1 Rack Installation Instructions Guidelines This publication provides information about how to install your server into a standard rack cabinet using the rail kit shipped with your server. If you no longer have a copy of this publication, you can obtain a Portable Document Format (PDF) version from the Lenovo Support Web site at: CAUTION: Be sure to read and understand the documentation that comes with the rack cabinet for safety and cabling information. Also make sure that you read and understand all the related safety information for the server and review the guidelines in this publication before you install the server into a rack cabinet. Reading and understanding the information reduces the risk of personal injury and or damage to your product. The rack cabinet must meet one of the following requirements: Standard 4-post (square-hole), 19-inch rack configuration compliant with EIA-310-E as defined by the Electronic Industries Alliance Standard 4-post (unthreaded round-hole), 19-inch rack configuration compliant with EIA-310-E as defined by the Electronic Industries Alliance 1

2 The dimensions of the rack cabinet must meet the following requirements: Figure 1. The dimension requirements of the rack cabinet 1 Rear mounting flange 2 Front mounting flange 3 Front door of the rack cabinet The following table explains the dimension requirements of the rack cabinet. Table 1. The dimension requirements of the rack cabinet Item Dimensions Description A 750 mm 900 mm ( inches) Item A refers to the distance between the front mounting flange 2 and the rear mounting flange 1. The distance should be 750 mm (29.53 inches) in minimum and 900 mm ( inches) in maximum. B > 474 mm (18.66 inches) Item B refers to the width of the server including the rail kit when the server is installed into the rack cabinet. The width should exceed 474 mm (18.66 inches). D > 60 mm (2.36 inches) Item D refers to the distance between the front mounting flange 2 and the inside of the front door of the rack cabinet 3. The distance should exceed 60 mm (2.36 inches). This clearance is required for the chassis pull handles on the front of the server as well as air circulation through the cabinet. L > 950 mm (37.4 inches) Item L refers to the distance between the front mounting flange 2 and the rear of the server. The distance should exceed 950 mm (37.4 inches). This clearance is used to save adequate space for the cable management arm. Before you install the server into a rack cabinet, review the following guidelines to help you in your installation and avoid the risk of personal injury and or damage to your product: Two or more people are required to lift a server, move a server, or install a server into a rack cabinet if the server meets one of the following criteria: 2

3 The server is 2U or larger. ( U is the unit of measurement for defining the vertical space used by your server and 1U is equivalent to cm or 1.75 inches.) The weight of the server is rated above 18 kg (39.7 lbs). Refer to the following statement for safe practices when lifting. 18 kg (39.7 lb) 32 kg (70.5 lb) 55 kg (121.2 lb) < 32 kg (70.5 lb) < 55 kg (121.2 lb) < 100 kg (220.5 lb) CAUTION: Use safe practices when lifting. Before installing a server into a rack cabinet, remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the server. Then, disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the server. Make sure that the room air temperature is below 35 C (95 F). Do not block any air vents; usually 15 cm (6 inches) of space provides proper airflow. Do not leave open spaces above or below an installed server in your rack cabinet. To help prevent damage to server components, always install a blank filler panel to cover the open space and to help ensure proper air circulation. Install the server only in a rack cabinet with perforated door(s) for both security and proper airflow. Start from the bottom of the rack cabinet for the server or device installation. Install the heaviest server or device in the bottom of the rack cabinet. Do not extend more than one server or device out of the rack cabinet at the same time. If possible, remove the doors and side panels of the rack cabinet to provide easier access during installation. Do not overload the electrical outlet when you install multiple devices in the rack cabinet. Connect all power cords to proper electrical outlets and refer to the documentation that comes with the rack cabinet for cabling information to help you properly manage all the cables in the rack cabinet. Observe the following guideline: CAUTION: Do not place any object on top of rack-mounted devices. 3

