5 Issue, May The DDP- interface provides a flexible alternative to hard wiring directly to the DCS backplane and allows insertion of optional circuit access cards when required for testing and patching circuits. The DCS units are fully cabled to the DDP during initial installation. additions and removals are then cabled to the DDP, keeping these ongoing activities away from the DCS backplane. At the DDP, the DCS and are connected together through a makebefore-break Rear Interface Unit (RIU) in the DDP- chassis. The RIU accepts an optional plugin circuit access card, which is inserted without disrupting service. The circuit access card has jacks for circuit testing, monitoring and patching..04 The DDP- consists of the following components: circuit chassis (may be ordered with or without RIUs) Circuit access cards (not included with chassis) Note: Component number and appearance may vary based on customer requirements. But basic component engineering information is defined in this guide. B. DDP- Chassis.0 The DDP- chassis (Figure ) is a -inch (8.4 CM) wide, 8-inch (0. CM) high, double shelf that connects each direction of a bi-directional DS- (coaxial cable based) circuit on separate card slots of the chassis. The chassis interfaces circuits and has 64 card slots. Each card slot interfaces one direction of a circuit. The DCS to IN direction of a circuit is connected through the top card slot. The to DCS IN direction of a circuit is connected through the bottom card slot..06 Each DS- circuit interfaced to the DDP- chassis is a full duplex (bi-directional) circuit, consisting of a coaxial connection for each of the following: DCS port (transmit) DCS port IN (receive) (transmit) IN (receive).07 The DDP- chassis includes protective front covers that slide into the chassis when circuit access is required. Hinged designation labels on the chassis mounting brackets provide circuit identification for the DCS unit and associated. A set of rear cable bar assemblies support cable management for cables entering the chassis. For each full duplex circuit, four coaxial cables are interfaced to the DDP- chassis. Power is not required for the DDP- chassis since it is a passive device. Page 998, ADC Telecommunications, Inc.

7 Issue, May 998 C. Rear Interface Units (RIUs).08 The Rear Interface Unit (RIU) provides the interface for coaxial cables at the rear of the chassis and it accepts a circuit access card which is plugged in the front of the chassis. The RIU is illustrated in Figure 4. Each RIU has two mini coaxial interfaces at the rear for the coaxial cables (one for the DCS and one for the ). A bi-directional circuit requires two RIUs. The two RIUs associated with a circuit are located one above the other within a chassis. The top card slot connects the DCS to IN direction and the bottom card slot connects the to DCS IN direction. The RIU features make-before-break connections which allows insertion of a circuit access card without interrupting service. Without a circuit access card plugged into the RIU, the two coaxial cables are looped through the RIU. Inserting a circuit access card transfers the loop through connection to the circuit access card without disrupting service..09 A DDP- chassis may be ordered fully or partially loaded with RIUs depending on requirements. Non-functional RIUs are installed at the factory between functional RIU slots. The non-functional RIU provides a means of terminating coaxial cables to the DDP- for DCS ports that are not expected to be activated in the near future. As functional RIUs are added, the cables are removed from the adjacent non-functional RIU and connected to the newly installed functional RIU. Non-functional RIUs remain in the chassis to prevent installation of a circuit access card in an unused location. /X DCS XMT PORT RCV IN XMT RCV IN 60-B Figure 4. 8 Issue, May 998 D. Circuit Access Card.0 When a circuit access card is plugged into the RIU as shown in Figure, the loop through connection is transferred to the access card without interrupting service. The user now has access to the circuit through mini coax jacks at the front of the chassis. Three jacks at the front of each circuit access card provide the following functions: MONITOR IN. Inserting a plug into the or IN jack opens the loop through connection and interrupts the circuit momentarily before it is transferred to the plug. When a circuit is accessed through the jack, the IN jack is automatically terminated through 7 Ohms to ground. Similarly, when a circuit is accessed through the IN jack, the jack is automatically terminated to a 7 Ohm ground. The MONITOR (MON) jack, which is bridged to the jack, provides a low level monitor access to the circuit. Accessing the MON jack does not disrupt the circuit.. Plugging a circuit access card into the DDP- top card slot allows access to the DCS and IN directions. Plugging a circuit access card into the DDP- bottom card slot allows access to the and DCS IN directions. /X DCS XMT MON PORT RCV IN IN XMT MON RCV IN IN 64-B Figure. 9 Issue, May 998 E. Overview of the DCS. DCSs are being introduced to central offices to establish electronic cross-connects, multiplexing and circuit grooming between s. s are wired to DCS ports and logically cross-connected internally by the DCS. The cross-connects can be readily changed by entering software commands at the DCS..4 The same DCS may terminate DS- (twisted pair) and/or DS- (coaxial cable) circuits. A DCS for example, may be designated DCS / terminating both DS- and DS- circuits. The DDP- is designed to support the digital signal rates listed in paragraph.0 by means of coaxial cable.. A DCS is comprised of units. The size of the DCS is increased by adding units to the particular system. The DCS units contain DS- interfaces and are expanded incrementally by groups of. DCS machines vary by type and manufacturer in the quantity of units per rack..6 A DDP- rack is typically configured to interface a multiple of DCS racks. For example, a DDP- rack may interface one 6 circuit DCS rack, two 8 circuit DCS racks, etc. This incremental count eases the identification of DCS circuits during maintenance activities.. PLACING THE DDP- IN THE CENTRAL OFFICE.0 The following considerations should be addressed when planning the placement of DDP- racks in the central office. Placing the DDP- in a centralized location rather than randomly throughout the office facilitates testing, monitoring, and patching of circuits. If DDP-s are placed randomly throughout the office, technicians must first locate the DDP- chassis assigned to the DCS or needing test or repair. Randomly placed DDP-s may limit the patching feature since the distances involved could exceed the allowable patch length. An equal level reference point is required for testing circuits. Line build-outs in the DCS and compensate for different cable lengths interfacing the two equipments. Maximum cabling distances are specified in Section 4 and should be considered when placing the DDP- in the central office. Dedicating floor space for current needs as well as future expansion must be considered to eliminate multiple DDP- locations that could limit the patching features of the DDP-. Page 9 998, ADC Telecommunications, Inc.

