Guidelines fr Girl Scut Trp & Service Unit Websites Nearly all Girl Scut members surf the web regularly and many Girl Scut Trps and Girl Scut Service Units are designing their wn web pages. Websites and the infrmatin they cntain may be viewed by anyne, anywhere! Ensuring the health and safety f girls is the crnerstne f the Girl Scut Mvement; therefre Girl Scuts f Missuri Heartland prvides the fllwing guidelines and infrmatin. ADULT RESPONSIBILITY Befre yu begin develping a Girl Scut website, yu must first designate ne (1) adult wh will be the primary vlunteer respnsible fr managing the website. This persn will be respnsible fr mnitring the website s that it meets the guidelines belw. IDENTIFYING MEMBERS ONLINE If yu wish t pst Girl Scuts names n the website, use first names nly (n last names). Remember, d nt identify the Girl Scuts pictured in any phts yu pst nline! Never identify the schls, addresses, phne numbers r addresses f Girl Scuts. If yu must include cntact infrmatin, create a generic address (such as GSTrp11223@yah.cm ) t which cmmunicatins may be sent that will effectively hide any individual identity within the Girl Scut Trp r Service Unit. Make sure yu respnd t s in a timely fashin, usually within hurs. Never list the address r lcatin f any Girl Scut meetings r activities. Identify trip r event lcatins nly AFTER they have ccurred, and then use nly nn specific infrmatin, such as city name (i.e., Our Girl Scut Trp went t Jeffersn City, Missuri, last weekend t learn abut state gvernment! ). Never pst phts withut permissin. A signed Girl Scut membership frm includes permissin fr phts t be used fr Girl Scut purpses, but we strngly suggest yu cllect Publicity Release Frms fr each persn pictured n yur website fr yur wn recrds. T dwnlad a Publicity Release Frm fr adults and minrs, g t Fr mre infrmatin n the GSMH Publicity Release Plicy, g t WEBSITE CONTENT Remember that anything yu place n yur website is a reflectin f Girl Scuts f the Missuri Heartland and GSUSA, s be cautius in selecting cntent. Ask yurself, what infrmatin wuld be apprpriate fr a stranger t see n yur site?
2 Make sure that the girls and adults in yur Girl Scut Trp r Service Unit wh may be cntributing cntent t the site realize that this is a Girl Scut website, nt a persnal website, and that everything they cntribute must be scrutinized carefully by the Designated Adult (see Adult Respnsibility) befre it is upladed, bth fr apprpriateness f cntent and fr safety/security f GSMH members. References t race, clr, religin, age (except when referring t girl prgram grade levels), sex, natinal rigin, sexual rientatin, marital status, learning disability, physical r mental disability, ancestry, genetic infrmatin, and any ther prtected class status, as well as plitical and persnal pinins, have n place n a Girl Scut web page. GIRL USE Speak with the girls in yur Girl Scut Trp r Service Unit and make sure that they understand the imprtance f preserving the Girl Scut image nline. Dn t allw them t pst cntent n any page, frum, blg r chat rm n behalf f the Girl Scut Trp r Service Unit withut examining the cntent first, and encurage them t use gd judgment and discretin in chsing what they pst n their wn websites. Have Girl Scuts fill ut the Internet Safety Pledge, g t and discuss nline safety with them. Make sure the Girl Scuts understand the ptential dangers f using the Internet, and educate them abut nt sharing persnal infrmatin, phts, cntact infrmatin, etc. with strangers nline. COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS/GUARDIANS Invite parents/guardians t cntact yu if they have any cncerns regarding the cntent f yur website, and be understanding and flexible in dealing with any cntent that raises cncerns.
