be also held at this building. The courses will start at EXTRA MURAL ACTIVITIES - SITE VISITS During the EILC program students will have a chance to visit various sites every saturday by buses, that will be free of charge, such as The Old Town, Clock Tower, the Yacht Marina, the Ancient City Walls, the Ancient Hadrian s Gate and the Antalya Museum. In addition, there will be several open air museum and ancient city visits such as Perge, Phaselis, Myra, Alanya, Beşkonak Rafting Center, Kekova and Olympos. Optional activities after the classes and weekends may give students a chance to practice their Turkish language skills.this will give students every opputunity to become familiar with Turkish culture and life style. A detailed site visit schedule will be sent to the students before their arrival in the registration process. - SPORTS FACILITIES (SWIMMING, TENNIS, GYMNASIUM; OPENING DAYS AND AVAILABLE INFORMATION) All EILC students may use various sports facilities such as tennis, football, rock climbing, swimming and basketball in the university campus area. - ENTERTAINMENT (CINEMA, THEATRE, ETC.; BRIEF INFORMATION ON PLACES AND STUDENT FACILITIES) Meltem District is opposite the university campus. It is a three minute walking distance from the campus. In Meltem District there are several supermarkets that are open between 8.30 A.M. and P.M. In addition to this there are smaller shops that are open 24 hours.besides, there is a supermarket in the Yakut Recreation Area which is located in the university campus. There are also snack bars, bars, cafes, restaurants at Beach Park which is located by the sea 2 kms far away from the university campus. It is a 10-minute walking distance. There is also the Migros Shopping Centre not far from the campus. In Migros shopping centre there are many shops, supermarket, cinemas and restaurants. 4

PERIOD: 05 AUGUST AUGUST 2013 TO... LANGUAGE COMPONENT - SHORT DESCRIPTION OF LANGUAGE COMPONENT: OBJECTIVES AND TEACHING METHODS The course offered by the Department of Turkish Language Education will follow a mix approach, in other words, it will have some components and dimensions from the communicative approach, task-based communicative approach and situation-based communicative approach. This will enable students to be active practitioners and applicants of the target language. Taking into consideration the personal, public and educational domains of language, skills teaching will play an important role in our teaching environment and process. In other words, communication will be the key word in our language teaching system in the course. The four language skills receptive skills-listening, reading: productive skills writing and speaking will be focused in order to develop their level of language in Turkish. Grammar will not be explicitly taught, but will be implicitly acquired in the natural process. Below are some of the elements that can be observed in this course in-class activities; Communication-oriented speaking such as discussions, task-based discussions, situation-based discussions, individual presentations and other interactive tasks; formal and informal language; informative and persuasive presentations, use of audiovisual aids (OHP, charts, power point, posters, maps) and techniques. Our language teachers Dr.Umit Yildiz, Dr.Yusuf Tepeli, Dr.Tulin Arseven and Dr.Adile Yilmaz are the native speakers of Turkish language. Dr.Umit Yildiz has taught Turkish as a foreign language to European and Russian students, including exchange students, for 10 years without any break in different countries in Europe. During these ten years of experience, he has the experience of teaching Turkish as a foreign language more than 8000 hours (eight thousand hours). He opened Turkish language Teaching Departments in different cities in Europe and wrote 11 course books of Turkish Language as a foreign language which are currently being used as official course books in four different universities in Europe. He also prepared and designed the curricula and syllabi of Turkish as a Foreign Language Departments 3 different European universities which are officially approved and issued by the Ministry of Education and high institutions rectoriats in that country. Dr.Yusuf Tepeli, Dr.Tulin Arseven and Dr. Adile Yilmaz have also a rich range of language teaching experience, and written language books in this field. Dr.Tulin Arseven has a rich range of publications and two published books on language, language teaching and literature. Just like Dr.Tulin Arseven, Dr. Yusuf Tepeli has also six published books and a specialist in the field of grammar and grammar teaching. Our teachers have traveled very often to different countries and familiar with the culture and teaching system of European countries. Dr.Mustafa Kınsız and Ahmet Zeki Güven are also experienced in the field of teaching Turkish as a foreign language. In the frame work of criteria of Council of Europe, students will be given a chance for self-assessment of their process learning period. The exam of the course will cover all receptive and productive skills of Turkish as a language. By the end of the course students who pass the final exam successfully and who successfully present their project work will be awarded with a certificate of success and participation with 6 ECTS credits. Accommodation issue will be dealt with International Office Assistant of the Akdeniz University. Moreover, our students from the department will be always of help for support. The project coordinator and other staff members will give support and consultation in the tutoring process. By the end of the course students will be able to understand and use everyday expressions and basic phrases. The minimum target level is Council of Europe Breakthrough Level\A1. By 5

Students are expected to be able to: introduce themselves and others, ask and answer questions about themselves and other people, to talk about himself\herself, talk about personal and family information, know basic vocabulary on the topics of shopping, local geopraphy and employment. They are expected to be able to start communicate on simple and routine tasks. - SUBJECT-SPECIFIC LANGUAGE ELEMENTS YES NO (e.g. special modules for students in particular disciplines) IF YES, SPECIFY: During the program, in the language component, students will work on a project related to their own particular discipline. In the project selection process students will get help from the course teachers. The aim of this project work is to enable students to focus on the specific and peculiar language areas and communication types related to their particular discipline. During the program, there will be quizzes and a final exam in addition to the students self assessment via a European Language Portfolio as the standard assessment tool,. The quizzes and final exams will cover all four language skills such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. In addition, students will also prepare project presentations in their interest and subject fields. Final test of language skills such as speaking skill will last 15 minutes, listening 30 minutes, reading 45 minutes and writing 30 minutes. The use of Turkish language will be maximized through English, German and Russian. There will not be only lecturing but also whole group discussions and discussions in pairs during these talks. The aim of these talks is to provide students with essential and survival knowledge on specific topics to help them during their stay in Antalya and Turkey. - DURATION TOTAL HOURS OF ACTIVITIES Total number of cultural classes: 10 hours per week and 40 hours in total.