4 Rail kit package Before you begin the rack installation, remove all the parts from the rail kit package shipped with your server and lay all the parts on a working surface. Notes: An optional cable management arm can help you to manage your cables. Contact your local Service Provider to purchase the cable management arm and refer to the later part of this section for more information about the cable management arm. All the parts related to the cable management arm in the following figures are made in grey. This indicates that they are optional. The rail kit package contains the following parts. Contact your place of purchase if any part is missing or damaged. Figure 2. 5 The left slide rail and the right slide rail are almost the same. The illustration below shows the components of the left slide rail. Figure 3. The inner side of the right slide rail is marked with R. The letter R stands for right. The illustration below shows the components of the cable management arm. Figure 4. 6 Installing your server into a rack cabinet using the rail kit Before you begin, remove all the parts from the rail kit package and lay all the parts on a working surface. See Rail kit package on page 4. The length of each slide rail ranges from 65 cm (25.6 inches) when collapsed to 90 cm (35.4 inches) when fully extended. Measure the rack before the installation to ensure that the rack can accommodate the slide rail. Attention: Do not open your server or attempt any repair before reading and understanding the Guidelines on page 1. To install the server into a rack cabinet using the rail kit, do the following: 1. Install the rail kit by doing the following: a. On a rear mounting flange of the right side of the rack cabinet, select a proper rack mounting area for the right slide rail. Position the rear end of the right slide rail to the mounting area so that the tabs on the rear end of the right slide rail are aligned with the corresponding holes in the mounting area. Push the right slide rail in the direction as shown in the figure until the rear end of the right slide rail is firmly secured to the mounting flange. Note: The holes in a mounting flange are separated into groups by measuring marks. The three holes between two adjacent measuring marks form a group, which indicates 1U space. Note the measuring marks on a mounting flange to help you correctly select a rack mounting area for the server. For more information about the placement of the holes in a mounting flange, refer to the documentation that comes with the rack cabinet. Figure 5. 7 b. Pull up the release latch 1 on the front end of the right slide rail. Keep the release latch in the raised position and pull out the slide rail lock 2. Figure 6. Unlocking the slide rail lock c. Position the front part of the right slide rail to the mounting flange. Make sure that the front end and rear end of the right slide rail are at the same horizontal level. Push the right slide rail 1 until the front end of the right slide rail is firmly secured to the mounting flange. Push the slide rail lock 2 back horizontally until it is locked into place. Figure 7. 8 d. Repeat steps 1 through 3 to install the left slide rail to the opposite side of the rack cabinet. 2. Install the cable management arm by doing the following: a. Turn to the rear of the rack cabinet. b. Align the bump on the crossbar with the dent on the bar-rail joint 1. Turn the crossbar counter clockwise until it is secured 2. Figure 8. Connecting the crossbar and the bar-rail joint c. Align the bump on the other end of the crossbar with the dent on the slide rail 1. Turn the crossbar counter clockwise 2 until it is secured. Pull out the eject button 3 and insert the bar-rail joint into the slide rail 4. Figure 9. Connecting the crossbar and the slide rails 8

9 d. Connect the arm marked with A and the arm-rail joint by pulling out the eject button 1 and inserting the arm into the arm-rail joint 2. Figure 10. Connecting the cable management arm and the arm-rail joint e. Connect the arm marked with B and the slide rail by pulling out the eject button 1 and inserting the arm into the arm-rail joint 2. Then connect the arm marked with A and the slide rail by pulling out the eject button 3 and inserting the arm into the arm-rail joint 4. Figure 11. 10 3. Install the server by doing the following: a. Fully extend the inner rails on both sides until the inner rails cannot be pulled out further. Figure 12. Fully extending the inner rails 10

11 b. Position the server as shown in the following illustration. Mount and secure the pair of rail mount points at the rear 1 first. Then mount and secure the pair of rail mount points 2. Finally, hold and press the slide rails towards the server until the rail mount points 3 are locked into place. Figure 13. Securing the server 11

13 4. Lift the latch 1 on both sides to release the inner rails. Gently slide the inner rails with the server into the rack cabinet 2. CAUTION: To avoid injury to fingers, keep hands free from the latch area when the latch approaches the outer rail. Figure 15. Sliding the inner rails with the server into the rack cabinet 13

14 5. Secure the server to the rack cabinet with an M6 x 16 screw on both sides of the front of the server. Figure 16.