10 Issue, May 998 A. DDP- Racks and Hardware.0 It is recommended that the DDP- be installed in a 7-foot environment to allow technicians to access circuits without the need for ladders. When a DDP- is installed in environments over 7 feet, they should only be placed up to the 7-foot level..0 Unequal flange network racks (Figure 6) provide efficient management of cables routed into the rack. When two racks are placed next to each other, the wide front flanges form a duct area between the racks. This duct area provides a cable management route for running cables vertically within the rack. Adding a filler panel between the racks increases the cable duct area. When configuring a full rack of DDP-s, a 0-inch filler panel is required between racks and a -inch filler panel is required at the ends of rack line-ups. This spacing provides sufficient room to add and remove cables as the and DCS change over time..04 Guard boxes, included as part of a network rack, provide a bumper at the base of the rack to prevent mobile equipment from hitting the equipment chassis installed in the rack. Racks equipped with -inch rear and -inch front guard boxes are required for DDP-. The DDP- chassis fits within a -inch rack footprint. For convenience, AC outlets may be placed on the guard boxes and are typically located on each third rack in a line-up..0 End guards placed at the end of a rack line-up protect cables routed in the duct area. They also provide a location for bay alarm indicators and AC light switches..06 A rack installation kit provides hardware to anchor the rack to the floor and support the top to superstructure above. Also included in this kit are cable tie brackets (for DCS cables) that attach to the sides of the rack in the duct area..07 Twelve cable tie brackets are required for a 7-foot rack. These brackets attach to the rear of the wide flange at the front of the rack and they secure cables within the duct area, yet segregated from the DCS cables. This segregation between DCS and cables allows efficient cable management as cables are added and removed on an ongoing basis..08 Each DDP- chassis includes two rear cable bar assemblies for management of cables at the rear of the chassis. One assembly is for the cables interfacing the top card slots and the other is for cables interfacing the bottom card slots. The cable bar assemblies mount to the rear flange of the rack..09 Figure 7 illustrates a three bay line-up with filler panels and end guards. Page 0 998, ADC Telecommunications, Inc.

13 Issue, May 998. DDP- RACK CONFIGURATION.0 The DDP- chassis is 8 inches (0. cm) high, inches (8.4 cm) wide, and occupies four WECO (-inch) rack mounting spaces. The chassis can be installed so the front is either flush with the front of the rack or extended two inches from the front of the rack. The flush mounting option is recommended for unequal flange, network rack applications..0 The recommended maximum of eight, -circuit DDP- chassis in a 7-foot (. meter) rack provides 6 interfaces as shown in Figure 8. A DDP- rack is typically configured to interface a multiple of DCS racks. For example, a DDP- rack equipped for 6 circuits may interface one 6 circuit DCS rack or two 8 circuit DCS racks. DCS machines vary by type and manufacturer in the quantity of ports per rack..0 The 6-inch (. cm) space at the middle of the rack is reserved for customer provided maintenance equipment such as a communication panel or test equipment. The 8-inch (0. cm) space at the top of the rack is reserved for a fuse panel and bridging office repeaters if required. A fuse panel is not required for the DDP-, but may be required for optional maintenance equipment. The 8-inch (0. cm) space at the top may also be reserved for one additional DDP- chassis for circuit roll-over when converting to a new DCS..88 IN. (6.7 CM) BLANK PAL BLANK PAL DDP- CHASSIS FT (. 14 Issue, May CABLING FOR THE DDP- A. Cable Length Considerations 4.0 The DDP- is designed for use with 7A mini coaxial cable between the DDP- and DCS and also between the DDP- and. DS- cabling distances are shown in Figure 9 which shows that the distance between the DDP- and DCS is a maximum of feet. (68.6 meters) The distance between the DDP- and is also limited to a maximum of feet (68.6 meters). Floor space planning is essential when dedicating space for the DDP-, DCS, and. Where it is not possible to remain within these cable length limitations, 74A type cable may be used between the DDP- and with a maximum distance of 40 feet (7. meters). 74A cabling should be kept to a minimum to avoid cable congestion in the DDP- racks as well as overhead cable racking. Note: It is not physically possible to interface two 74A cables on the same RIU, so the DCS cabling must be 7A type mini coaxial cable. 4.0 The maximum patching length between two DDP- positions is 0 feet (6. meters) using 7A patch cords. Patching beyond this limit may require regeneration of the DS- signal. DDP- Coaxial Cable Distance Limitations B. Cable Routing 4.0 DCS cables are routed to the DDP- first. All DCS ports, whether initially used or not, should be cabled to the DDP- chassis to eliminate subsequent cabling activities on the DCS backplane. The DCS cables are secured to the DCS cable tie brackets in the duct of the rack. After the DCS cables have been routed and terminated to the DDP- chassis, the cables are routed, secured to cable tie brackets, and terminated at the DDP-. Figure 0 illustrates the vertical cable routing within the rack cable ducts. Page 4 998, ADC Telecommunications, Inc.
